All Blacks return to World number one following Springboks defeat to the Wallabies
New Zealand moved to the top of the World Rugby rankings after earning a 41-24 victory over Argentina Sevu Reece and Samisoni Taukei'aho both crossed over twice as the All Blacks clinched a six-try win in Cordoba. The victory sends New Zealand to the summit of the World Rugby rankings for the first time in four years and knocked South Africa off the top spot, following their defeat to Australia on Saturday Cortez Ratima and Ardie Saves also scored tries for New Zealand while Rodrigo Isgro, Tomas Albornoz and Joaquin Oviedo went over for the home team. "We talked about starting well and I think we did that. We finished the second half quite strong - it was a bit of a statement there," said All Blacks captain Scott Barrett. "In the second half we were a little bit slow and probably a little bit of indiscipline fed their game, which was disappointing and allowed the crowd to get in behind them. "They threw a lot of punches at us and I'm pleased the guys who finished the game were able to win some arm wrestles, get some territory and most importantly come away with a good win." The defeat extends Argentina's winless record on home soil against New Zealand to 15 matches with the All Blacks' superiority evident throughout, although they had to see off a second-half surge from Argentina who were 31-10 down at the break but fought back to trail 31-24 before New Zealand closed out the match. Argentina quickly countered with a try of their own as a long pass out to right winger Isgro reduced the lead to three points. New Zealand powered ahead with three tries before the break as Jordan sliced through from the halfway line to set up Ratima, followed by another try for Ardie Savea who powered over from a lineout drive. There was still time for another New Zealand try before the break as their forwards hammered away at the try line before Ratima swung the ball out to Reece and he went over in the corner. Argentina reduced the deficit 11 minutes into the second half as Albornoz attacked the line at pace and dived over as the All Black defence was caught napping. When Billy Proctor was sent to the sin bin, there was renewed hope for the home side and they took advantage of their numerical superiority as Oviedo went over in the 64th minute to make the score 31-24. New Zealand ended Argentine hopes of a recovery, however, as a lineout maul put Taukei'aho over and he added another try to seal the win. The sides meet in Buenos Aires again next Saturday. Meanwhile, Rassie Erasmus pulled no punches as he laid into his South Africa side following their second half capitulation in the stunning 38-22 loss to Australia in their Rugby Championship opener at Ellis Park. The Springboks were cruising as they led 22-0 inside the first quarter, but while Australia grew into the game and began to win the individual contests, the home side wilted in the second half as the visitors scored 38 unanswered points. "I can try to butter it up and bottle it up to sound cool and respectful. The effort was maybe there but the accuracy or precision wasn't," Erasmus said. "It was a bad loss in a bad way. Not against a bad team, we just didn't have fight right until the end, and that's not what we want to give South Africa. "There was a stage where I felt our heads were dropping and shoulders were slumping, and that was part of the disappointment." Australia dominated at the breakdown, an area that has troubled the Springboks this season as they try to move to a more expansive, running style of play, which makes for a looser contest on the floor. "We didn't scrum them and they beat us in the lineouts," Erasmus said. "In the first 25 minutes, I thought we were really good in the breakdown. After that, when Siya (Kolisi) got injured and Marco (van Staden) went for a (head-injury assessment), it slipped away. "They beat us in most departments. We as coaches got it terribly wrong and we must look firstly at ourselves." The two teams meet again in Cape Town on Saturday and Erasmus, who has already announced his side for the match to the players, says there may be a rethink. "We know from now until next Saturday we are going to take a lot of flak. We take the credit when we do well, now we must take the flak when we do badly. "We already picked next week's that will probably change. "We'll have to rethink it. They tactically outsmarted us and physically dominated us." Reuters

Reece, Taukei'aho doubles see the All Blacks win 41-24 over Argentina in the Rugby Championship
CORDOBA, Argentina (AP) — Winger Sevu Reece scored two first half tries and hooker Samisoni Taukei'aho added two in the second to propel New Zealand to a 41-24 win over Argentina Saturday in its opening match in the Rugby Championship. Reece's tries in the ninth and 43rd minutes book-ended a first half in which the All Blacks scored four tries to lead 31-10 by halftime. Scrumhalf Cortez Ratima scored off a break by fullback Will Jordan and backrower Ardie Savea touched down for his 30th test try, adding to his record for an All Blacks forward. Argentina came back into the match strongly in the second half with a superb solo try from a scrum by flyhalf Tomas Albornoz, who scored 14 points and another to backrower Joaquin Oviedo when the All Blacks were down to 14 men. Oviedo is a native of Cordoba where the Pumas were playing for the first time in 11 years. The All Blacks have tended to fade out of matches in the second spell but managed to halt Argentina's momentum and rebuild their lead with a quick double to to replacement hooker Samisoni Taukeiaho. Argentina was mostly starved of possession in the first spell, though it managed a try to winger Rodrigo Isgro. With a more direct approach in the second half, Argentina pressured the All Blacks and forced them into errors which conceded penalties. The All Blacks backline lacked timing a cohesion for most of the match. Beauden Barrett opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a penalty from 40 meters after he was the victim of a late tackle by Santiago Chocobares. Albornoz had a chance to reply from similar distance for Argentina but his penalty kick hit the upright and bounced back into play. Reece's opening try came in the ninth minute when the All Blacks took a lineout from a penalty. Hooker Codie Taylor peeled from the maul and Fletcher Newell and Savea went close before a long pass found Reece unmarked on the right wing. Argentina replied with a try to Isgro in similar circumstances. Chocobares retrieved Gonzalo Garcia's chip kick and the Pumas forwards went to work, setting up the platform from which Isgro scored. Argentina short-handed Prop Mayco Vivas was shown a yellow card in the 18th minute for cynical offending when he reached over a ruck and knocked the ball out of Ratima's hands. Argentina chose to bring on a prop and send winger Bautista Delguy to the sideline for 10 minutes. The All Blacks were slow to exploit their one man advantage but in the 24th minute, Will Jordan stepped out of a tackle and into the backfield where Argentina was short-handed, linking with Ratima who scored. Albornoz kicked a penalty in the 29th minute, keeping Argentina in the match at 17-10. But the All Blacks finished the half strongly with tries to Savea from a lineout and to Reece who scored in first half stoppage time. Albornoz made a clean break from a scrum to start the second half with a try, then Oviedo scored after the All Blacks had conceded several penalties close to their line. Center Billy Proctor was sent to the sin-bin. Taukei'aho dived over for the decisive try after a lineout from penalty gave the All Blacks a critical set piece close to the Pumas goalline. He scored again soon afterwards to expand the margin All Blacks who finished with center Anton Lienert-Brown in the sin-bin. Lions suffer first ever defeat by Argentina in setback before Australia tour
Trailing 21-10 at the interval, Andy Farrell's men went on to produce their most effective rugby but they could not break stubborn opponents ranked fifth in the world in front of a sold-out Aviva Stadium. A penalty try and Tadhg Beirne touchdown created a path to victory but Argentina's ruthless counter-attacking swept Santiago Cordero in for the match-winning in the 59th minute. The Lions showed a willingness to attack in a promising sign ahead of their arrival Down Under, but their accuracy failed to match their ambition and they were often guilty of overplaying. Fin Smith was among their standout players in a performance that suggests Finn Russell has serious competition for the fly-half duties against the Wallabies, while wing Tommy Freeman shone early on. The Lions' greatest weapon was their scrum with props Ellis Genge and Finlay Bealham submitting Argentina's front row, but their line-out needs urgent attention ahead of their clash with Western Force next Saturday. Any gripes that the Dublin sendoff was little more than a money spinner were quickly forgotten amid a exhilarating start that saw both lines come under pressure – and the tension never eased until the final whistle. Luke Cowan-Dickie appeared to have finished a rolling maul but the try was disallowed for a knock on by the England hooker and it was the Pumas who were first to strike. Duhan van der Merwe had made some storming early runs but he was among those at fault for an opening in the Lions' defence, enabling the dangerous Iganacio Mendy to dart over. Sione Tuipulotu was the next to be denied a try by a knock on, but there was no stopping a surging Bundee Aki in the 19th minute as Argentina became swamped by waves of red shirts running at the line. A Tomas Albornoz penalty propelled the Pumas back in front but the Lions were threatening to cut loose through their endeavour in attack. Marcus Smith was alert to a threatening Argentina grubber and there was more pressure to come with pick and goes testing their resolve before another three points from Albornoz extended the lead to 14-10. And there was worse to come for Farrell's men on the stroke of half-time when they failed to protect the ball at the back of a ruck and the Pumas pounced through Juan Martin Gonzalez with Albornoz completing a surgical finish. The Lions started the second-half with their tails up as Fin Smith continued to impress, but it was the pack who made their presence felt by mauling their way to a penalty try with Mayco Vivas also being sent to the sin bin. Tuipulotu helped set up the field position with a barnstorming run while Smith was beginning to find space. Genge stormed upfield as the Lions continued their transformation and now they had found the killer instinct with Beirne charging through a gap. But Farrell's team could not pull clear and when Van der Merwe's defensive shortcomings were exposed again, this time by a dropped high ball, Argentina pulled the trigger with Cordero rounding off a sublime counter attacking try. The Lions dominated the closing stages but could not find a way through.
