AI regulations key to safe usage amid possible disruption: Tech experts
Artificial intelligence is ushering in a new era of productivity as well as risks that enterprises and the government need to be prepared for, industry leaders said on Thursday. While AI will be a catalyst for India's economic growth, guardrails and governance will be key to adopt the technology safely and to build resilience amid possible disruption, they said.
'If we truly want to move towards Viksit Bharat in 2047, that will be rooted in technological empowerment, inclusive economic growth, and digital sovereignty, and AI truly can be an accelerator,' said Sandip Patel, MD, IBM India & South Asia.
AI adoption in India is higher than in other countries, as per a global survey carried out by IBM, Patel said. However, this is more experimentation while adoption at scale still lags.Gaps in trust and confidence in the technology are a key reason for this, he said, adding that credible cases with the right ROI are also needed. IBM itself is adopting the technology, with 95% of its HR processes now being done using AI agents, said Patel.Alok B Lall, COO, Microsoft India & South Asia, said businesses should look at how to reshape their processes.
'As the world gets more agentic AI, we're hearing of terms like human-in-the-loop, human-on-the-loop and human-out-of-the-loop, as agents get to be more autonomous and they do most of the work by talking to other agents,' he said.
At the same time, enterprises need to empower their employees with AI, he added. 'It's not just about giving them a tool that helps them to use AI, it's fundamentally changing the way organisations are looking at talent – do you need somebody with 20 years of experience or you could get somebody with lesser experience with a powerful AI assistant?'AI is bringing a moment of irreversible acceleration where intelligence is not confined to machines but also gets embedded into life itself, said Debjani Ghosh, distinguished fellow, NITI Aayog and chief architect, NITI Frontier Tech Hub.'India will have a very key role to play in shaping this future,' said Ghosh. 'Our tradition of human centric thinking, inclusivity, respect for collective good - this must become our competitive advantage in a world that needs to get anchored in trust for its survival.'There will be bad actors who master the technology much faster, however, and countries need to build resilience to recover quickly when things go wrong, she added. Shiv Siddhant Kaul, co-chair, CII National AI Forum & MD, NICCO Engineering Services, said that CII's AI taskforce has been focusing on outreach and workshops to familiarise businesses with AI, especially MSMEs which may not be engaging much with the technology.There is also a generation gap in awareness and use of AI, he said, with the 48–55 year age group lagging.'For most companies, it's going to be existential because newer companies that are empowering younger people are going to figure out how to use AI, and our challenge will be making sure that the companies that are left behind don't leave a big-sized hole in our society in terms of employment,' Kaul said.Taranjeet Singh Bhamra, founder & CEO, AgNext Technologies, said that startups are embracing AI and tend to do this with precise use cases rather than broad experimentation given their relatively limited resources compared to large enterprises.When it comes to agriculture, AI can play a role in optimising inputs and measuring output quantity and quality, which would be needed to build algorithms that can help us increase food production, he said.

Naidu unveils vision to make AP $2.4-tn economy by 2047
New Delhi: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday unveiled a bold development agenda to transform Andhra Pradesh into a $2.4-trillion economy by 2047. Addressing the Special Plenary Session of industry body CII's Annual Business Summit 2025 here, he invited industry leaders to participate in the Swarna Andhra Vision 2047 and called for deeper collaboration in innovation, infrastructure, and inclusive growth. As part of the vision, the government aims to sustain over 15 per cent annual GDP growth and achieve a per capita income of $42,000-positioning Andhra Pradesh as one of the most prosperous and inclusive states in India. Naidu said entrepreneurs generate wealth, and with it, we can implement impactful welfare programmes. During the years when the CII Partnership Summit was held in Hyderabad, it brought immense visibility and investment, he added. 'Now, I seek your support to bring investment to Andhra Pradesh so we can continue creating wealth. We are at a truly inspiring moment in time', the Chief Minister said. Reflecting on his decades-long association with CII, Naidu noted, 'For over three decades, you've understood and engaged with my vision. In the mid-1990s, when CII was still finding its footing, I was warned that associating with industrialists or international forums like Davos might harm my political prospects. Yet, I persisted- attending Davos regularly since 1995 - because I believed in economic development through collaboration'. The Chief Minister said his government would set up a global leadership centre in Amaravati to prepare leaders for tomorrow, on the lines of Davos in Switzerland. "We want to set up a global leadership centre in Amaravati to prepare global leaders for tomorrow. We are all going to Davos to learn, network, meet people, exchange ideas. Now, this is the place I want to make it," he said. Naidu said companies like TCS, IBM and L&T would be setting up quantum computing centres in Amaravati, the new Greenfield capital. He said Andhra Pradesh is well-positioned for industries producing green energy. Naidu said his state has good solar and wind energy potential, along with pumped storage, green ammonia and nitrogen. It also has ports. "Some states have solar, some have wind, but all put together, Andhra Pradesh is the number one state for green energy and downstream industries," he said. Inviting industries to set up facilities in the state, Naidu said, "I will give you all the facilities. I am planning big." He said out of India's target to achieve 500 gigawatts of installed electricity capacity for non-fossil-based energy sources, 160 GW will come from Andhra Pradesh. Naidu highlighted India's evolution since the economic liberalization era under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, noting that nearly 30 per cent of top global Indian achievers are of Telugu origin. He underlined the importance of technological advancements - ranging from AI to quantum computing—and stressed the potential of real-time data and innovation to position India as a global leader. 'We are fortunate to have Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the helm during this critical phase. Today, we are the fourth-largest economy. As India ascends to become the world's third-largest economy, the real competition begins - with the USA and China. The Indian industry must prepare for this next phase,' he urged.

74 conferred degrees at EDII's 24th convocation
Ahmedabad: Vijay Kumar Saraswat, member of NITI Aayog and former secretary of the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), on Friday said that the vision of Viksit Bharat, a developed India by 2047, is not merely a govt policy but a collective aspiration. It requires entrepreneurs to be its primary architects. Dr Saraswat was speaking at the 24th convocation of the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) at Bhat near Gandhinagar, where he was the chief guest. He also said that research is no longer an issue with India – we produce great research and researchers. However, the issue lies in producing translational research where the gap between research and implementation must be filled, he added. The event saw 74 students of courses including PGDM-E, PGDM-IEV, and the fellow programme receiving their degrees. Those present at the convocation included Rakesh Sharma, EDII president and CEO of IDBI Bank, and members of the EDII governing board.
