India fastest growing economy: PM
Bengaluru: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said India is moving fast towards becoming the third major economy in the world and this momentum was achieved through the spirit of 'reform, perform and transform'. The Prime Minister's comments come days after US President Donald Trump's 'India a dead economy,' jibe. Modi said that during the past 11 years, India's economy has grown from the 10th position to the top 5 globally and is rapidly progressing towards becoming one of the top three economies. Laying the foundation stone for Bangalore Metro Phase-3 project here and after flagging off 3 Vande Bharat Express trains and inaugurating the Metro Rail Yellow line, the Prime Minister in his address outlined growth across sectors and said such achievements strengthened the resolve of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. 'We are moving fast to become one of the top three economies of the world. How we got this speed? We got it through the spirit of reform, perform and transform,' he said adding the speed was achieved through clear intention and honest efforts. On infrastructure growth, the Prime Minister said in 2014, Metro Rail services were confined to just five cities. Today, Metro Rail networks span over 1,000 km across 24 cities, making India the third-largest metro network globally. Since independence, till 2014, only 20,000 km rail network had been electrified. During 11 years alone, from 2014 to 2025, it has increased to 40,000 km. Similarly, from 74 airports in 2014, the nation today has more than 160 and likewise, the national waterways has gone up to 30 from only 3. Batting for focused efforts to lead in emerging fields, Modi stressed the need to strengthen Bengaluru and Karnataka's presence in 'Make in India' and the manufacturing sector. He urged that India's products must adhere to the 'Zero Defect, Zero Effect' standard, meaning they should be flawless in quality and have no negative impact on the environment. He expressed confidence that Karnataka's talent will lead the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The journey towards 'Viksit Bharat' would move ahead alongside Digital India. By way of initiatives like the India AI Mission, India is advancing towards global AI leadership. 'India is moving to assume the role of global leadership in the domain of Artificial Intelligence. Semiconductor mission is also gaining pace. India will soon get Made in India chip,' he said. As regards space missions, he said India has become an example of 'low-cost hi-tech space missions', which means that India is moving ahead in areas of futuristic technologies. The specialty of such advancement is empowerment of poor and digitisation has reached every village. Through UPI, India accounts for over 50 per cent of the world's real-time transactions, he underlined. Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Union Ministers Manohar Lal, H D Kumaraswamy, Ashwini Vaishnaw, V Somanna, Shobha Karandlaje were present.

Champion PM's Mission LiFE: Ex-CS IYR
Visakhapatnam: Former Andhra Pradesh chief secretary IYR. Krishna Rao has called upon the student community and youth to take the lead in advancing Mission LiFE (lifestyle for environment). Krishna Rao was speaking at a programme to scale up environmental protection and energy efficiency activities in southern states, an event supported by BEE's media adviser wing for southern states and union territories. Launched by prime minister Narendra Modi at COP26 in Nov 2021, Mission LiFE promotes mindful consumption and a circular economy, encouraging citizens to move away from the "use-and-throw" model. It seeks to mobilise one billion people worldwide and make 80% of India's villages and urban areas environmentally friendly by 2028. Krishna Rao commended BEE's sustained leadership in rolling out innovative energy efficiency schemes across the nation, the initiatives that contribute over 40% of India's climate change mitigation efforts. Since inception, these programmes have resulted in energy savings of more than 50.98 million tonnes of oil equivalent (MTOE), thermal energy savings of 25.68 MTOE, electricity savings exceeding 306.55 billion units annually, and a reduction in CO₂ emissions by approximately 306.40 million tonnes per year. "These achievements not only deliver significant monetary savings but also position India as a global leader in sustainable development," Krishna Rao said, adding that many BEE programmes are now being replicated worldwide. The media adviser to BEE for southern states and union territories, A Chandra Shekhar Reddy, presented a Mission LiFE progress report to Krishna Rao, highlighting Visakhapatnam's potential to become a model sustainable city. With its bustling port and growing industrial sector, Visakhapatnam is uniquely placed to showcase the benefits of mindful consumption and energy efficiency, said Chandra Shekhar Reddy. NITI Aayog has identified Visakhapatnam as a growth hub city. BEE, with the support of state designated agencies (SDAs) like APSECM, is also planning to intensify Mission LiFE campaigns in other key cities of Andhra Pradesh — including Tirupati, Vijayawada, Kakinada, Rajahmundry, and Kurnool, added the media adviser. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are contributing significantly to the success of the national energy conservation movement with the support of national organisations such as BEE and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL). "Amid global climate challenges, Mission LiFE is uniting people to safeguard the planet and build a sustainable future. The youth, with their energy and innovation, can be the torchbearers of this transformation," said Chandra Sekhar Reddy. At the beginning, the service is expected to carry 25,000 to 30,000 passengers per day. However, with full-fledged operations by March 2026, the Yellow Line is projected to serve 2.5 lakh passengers daily, helping Namma Metro's overall ridership cross the 10 lakh mark. Prior to boarding the train, officials briefed the PM on the Yellow Line's alignment and features, including the construction of Jayadeva Interchange station, the tallest Metro station in the city with a six-level structure. In March 2023, while launching the extension of the Purple Line from KR Pura to Whitefield, Modi had used the National Common Mobility Card to access the paid area of the Namma Metro. This time, he purchased a QR code ticket using a vending machine at the station. The CM and DCM also used QR tickets for their travel. During the journey, the PM interacted with a group of students who had the rare chance of travelling on the inaugural train. Modi also laid foundation for Phase III of the Metro project — a 45km network covering JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura on the west side of Outer Ring Road, and Hosahalli to Kadabagere on Magadi Road. Bangalore Rural MP CN Manjunath said: "Both the central and state govts together have achieved this. I congratulate both govts. For health purposes, we need BMW — bicycle, Metro and walking. This reduces pollution and traffic congestion." Surya termed the inauguration a "day of victory" after six years of delays due to land acquisition, Covid, and trainset issues.
