17 of Scotland's most popular lost nightclubs and music venues
This retro photo gallery celebrates some of Scotland's best ever clubs, which are sorely missed by the generations of revellers who enjoyed many legendary nights out there over the years.
These atmospheric images take you from the 1960s right up to the noughties, allowing you to relive your best clubbing days, should they be behind you.
The clubs featured include a famous beachfront venue which was Scotland's biggest nightclub; a favourite haunt of Fran Healy, before he hit the big time with Travis; and a popular roller disco.
Many big acts have played at these venues over the years, from the Sugababes and Ian Van Dahl to the Ramones and the Clash.

1 . The Shack
The Shack was a bit of a misnomer for this popular Glasgow nightclub, which was housed in a rather grand former church building. It was popular during the early noughties before sadly being destroyed in a fire in 2004. The venue was also known as Cardinal Follies and The Temple before it became The Shack. 2 . Eros Elite
The Eros Elite superclub in Edinburgh's Fountainbridge district was a huge 3,000-capacity venue which attracted big names including Ian Van Dahl and Dee Dee. 3 . Dennistoun Palais
The Dennistoun Palais de Danse, better known by its less formal moniker the Denny Pally, was a Glasgow institution. It originally opened in 1922 but was destroyed by fire in 1936 and rebuilt. When it reopened in 1938, it was the biggest dance hall in Glasgow, with a capacity of 1,800, and it boasted a sprung floor and a ceiling decorated with stars. 4 . Cinderellas Rockerfellas

Day of the Jackal star Eddie Redmayne brought some romance to Glastonbury as he kissed his wife Hannah Bagshawe at the music extravaganza. The couple, who have been married for 11 years, could barely keep their hands off of one another as they attended the festival while their two children were nowhere to be seen. Dressed down in a beige Nike t-shirt, the Theory of Everything actor, 43, was sipping on a drink in the VIP area where he was mixing with the likes of Sophie Turner and Harry Styles. Meanwhile, Hannah, 42, was also dressed in an understated way, opting for black cut off denim shorts and a t-shirt. 'They could barely keep their hands off one another,' said an onlooker. ''Eddie kept taking Hannah's hand and kissing her, they looked like they were definitely enjoying some time away from their kids. 'You would never have known Eddie is a Hollywood star, he was so understated and went very much under the radar.' Eddie and Hannah married at the exclusive Babington House back in December 2014. Coincidentally, that venue is just a few miles away from Worthy Farm though it isn't known that is where they are staying. Eddie and Hannah first met at while they were students back in 2020. More than a decade later, their friendship eventually turned romantic when he was filming Les Miserables. 'It's great that she found me attractive then and still does,' Eddie told Time Out in 2016. 'It's also wonderful having a shared history and friends, even though we didn't get together for 15 years. Just two years after they began dating, Eddie popped the question. They held an intimate winter-themed wedding in 2015 and have since welcomed two children together - a boy and a girl. Elsewhere at the festival Lewis Capaldi choked back tears as he declaring 'I'm back baby' during his emotional return tothe iconic Pyramid Stage for a secret set. The Scottish singer, 28, was greeted with cheers from the huge Worthy Farm crowd, two years after his battle with Tourettes left him unable to finish his perfomance at the festival and led to a career hiatus. Delighted to back in front of an audience he tearfully said: 'Two years ago I wasn't sure if I'd ever do this again, but I'm back baby!''. Lewis sung a number of his famous hits, before once chocking back tears as he performed brand new single Survive, which highlights the difficult period in his career following his last Glastonbury gig. Fans in the crowd could be seen crying and calling out his name before joining him in a rendition of megahit Someone You Loved. In his emotional speech, Lewis said: ' Glastonbury it's good to be back. Won't say too much up here today as if I do I might start crying, but I can't thank you enough for coming here and being with here'. 'Second times a charm hey! It's a short set today but just wanted to come and finish what I couldn't last time, also this was like the worst kept f*****g secret ever'. Following his set Lewis took to Instagram with footage of his perfomance alongside a post which read: 'Glastonbury it's so incredible to be back, thank you so much for having me x' Fans and famous friends rushed to the comments to welcome the talented musician back into the public eye. Sam Fender said: 'Return of The King', while Alan Shearer said: 'Love It': Paddy McGuinness gushed: 'Governor' and Jade Thirlwall shared a slew of loving emojis. Following his emotional set at Worthy Farm in June 2023, the singer took time off to focus on his mental health and to 'adjust to the impact' of his Tourette's diagnosis. Also performing on Glastonbury's first day was CMAT, Lola Young, Alanis Morissette, as well Lorde with her own secret set.

Aberdeen star's Bond link as he dates Sean Connery's granddaughter
Dante Polvara has been spotted on social media spending time with Sean Connery's granddaughter, Natasha. Aberdeen star Dante Polvara celebrated Scottish cup glory, with a bond girl on his arm. The midfielder was a hero at Hampden as the Dons pulled off a shock Scottish cup victory over Scotland, and by his side was none other than Natasha Connery, granddaughter of Sir Sean Connery- the original James Bond. Polvara came off the bech during the match and calmly scored a penalty in the shootout as Aberdeen won 4-3. The 25-year-old American signed for Pittodrie straight from New York City FC's youth sides. Murray wrote in his book Mettle: "For years, Sean and I would share a catch-up call every weekend to chat through the football and we would inevitably kick off with Rangers. "After all, he had put £1million into the club which no one knew about at the time or even since. "I was raising £50million in 2004 and Sean asked if he could invest. "I told him that it was football, that there were no guarantees and he should get professional advice but he was adamant - he wanted in."

Lewis Capaldi says ‘I'm back baby' as he makes emotional return to Glastonbury
Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi told the Glastonbury crowds 'I'm back baby', as he played a surprise set, two years after a performance at the festival during which he struggled to manage his Tourette syndrome symptoms. The crowd started chanting 'Oh Lewis Capaldi' before he began playing the hit song Before You Go, to kick off his set, which had been listed as 'TBA' on the Glastonbury website. The musician, who announced a break from touring shortly after his performance at the festival in 2023, has just released a new song called Survive. He told fans: 'It's so good to be back. I'm not going to say much up here today, because if I do, I think I will probably start crying. 'But it's just amazing to be here with you all, and I can't thank you all enough for coming out and coming and seeing me. 'Second time's a charm on this one, everybody. 'It's just a short set today, but I just wanted to come and kind of finish what I couldn't finish the first time round.' He performed a 35-minute set on the Pyramid Stage with songs including Hold Me While You Wait and Grace. Introducing his new song, he became visibly emotional as he said: 'The last two years haven't been the best for me, it's been difficult at times. 'This has been my f****** goal, to get back here', he added. He ended his performance with Somebody You Loved, the track that Glastonbury crowds helped him to sing when he struggled with his Tourette symptoms in 2023. The condition causes you to make sudden, repetitive sounds or movements and while there is no cure treatment can help manage the tics, according to the NHS website. He said: 'I really missed doing this for the last two years, it's been difficult at times to like think that maybe this wouldn't ever happen again… 'I couldn't sing this song two years ago for a different reason. I think I might struggle this time for another reason, but this time it's a good reason.' He added: 'My name's Lewis Capaldi and I'm f***** back baby.' Earlier on Friday, alternative pop star Lorde surprised fans with a secret set at Worthy Farm, performing her latest album Virgin, which was released on Friday, in full. Wearing a red dress and headscarf, complete with a red and white starred guitar strap, US pop star Gracie Abrams, covered The Cure's Just Like Heaven during her Other Stage set, which prompted masses of fans on each other's shoulders. The 25-year-old was watched by her father, Star Wars director JJ Abrams, and Brat star Charli XCX, who will headline the Other Stage on Saturday night. Leaving the stage she told the crowd: 'This has blown my mind.' Other celebrities who have been spotted at the festival today include singer Harry Styles, Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne, and Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn. Also performing was rising pop singer Lola Young who treated fans to her UK number one single Messy during her afternoon Woodsies set. The 24-year-old singer, who was wearing a checked dress and black bralet, brought out a blow-up doll with her face on it as she sang her latest single Not Like That Anymore. Addressing the crowd, Young, whose arrival on stage was delayed by 10 minutes, said: 'Thank you to everybody who made this happen, and thank you for being here.' Scottish indie rockers Franz Ferdinand brought out former Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi during their Other Stage set while they were playing Take Me Out, one of their best known songs. Capaldi sang along with the band after being introduced by lead singer Alex Kapranos as 'the original Capaldi'. The celebration of performing arts and music also includes a number of panels with actor Paapa Essiedu and comedian Munya Chawawa discussing black identity in 'Black At Glasto: 'We Shouldn't Be Here''. Essiedu, who is to play Severus Snape in the upcoming Harry Potter series, said he took inspiration from Jay-Z when he performed at the festival in 2008 amid criticism about a rap artist playing at what some people saw as a rock festival. Elsewhere at the festival, British pop rock band The 1975 will be the first headliners to grace the Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage this year when they perform on Friday. Made up of four school friends, the group, known for songs including Chocolate, Someone Else and About You, comprises singer Matt Healy, bassist Ross MacDonald, guitarist Adam Hann and drummer George Daniel. The five-day celebration of music and performing arts, which opened its gates on Wednesday, will also host headline performances from veteran rocker Neil Young and his band the Chrome Hearts, and US pop star Olivia Rodrigo. The BBC confirmed on Thursday that Young's Saturday Pyramid Stage set will not be broadcast live 'at the artist's request'. Festivalgoers had a clear morning after significant rainfall overnight, with temperatures reaching the mid-20s, according to the Met Office. The Met Office's Grahame Madge said: 'Heat and humidity will be building over the weekend. We anticipate highs of 26C on Saturday, with high levels of humidity. By Monday temperatures can be anticipated to be over 30C. 'There is always the chance of a light shower, but there is nothing in the forecast that suggests anything heavier for Saturday for Somerset.' Avon and Somerset Police said there had been 38 crimes reported at the festival, and 14 arrests made. On Saturday Irish rap trio Kneecap, who have had one of their members charged with a terror offence, will perform on the West Holts Stage at 4pm. Before the festival, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said it would not be 'appropriate' for them to perform. Liam Og O hAnnaidh, 27, was charged with allegedly displaying a flag in support of proscribed terrorist organisation Hezbollah at a gig in London in November last year. Last week the rapper, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, was cheered by hundreds of supporters as he arrived with bandmates Naoise O Caireallain and JJ O Dochartaigh at Westminster Magistrates' Court in Free Mo Chara T-shirts. He was released on unconditional bail until the next hearing at the same court on August 20.
