Mukesh Ambani is the wealthiest individual in Asia and is the chairman of Reliance Industries (Reliance). Ambani leads Reliance Jio, which is the largest telecom service provider in India. Reliance has been expanding rapidly and adding large numbers of customers, outpacing its rivals (in terms of customer growth). This has enabled Jio to extend its lead in the Indian telecom market. How many new users did Reliance Jio add compared to Airtel?
Reliance Jio has continued to drive the industry with new subscriber additions, adding 2.7 times more customers than its nearest competitor, Airtel, in June 2025, maintaining the highest market share at 41 per cent, latest data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) showed.
During the month, Reliance Jio added 1.91 million wireless subscribers, whereas Bharti Airtel added 763,482 wireless subscribers, reported news agency ANI. BSNL, MTNL, and Vodafone lost wireless subscribers during the month. Jio has continued to lead with industry leading VLR share increasing by 134 basis points year-on-year and 7x higher year-on-year subscriber additions than nearest competitor Airtel.
Jefferies noted Reliance Jio's continued outperformance versus Bharti Airtel on active subscriber additions augurs well for the sector's overall tariff outlook. 'Jio's 130bps active subscriber market share gain over the past 12 months augurs well for tariff hikes.'Jio also continued to lead in wireline market (including FWA) with 3x higher additions than nearest competitor in June 2025 – increasing market share by 700 basis points year-on-year, driven by AirFiber, where Jio added 3x FWA higher additions than nearest competitor in June 2025.
'Subscriber adds continue to be concentrated in a few markets. Jio's 130bps active subscriber market share gain over the past 12 months augurs well for tariff hikes,' investment banking firm Jefferies said in a report.According to Jefferies, June was the fourth straight month of Reliance Jio's outperformance over Bharti Airtel.
Analysing the TRAI data, Jefferies noted that Bharti Airtel gained subscribers in Metros and A Circles and lost subscribers in B and C Circles. Bharti's subscriber addition was concentrated in circles such as Gujarat, Maharasthra, Mumbai and West Bengal, where its market share is lower vis-a-vis its overall market share. On the other hand, it saw subscriber declines in Bihar, Kerala, Rajasthan and UP (E). Reliance Jio gained subscribers in Metros, A and B Circles and lost subscribers in C-circles. Jio's subscriber addition was concentrated in Gujarat, Mumbai UP (W) and West Bengal, while it recorded losses in Assam, MP, Rajasthan, and Orissa, Jefferies said.

Trump is either blind or ill-informed: Former PM HD Deve Gowda

NEW DELHI: Amidst the govt's strong assertion in the wake of US's 25% tariff imposition that the country will protect its interests, former prime minister H D Deve Gowda on Friday reacted angrily to American President Donald Trump 's remarks on India, calling him the most "volatile, uncivil and irresponsible" head of state in modern history. In a statement, the JD(S) leader said he was "surprised" by Trump's "baseless and ill-tempered remarks" on India and the Indian economy. "I don't think modern history has seen another head of state who has been so volatile, uncivil and irresponsible. Mr Trump has behaved badly not just with India, but with every other country across the world. He has not spared his own longstanding allies," Gowda said. Responding to Trump's characterisation of Indian economy as "dead", the former prime minister said, "India has been the fastest growing economy and is the fifth largest economy in the globe. Mr Trump must either be blind or ill-informed to designate our economy as 'dead'." He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's govt for standing firm against Trump's "bullying". "I am very happy and proud that India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has not compromised our national interest. It has not blinked to Mr Trump's bullying and has shown that it will never be dictated by threat." Gowda also rebuked some opposition leaders who had "rejoiced" at the statements of Trump and "jumped to be his deluded spokespersons in India".

WinZO disputes Google's CCI proposal on Play Store rules

Bengaluru: Real‑money gaming platform WinZO has raised concerns over Google's latest proposal to the Competition Commission of India (CCI), arguing that it does not adequately address the anti‑competitive issues flagged in an ongoing investigation. The case originates from WinZO's December 2022 complaint alleging that Google abused its dominant position by restricting Play Store access to only fantasy sports and rummy apps while excluding other real‑money gaming categories. With Google controlling 96% of India's app distribution market, WinZO said this policy inflated user acquisition costs by 'at least 10x' for apps distributed outside the Play Store. Acting on the complaint, the CCI in November 2024 ordered a formal investigation, citing prima facie violations of competition law, including the imposition of unfair conditions, denial of market access and limiting of market development. The Commission had noted Google's lack of clear criteria for its pilot programme, inconsistent enforcement of its ads policy and 'misleading payment warnings' shown to users sideloading apps, which it said artificially deterred usage. In a public notice issued recently the CCI invited comments on Google's commitment offer. Google's proposal includes allowing all real‑money games that are certified by recognised third‑party bodies, replacing its pilot programme for fantasy sports and rummy apps and permitting certified skill‑based games to advertise on Google Ads. If approved, Google has committed to implement the Play Store changes within 120 days and its advertising changes within 150 days of the CCI's order. The deadline for public comments is August 20, 2025. Responding to WinZO's objections, a Google spokesperson said the company welcomed the CCI's market testing of its proposed framework, describing it as the result of 'constructive discussions' with the regulator and Indian developers. Google added that it is confident the proposal will create 'a more open and safe ecosystem' for real‑money gaming apps, empower local developers and prioritise user safety. In its statement, WinZO said Google's commitments 'must be robust and genuinely eliminate the discriminatory practices identified,' adding that the proposed framework's reference to 'developing' a commercial model for real‑money gaming lacked clear timelines or objective criteria. WinZO, which reported a 70% rise in revenue to Rs 1,055 crore and a 151% increase in profit to Rs 315 crore in FY24, said it will continue to participate in the consultation process 'to ensure fairness, transparency and a level playing field in India's digital economy.'
