"Good Night, and Good Luck" offers tickets for NYC students to see George Clooney on Broadway

CBS News30-04-2025

Broadway's smash hit "Good Night, and Good Luck," starring George Clooney, is making free tickets available for thousands of New York City students.
Through a partnership with the city's Department of Education, 2,000 tickets will be provided to students, including some who are studying journalism.
"Thank you to George Clooney, the producers of Good Night, and Good Luck, and TodayTix for their inspired generosity and recognizing that all the world is truly a stage for our NYC public school students to explore educational and life skills of literacy, artistic interpretation and point of view," the DOE's Director of Theater Peter Avery said in a statement Tuesday. "We look forward to students from across the city creatively learning about the intersection of theater, journalism and politics…on Broadway!"
There was no word on exactly how the students will be chosen or how tickets will be distributed.

"Good Night, and Good Luck" tells the story of CBS News anchor Edward R. Murrow and his battle with Sen. Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s. It's an adaptation of the 2005 film that Clooney co-wrote and directed.
"Journalism is always challenged. Power doesn't like journalism. Never has. Didn't like it when it was Jefferson and Adams, and they don't like it now," Clooney told CBS News New York earlier this year. "My father was an anchorman for 40 years, and we really believe in the idea of holding truth to power.
"It's actually a story about us at our best as Americans, which is holding ourselves accountable, which I think is good," he added.
The play has shattered box office records at Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre so far this season.
There are matinee performances at 2 p.m. on Sundays and 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays, as well as evening performances at 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. There are no shows on Mondays.
The Winter Garden Theatre is located at 1634 Broadway in the heart of Manhattan's Theater District. Tickets are on sale online here, over the phone at 212-239-6200.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr. Open ‘Hamilton' Medley With Original Cast at Tony Awards

There are a million things Alexander Hamilton hasn't done, but reuniting the original cast of the Broadway blockbuster Hamilton isn't one. Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson, Jonathan Groff, Ariana DeBose, and others took the stage at the 2025 Tony Awards in celebration of the musical's 10th anniversary. With the cast dressed in elegant black suits and gowns, the original Hamilton cast earned a standing ovation for their stellar performance of a medley of songs from the musical. It opened with Miranda and Odom Jr., who sang 'Non-Stop.' The rest of the cast joined in for their parts throughout the rapid-fire medley, which included 'My Shot,' 'The Schuyler Sisters,' 'Guns and Ships,' 'You'll Be Back,' and 'Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down.)' It also segued through 'The Room Where It Happens' and 'Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story' before the finale of 'Alexander Hamilton.' More from Rolling Stone The Most Exclusive Tony Awards Party of the Night Was Hidden Inside a Scotch Speakeasy Lil Wayne Fleetingly Reminds Us Why He's One of the Best Cynthia Erivo Belts 'Sometimes All You Need Is a Song' to Open Tony Awards It was a crowded stage, with more than 25 actors bringing their characters back to life. Later this year, Odom will reprise his roll as Aaron Burr for much longer than a few minutes. For 12 weeks this fall, he will return to the cast in what he has called 'a deeply meaningful homecoming.' 'I'm so grateful for the chance to step back into the room — especially during this anniversary moment and to revisit this brilliant piece that forever changed my life and the lives of so many,' Odom shared earlier this year. Hamilton opened on Broadway on Aug. 6, 2015. The musical has earned 11 Tony Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a Grammy Award, and an Olivier. The original cast recording became the first Broadway album to be certified diamond by the RIAA. In 2016, the Hamilton cast performed 'History Has Its Eyes on You,' 'Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down),' and 'The Schuyler Sisters' at the Tony Awards. The reunion follows the recent cancellation of a Hamilton run scheduled at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. 'The Kennedy Center was not created in this spirit, and we're not going to be a part of it while it is the Trump Kennedy Center. We're just not going to be part of it,' Miranda said earlier this year. 'We are not acting against his administration, but against the partisan policies of the Kennedy Center as a result of his recent takeover,' Hamilton producer Jeffery Seller wrote in a statement at the time. 'Political disagreement and debate are vital expressions of democracy. These basic concepts of freedom are at the very heart of Hamilton. However, some institutions are sacred and should be protected from politics.' Savannah Guthrie Wonders ‘What Are Veneers' When Asked Whether She Has a Set of Her Own

Even the most famous journalists can get stumped with a surprise question. While celebrating the launch of 's Joy 101 app in New York City last month, faced an unexpected inquiry from a Parade reporter curious to know if the Today show coanchor has veneers. "What is that, like, braces?" Guthrie, 53, replied. 'I did Invisalign. What are veneers?' Veneers are described as coverings that fit over the front surfaces of your teeth. They can help make one's teeth look bigger, straighter, brighter or remove any space in between teeth. Savannah Guthrie Talks 'Today' Legacy, Motherhood and Hoda Kotb's Exit When the reporter suggested that Guthrie would know if she had them, the NBC journalist agreed and clarified that she didn't have a set of her own. 'OK, I guess no. No, I don't have veneers,' she joked. 'I probably need them. Whatever they are. I gotta go, getting veneers.' These days, Guthrie has other priorities in her life besides those of the dental variety, including bringing the news to millions of Americans via Today and striving to be a good mom to daughter Vale, 10, and son Charley, 8. 'I try really hard to be not just a calm mom, but a joyful mom and a fun mom,' she exclusively told Us Weekly in May at Kotb's launch party. 'But I'm also a real mom, so that means at about 8 on a Sunday night, I'm like, 'Let's go.'' If Guthrie comes close to reaching a breaking point while parenting, she tries to use it as a reminder for her kids that everyone has different emotions at different times. 'They need to see that we're human too,' she explained of moms. 'I don't think that we're supposed to present to them a stoic figure that's not real life. I don't think that's sending them the lesson. I think they need to know that mom and dad, we're human too. We're doing our best, but let's cooperate and get along. I try to strike that balance.' Savannah Guthrie Woke Up Missing a Tooth After a 'Today' Christmas Party One thing that made Guthrie smile recently was having the opportunity to reunite with her friend in the morning. Last month, Kotb, 60, returned to the Today show to hang out with her TV family and give fans an update on her post-morning show life. 'She's our family. This is home for her,' Guthrie gushed to Us. 'It always will be home for her. It was just wonderful to have her there. But it's just exciting for our friends on the plaza to get to see her and everybody wants to know, how are you doing? All the things I've asked her over the last few months. We talk. We've had breakfast. We call. … Our viewers wanted to know that too.'
