Meidroth later scored as part of a three-run rally, but the Sox couldn't complete the comeback in a 7-5 loss to the Kansas City Royals in front of 22,137 on Sunday at Rate Field. 'Great example of continuing to battle,' manager Will Venable said. The Vargas home run gave the Sox a 2-0 lead. Salvador Perez tied it with a two-run home run in the fourth against Mike Vasil, who made his first major-league start. Jonathan India put the Royals ahead in the seventh with an RBI double. Maikel Garcia collected an RBI single later in the inning, making it 4-2. India drove in another run in the ninth with a single. Bobby Witt Jr. hit a two-run home run in the inning, extending the Royals' lead to 7-2. The first five batters reached in the bottom of the ninth as the Sox chipped away at the deficit. They loaded the bases with two outs, but Carlos Estévez struck out Tim Elko to end the game. 'We didn't get the result we wanted, but it's good that we fought through the whole game,' Vargas said. The Sox (22-44) settled for taking two out of three in the series. Here are three takeaways from Rate Field. The Sox scored five runs in the eighth inning of Friday's 7-2 victory, which included a two-run single by Luis Robert Jr. Edgar Quero provided an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning of Saturday's 4-1 win. 'Signing at noon, then an hour and a half (rideshare trip) from Milwaukee to here, then bullpen in the third inning and pitching in the fourth inning,' Alexander said. 'I think that we're lucky that these guys are special players,' Venable said.
