Chandigarh: Not getting its way on the shorter route to the Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, the Chandigarh administration is now eyeing a throwback solution — reopening the old airport terminal.
Attending the 'Northern Region Ministers Conference on Civil Aviation' in Dehradun on Friday, UT chief secretary Rajeev Verma formally proposed reviving the old terminal, which lies just 6 km from Sector 17, compared to the 21 km trek to Mohali's terminal. The move could dramatically cut travel time for city residents.
The administration also sought more international flights from the airport.
"It is the first time the administration has formally proposed reopening the old airport terminal.
It will sharply reduce the distance for the city residents to the airport," said a UT official. The old airport terminal was shut down for civil passengers after the Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport (SBSIAC) Chandigarh, having a terminal in Mohali, became operational in 2015. The old terminal was a civil enclave within the Chandigarh Air Force Station.
"The demand for the operationalisation of the old Chandigarh airport has been consistently made by different sections of city residents.

The demand increased after the plans for the alternative shorter route to the international airport didn't take off," said the official. Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari has also been demanding the operationalisation of the old Chandigarh airport. He raised the issue in Parliament in 2024.
In response to Tewari's question on the re-operationalisation of the old airport, on Dec 19, 2024, minister of state for civil aviation Murlidhar Mohol said there was no proposal to make the old terminal operational for passenger movement.
The administration has been raising the demand for a shorter route to the new international airport for several years but with little success. The matter is also pending in the Punjab and Haryana high court. On the directions of the high court, a proposal for the shorter route to the new international airport was finalised, and even the land acquisition process was started by Chandigarh. But the proposed shorter route got a major setback when the Chandigarh International Airport Ltd (CHIAL) resolved that in the interest of the airport with respect to future growth for the next 30-40 years, the land in respect of the construction of the road from Chandigarh to the airport should be utilised for some other purpose which would be beneficial for the CHIAL as the proposal to construct an alternate route by the UT Administration would hinder future expansion/growth of the airport.
Notably, previously, CHIAL had agreed to the proposal of the Chandigarh Administration to grant permission to use CHIAL land for the construction of the road from Chandigarh to the airport. Punjab has also been reluctant in pursuing the shorter-route project.
The Chandigarh Administration had finalised a tentative proposal to provide an alternate route for SBSIAC Chandigarh from Purv Marg (Jn-63) having a total length of 3.5 km. The alternate route will reduce the travel distance from 11.6 km to 3.5 km (from the junction).

Vote theft row: Congress MP Manish Tewari cites ‘trust deficit' with Election Commission; Akhilesh Yadav presses for reforms

Congress MP Manish Tewari cites 'trust deficit' with Election Commission; Akhilesh Yadav presses for reforms (Picture credit: PTI, ANI) NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) is facing mounting criticism from opposition parties, with Congress MP Manish Tewari and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav both questioning the poll body's credibility in light of allegations over voter list manipulation. As per news agency ANI, Tewari said the Commission was struggling with a 'trust deficit,' arguing that it carried 'very little conviction' and 'almost zero credibility' among political circles and the wider public. Objecting to the current system of appointments for the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners, he stressed that the executive's 'veto' in the process was undermining confidence. 'As long as the executive veto remains with regard to the appointment of the Commissioners of the EC, no matter how many press conferences the EC does it will not matter even one bit whatsoever,' he wrote on X. He further urged the poll body to 'correct the widely held perception that it is an extension counter of the Union Government,' warning that it had acquired a negative label similar to 'Godi Media,' which, he said, was harmful for Indian democracy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party's leader Akhilesh Yadav also targeted the Commission, saying it needed 'not just reform but an inevitable fundamental transformation.' In a post shared on X, Yadav stated, 'The historic responsibility of saving democracy rests on their shoulders. It is understood that they are under various kinds of undesirable pressures, but they should not think they are alone. When the Election Commission starts walking on the right path, the support of millions of Indians will become its protective shield. The public and public trust naturally align with those who walk the path of truth. ' He added that even one 'courageous step' by the Commission could safeguard the future of generations. Yadav's comments came as opposition parties raised objections to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had earlier alleged voter list manipulation and produced what he called 'proof' at a press conference. The Commission, in response, has asked Gandhi to provide a signed affidavit and submit the evidence formally for investigation. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav also joined the criticism, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party of 'misusing Constitutional agencies' and attempting to 'destroy democracy and the Constitution.' He vowed to resist any effort to deny people their voting rights, saying, 'We will fight wherever we want and we will not let our rights be erased.' The Election Commission, however, defended its procedures, stating that errors in electoral rolls should be raised during the 'Claims and Objections' period. According to the Commission, digital and physical copies of the final roll are shared with recognised political parties and candidates to ensure scrutiny at the right time. 'Had these issues been raised at the right time through the right channels, it would have enabled the concerned SDM EROs to correct the mistakes, if genuine, before those elections,' the EC said in its release.

Let us build an India not just of tall buildings but of noble ideals: Kataria

Calling on citizens to contribute to nation-building, UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria Friday said: 'Let us build an India not just of tall buildings but of noble ideals — an India where development is inclusive, and where every citizen works with commitment and love for the nation's progress.' Kataria, who was the chief guest during the 79th Independence Day celebrations at Parade Ground, Sector 17, highlighted the key achievements of Chandigarh's development, law enforcement, education, governance, environment, and health infrastructure. He spoke about the successful rollout of the new criminal justice system, power sector reforms, and initiatives such as free uniforms, recruitment of teachers, and the enhancement of school facilities. Kataria praised Chandigarh's environmental efforts, including rooftop solar expansion and a floating solar plant in Sector 39, while also noting progress in e-governance, public safety, sanitation, and digital services. Addressing the gathering, Kataria extended greetings to citizens and recalled the sacrifices of India's freedom fighters, with a special mention of Punjab's immense contribution to the freedom struggle. He paid homage to Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru, Lala Lajpat Rai, Udham Singh, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Madan Lal Dhingra, and other martyrs who inspired generations with their courage and commitment. He also highlighted India's unwavering stand against terrorism, lauding the swift military responses in Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev, carried out after the Pahalgam attack. On Punjab, Kataria commended welfare schemes such as free healthcare, electricity benefits, educational investments, and sports promotion, stressing the importance of transparency and accountability in governance. A special feature of this year's celebration was the participation of 50 hearing- and speech-impaired individuals, who viewed the parade with real-time sign language interpretation, ensuring inclusivity in the festivities. On the occasion, Kataria honoured 34 Chandigarh Administration employees and civilians with commendation certificates for excellence in public service, arts and culture, social work, and sports. The Administrator's Police Medal was awarded to 24 Chandigarh Police personnel, while three officers received the President's Police Medal for their distinguished services. To mark the occasion, the Administrator declared Monday, August 18, as a holiday for all government, government-aided, and private schools in Chandigarh. The event was attended by Rajeev Verma, Chief Secretary of Chandigarh; Sagar Preet Hooda, Director General of Police; and other senior officials of the administration and police.

Congress MP Manish Tewari ‘empathises' with CM Omar Abdullah after J&K statehood remark

Congress Lok Sabha MP Manish Tewari on Saturday backed Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah's criticism of the Union territory's governance, calling the dual administration system 'structurally built for failure.' Manish Tewari supports Omar Abdullah's critique of J&K's governance, calling the dual administration system 'structurally built for failure."(HT/PTI ) During his first Independence Day speech since returning as chief minister, Abdullah made one of his sharpest remarks on the non-restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. He described the dual governance system as structured 'not for success' but 'for failure' and, for the first time, addressed his government's decisions that remain stalled with the Raj Bhavan. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Manish Tewari wrote, 'I can empathise with Omar Abdullah. As an MP from a Union Territory with just a Municipal Corporation and not even a legislative assembly, unlike Jammu & Kashmir, Puducherry, or even the NCT of Delhi, this system of diarchy is systemically and structurally built for failure and not success. It is a completely unworkable model of governance.' At Bakshi Stadium, Abdullah announced a signature campaign demanding the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and questioned the prolonged delay. He said well-wishers had assured him of significant change, but admitted his hope was beginning to wane. 'We waited impatiently for that speech,' he said, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day address. 'I was even told that the documents are being prepared… We waited. It did not happen. The truth is that the ray of light has started to fade,' he added. However, Abdullah stressed that he is not 'helpless' and refused to accept the status quo. Reacting to CJI BR Gavai's reference to the Pahalgam attack in statehood deliberations, Omar Abdullah called it 'unfortunate' and directly challenged the notion of allowing terror to dictate the region's political future. 'Will the killers of Pahalgam and their masters in the neighbouring country decide whether we will be a state?' he asked. 'Every time we are close to statehood, they will do something to sabotage it. Is this fair? Why are we being punished for a crime in which we had no role?' he added.
