OPS insists his group is part of NDA
AIADMK
coordinator
O Panneerselvam
, who leads a splinter group, on Thursday expressed disappointment at not being invited to meet Union minister
Amit Shah
during his visit to Chennai, when the poll deal with AIADMK general secretary
Edappadi K Palaniswami
was finalized. "It saddens us that we were not invited," he told reporters following a two-day meeting with functionaries to discuss election strategies. But Panneerselvam maintained that he was still part of the
NDA
.
He said the views of district functionaries were recorded, and a well-informed decision will be made after gathering views of cadre and public at the district level within the next two weeks. He affirmed his group's continued association with the NDA. "We contested Lok Sabha elections as part of NDA. We are still part of the NDA. There is no difference of opinion in that," he said, while seeking to clarify that he did not seek an appointment with Amit Shah.
Regarding the allotment of two leaves symbol by the EC to AIADMK led by Palaniswami, Panneerselvam said it was an interim arrangement since the Erode bypoll.
Asked whether he would accept the Palaniswami-led NDA, Panneerselvam said he would not like to reply to hypothetical questions.
He added that his group was focussed on securing the rights of cadre, as laid down by party founder M G Ramachandran in the party bylaws, to ensure that even a cadre can become party general-secretary.

CM Sukhu announces ₹100cr for disaster-hit families
Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced ₹100 crore immediate relief package for disaster-hit families and ₹3,000 crore project aimed at disaster mitigation and livelihood protection. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu highlighted the disparity in the state's financial aid.(PTI) The CM, during his 79th Independence Day speech, announced a series of measures to address recurring disasters in Himachal. 'Frequent disasters have caused heavy losses to life and property,' he said. Referring to the massive losses incurred during the 2023 disaster, which caused damages of ₹10,000 crore, Sukhu highlighted the disparity in the state's financial aid. 'Despite the central government's own assessment, Himachal received only ₹1,500 crore, that too after two years,' he said, adding that this year's disasters, especially in Mandi district, have caused severe damage. The state has not received any financial assistance from the Centre so far. 'The state government had already disbursed ₹360.42 crore from its own resources to aid the affected families. I hope the Centre will soon extend financial support to disaster-affected families,' he added. On the education front, Sukhu praised the reforms implemented by the state government, positioning Himachal fifth in the country for quality education. 'Teachers in all government institutions will no longer retire in the middle of the academic session, but at the end of the session,' Sukhu said. He also revealed plans to open 200 CBSE curriculum-based schools and fill 9,535 teaching posts in the coming days. In a bid to bring transparency, Sukhu addressed the issue of corruption in the previous BJP-led government's recruitment processes. 'The Himachal Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Board, a hub of corruption, has been disbanded,' he said. 'In its place, the Rajya Chayan Aayog will conduct computer-based tests to ensure transparency.' 'Merit-based selection will now include both written exam and interview marks, with stringent measures to combat cheating, including a provision for three years' imprisonment for exam-related offences. For this, the government will bring a bill in the next assembly session,' he said.

Kerala CM slams PM Modi for praising RSS in I-Day speech
T'puram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for praising RSS in his Independence Day speech. He stated that giving credit to RSS and V D Savarkar for Indian independence was a denial of history. Vijayan said it was a dishonour to the independence struggle that the Prime Minister chose Independence Day itself to eulogize those who worshipped the British. RSS was banned in connection with the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, and Savarkar faced conspiracy charges related to the murder, the chief minister said. Any amount of ridiculous efforts to whitewash an organization like RSS would not work. The conspiracy behind such an exercise was clearer in the Union petroleum ministry's Independence Day poster, featuring Savarkar above Gandhiji, he added. "It shows the panic of those who fear the history of the freedom struggle," Vijayan said in a statement. "Indians joined the national independence movement beyond caste, religion, dress and language differences. RSS played the role of bystanders then. They openly opposed the fundamental ideological concepts of the freedom movement. Instead of the unity in diversity that Indian nationalism upholds, they promoted a Hindutva nationalism based on majority communalism. On Nov 26, 1949, when the Constituent Assembly gave final approval to India's Constitution, the RSS mouthpiece, Organizer, editorialized that Manusmriti should be upheld instead of the Constitution," the chief minister said. Vijayan said Savarkar boycotted the Independence Day celebrations on Aug 15, 1947. It was this same Savarkar whom the Sangh Parivar is now projecting as a leader of the freedom struggle. RSS, which stood aloof throughout the phases of the freedom struggle, is now engaged in creating false narratives to claim a role in the national movement. "What respect do those who called for observing Aug 14 as a day of Partition horror have for Independence Day?" he asked. The nation must stand united against any attempt to bury the history of humanity and mutual respect and replace it with hatred, he added.
