85,000 students provided with uniforms, says Minister Muthusamy in Erode

Minister for Housing, Prohibition, and Excise, S. Muthusamy, said that 85,000 students studying in Classes VI to VIII were given uniforms as schools reopened in the district on Monday. In the presence of Collector Raja Gopal Sunkara, Erode MP K.E. Prakash, MLA V.C. Chandhirakumar, and Mayor S. Nagarathinam, the Minister inaugurated a new building block and laboratories worth ₹2.50 crore at the Government Higher Secondary School in Nanjappa Goundan Valasu, Surampatti. The project was funded under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative by Bengaluru-based Alice Blue Financial Services Private Limited, as part of the State government's 'Namma School – Namma Ooru Palli' scheme. Addressing the media, the Minister said that special initiatives by the Education Department helped government schools, which were previously ranked among the bottom 30 positions in the previous public examination results, and that this had significantly improved their pass percentages, with some achieving centum results. He noted that boys tend to score lower marks than girls in examinations and that this gap would be addressed. However, he acknowledged that girls' academic performance has been consistently improving year after year. He also assured that the distribution of uniforms to all students in the district would be completed in the coming days. On the issue of POCSO cases, the Minister revealed that over 250 school-related incidents were reported last year and that immediate action was taken. 'This academic year, preventive measures will be implemented to ensure such issues do not recur,' he said. Responding to AIADMK general secretary and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami's criticism that the DMK government failed to bring education under the State List, Mr. Muthusamy asserted that the government has been consistently advocating for shifting education from the Concurrent List to the State List. He questioned why, during the AIADMK's 10-year rule, no concrete steps were taken on the matter by the then Chief Minister. Deputy Mayor V. Selvaraj, Chief Education Officer K. Subbarao, Headmaster N. Rajesh, and M. Sidhavelayutham, Founder and CEO of Alice Blue, along with several others, were present at the event.

Traders warned against selling seeds without valid license

The Seed Inspection Wing of the Department of Seed Certification and Organic Certification, under the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, has warned traders against selling seeds without a valid license. According to a release, the Office of the Deputy Director of Seed Inspection, Erode, has enforcement jurisdiction over the entire Erode District and parts of Tiruppur District. It operates through six seed inspectors stationed in Erode, Gobichettipalayam, Bhavani, Sathyamangalam, Dharapuram, and Kangeyam. The sale of seeds and related activities is regulated by the Seeds Act, 1966; the Seeds Control Order, 1983; the Seeds Rules, 1968; and the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. The release emphasised that no individual or entity is permitted to sell seeds without a valid license, and any violation of these laws is subject to prosecution. The release also stated that there are 73 government seed selling points, 231 quasi-government seed selling points, and 638 private seed sellers in the district, including 88 nurseries that sell vegetable, fruit, and coconut seedlings. P. Sumathi, Deputy Director of Seed Inspection, Erode, said that over the past four years, the wing has conducted 22,667 inspections at seed selling points and collected 19,188 official seed samples for quality analysis. Of these, 319 seed lots were found to be substandard and did not meet the minimum seed specification standards. Consequently, stop-sale orders were issued for 833 seed lots, totalling 781.81 tonnes of seeds valued at ₹2.96 crore. She further stated that stringent action will be taken against seed sellers who violate the provisions of the Seeds Act and related regulations.

OPS insists his group is part of NDA

Chennai: Former AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam , who leads a splinter group, on Thursday expressed disappointment at not being invited to meet Union minister Amit Shah during his visit to Chennai, when the poll deal with AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami was finalized. "It saddens us that we were not invited," he told reporters following a two-day meeting with functionaries to discuss election strategies. But Panneerselvam maintained that he was still part of the NDA . He said the views of district functionaries were recorded, and a well-informed decision will be made after gathering views of cadre and public at the district level within the next two weeks. He affirmed his group's continued association with the NDA. "We contested Lok Sabha elections as part of NDA. We are still part of the NDA. There is no difference of opinion in that," he said, while seeking to clarify that he did not seek an appointment with Amit Shah. Regarding the allotment of two leaves symbol by the EC to AIADMK led by Palaniswami, Panneerselvam said it was an interim arrangement since the Erode bypoll. Asked whether he would accept the Palaniswami-led NDA, Panneerselvam said he would not like to reply to hypothetical questions. He added that his group was focussed on securing the rights of cadre, as laid down by party founder M G Ramachandran in the party bylaws, to ensure that even a cadre can become party general-secretary.

Residents of Suriyampalayam in Erode stage protest over delay in providing basic amenities

Condemning the prolonged delay in provision of basic amenities in their area, the residents of Annai Theresa Nagar at Suriyampalayam in Erode Corporation limits staged a sit-in protest on the Collectorate premises during the weekly grievances redress meeting on Monday. They placed their petitions, ration cards, and Aadhaar cards on the ground in a symbolic protest. The residents, mostly daily wage workers, said that over 60 families have been living in the area for more than 18 years without access to essential services such as toilets, drainage systems, drinking water connections, or electricity. Despite repeated appeals to elected representatives and officials, their demands remain unfulfilled. They added that while they possess ration and Aadhaar cards, they do not own land or houses and continue to live in dire conditions. They alleged that police did not allow them to enter the meeting hall to submit their petitions. Only a few individuals were permitted entry, prompting others to place their documents on the ground and stage protest. Erode Tahsildar Muthukrishnan and police officials held discussions with the protesters and later took a few representatives inside to submit the petitions. However, as the residents refused to take back the documents they had laid on the ground, a government staff member collected all the cards.
