85,000 students provided with uniforms, says Minister Muthusamy in Erode
In the presence of Collector Raja Gopal Sunkara, Erode MP K.E. Prakash, MLA V.C. Chandhirakumar, and Mayor S. Nagarathinam, the Minister inaugurated a new building block and laboratories worth ₹2.50 crore at the Government Higher Secondary School in Nanjappa Goundan Valasu, Surampatti. The project was funded under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative by Bengaluru-based Alice Blue Financial Services Private Limited, as part of the State government's 'Namma School – Namma Ooru Palli' scheme.
Addressing the media, the Minister said that special initiatives by the Education Department helped government schools, which were previously ranked among the bottom 30 positions in the previous public examination results, and that this had significantly improved their pass percentages, with some achieving centum results.
He noted that boys tend to score lower marks than girls in examinations and that this gap would be addressed. However, he acknowledged that girls' academic performance has been consistently improving year after year. He also assured that the distribution of uniforms to all students in the district would be completed in the coming days.
On the issue of POCSO cases, the Minister revealed that over 250 school-related incidents were reported last year and that immediate action was taken. 'This academic year, preventive measures will be implemented to ensure such issues do not recur,' he said.
Responding to AIADMK general secretary and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami's criticism that the DMK government failed to bring education under the State List, Mr. Muthusamy asserted that the government has been consistently advocating for shifting education from the Concurrent List to the State List. He questioned why, during the AIADMK's 10-year rule, no concrete steps were taken on the matter by the then Chief Minister.
Deputy Mayor V. Selvaraj, Chief Education Officer K. Subbarao, Headmaster N. Rajesh, and M. Sidhavelayutham, Founder and CEO of Alice Blue, along with several others, were present at the event.

Resume Kudimaramathu if elected: Farmers to EPS
THOOTHUKUDI: Farmers in the district have appealed to leader of opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami to resume 'Kudimaramathu scheme' if his party comes to power in the 2026 election. The appeal was made during EPS's interaction with entrepreneurs, farmers, salt producers, fishermen and advocates here on Saturday. On the occasion, farmers said the DMK government has failed to pursue the Kudimaramathu scheme which was instrumental in protecting and deepening the waterbodies. 'The tank beds are filled with silt deposits that had reduced the storage capacity,' they said, adding that it resulted in flooding in December 2023. Representing two lorry owners' associations, Suburaj urged for a truck terminal in the city as inadequate parking facilities lead to traffic issues. 'Trucking terminals are required in every town to set right traffic issues, as lorry transportation play a vital role in industrial development,' he said. The industrialists said the electricity tariff hike has become a cause for concern amid power interruptions during late hours. A few industrialists and a bishop urged EPS to protest against drug menace immediately, as the contraband, according to them, is easily available to high school students now.

CM Stalin pushed for ban on lighters before EPS, says Anbarasan
CHENNAI: Following AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami's assurance to Kovilpatti matchbox workers that lighters would be banned if his party came to power, MSME Minister TM Anbarasan said that the union government had already banned lighters under Rs 20 and the import of their spare parts, based on CM MK Stalin's demands. Anbarasan on Saturday said Stalin had written to the union ministry of commerce and industry in September 2022, demanding a ban on lighters. 'Although lighters under Rs 20 were banned in June 2023, spare parts were imported from various countries and assembled locally to sell lighters. We took up the matter again and pushed for the ban of spare parts in October 2024.' He further said that although during the Russia-Ukraine war the import of potassium chloride was affected, the TN government 'acted swiftly and procured it through Chennai Petrochemicals, and supplied it to matchbox manufacturers.' The Tamil Nadu government had also announced a facilitating centre for 'Kadali Mittai' manufacturing at a cost of Rs 7.13 crore with Rs 6.42 crore subsidy.

According to a Times of India report, Chahal's unexpected death in California has left his friends, associates, and supporters grappling with grief and unanswered questions. Chahal, the founder and CEO of The Khalsa Today, was a vocal opponent of Khalistani elements operating abroad. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD His death has raised suspicions, particularly due to its timing—just weeks before a significant Khalistan Referendum event scheduled for August 17 in Washington DC, which he had been actively working to counter. Friends and associates have pointed to the frequent death threats Chahal received from pro-Khalistan groups, underscoring the risks he faced for his unwavering advocacy. The pro-Khalistan movement is banned in India, and the government deems action associated with the movement as terrorism. Several such organisations, despite New Delhi's objection, still continue their operations in nations like Canada, UK and the US. Details of Chahal's tragic death Jaspal Singh, a close friend of Chahal, shared details of the tragic incident, which occurred after Chahal attended a dinner at an acquaintance's home on Thursday (July 31). 'Shortly after the meal, his health rapidly declined, and he passed away on the spot,' Singh recounted on Saturday, stressing that Chahal had been in good health before. The utter suddenness of his demise has fueled speculation about the circumstances surrounding his death. Authorities are actively investigating the case, with an autopsy report pending to determine the exact cause of death. Chahal was widely regarded as a courageous voice against extremism, consistently urging Indian immigrants to uphold the laws of the United States and avoid criminal activities. In a recent post on his X account, he wrote, 'The United States is a society of law and order. Crimes like assault by foreign visitors will not be tolerated. If you break the law in US, your US visa can be revoked, and you may be ineligible to return to the US.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
