Resume Kudimaramathu if elected: Farmers to EPS
The appeal was made during EPS's interaction with entrepreneurs, farmers, salt producers, fishermen and advocates here on Saturday.
On the occasion, farmers said the DMK government has failed to pursue the Kudimaramathu scheme which was instrumental in protecting and deepening the waterbodies.
'The tank beds are filled with silt deposits that had reduced the storage capacity,' they said, adding that it resulted in flooding in December 2023.
Representing two lorry owners' associations, Suburaj urged for a truck terminal in the city as inadequate parking facilities lead to traffic issues.
'Trucking terminals are required in every town to set right traffic issues, as lorry transportation play a vital role in industrial development,' he said. The industrialists said the electricity tariff hike has become a cause for concern amid power interruptions during late hours. A few industrialists and a bishop urged EPS to protest against drug menace immediately, as the contraband, according to them, is easily available to high school students now.

Had Chief Minister M.K. Stalin given good governance since 2021, there would not have been any need to organise outreach campaigns like Ungaludan Stalin and Nalam Kaakkum Stalin. These camps are being held now to hoodwink the people, seven months ahead of the Assembly election, AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami has said. Addressing a meeting as part of his Makkalai Kaappom, Thamizhagaththai Meetpom campaign in Tenkasi, Mr. Palaniswami said the AIADMK government opened over 2,000 Amma Mini Clinics across Tamil Nadu with a doctor, a nurse, and an assistant in the areas where the poor lived. Since the DMK government closed these mini clinics, the AIADMK would again open 4,000 them on returning to power in 2026. After closing down the 'Amma Mini Clinics', Mr. Stalin had launched Nalam Kaakkum Stalin one-day health screening camps after being in office for four years. Apart from opening 'Amma Mini Clinics', 254 new Primary Health Centres were opened by AIADMK government besides upgrading 168 PHCs each with 30 beds with sufficient number of doctors. 'If Mr. Stalin, who collected petitions in the boxes during the run-up for 2021 Assembly elections, had addressed all those complaints during these four years, there would have been no need to organise Ungaludan Stalin and Nalam Kaakkum Stalin dramas now, which are enacted to hoodwink the people ahead of the next Assembly elections,' Mr. Palaniswami alleged. After the AIADMK, by giving laptops and other assistances to the students, increased the Gross Enrolment Ratio to 54%, the highest in India, in 2019, the Stalin-led DMK government stopped giving free laptops to the students. 'We gave 52.35 lakh free laptops at an estimate to ₹7,300 crore to students. We'll give you free laptops again when we return to power,' he said. Mr. Palaniswami read out the DMK's 2021 poll promises for Tenkasi district — a law college in Tenkasi, textile park in Sankarankovil, government polytechnic in Kadayanallur, cold storage for fruits and vegetables at Puliyangudi, Speccial Economic Zone in Tenkasi, Government Medical College in Tenkasi, mango squash factory, Ramanadhi — Jambunadhi linking, government forest college in Tenkasi, and asked the people: 'Has Mr. Stalin fulfilled any of these promises?' The former Chief Minister promised the voters that the Tenkasi Collectorate, which is yet to be inaugurated after being built at an estimate of ₹119 crore, would be opened once the AIADMK comes to power.

Plot to include Bihar voters in Tamil Nadu, alleges CPI
The Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary R. Mutharasan on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) alleged that there is a plot to include voters from Bihar, whose names were removed from the electors' list, in the Tamil Nadu voters' list. Speaking to the reporters in Salem, Mr. Mutharasan charged the Election Commission of India (ECI) with turning into a 'BJP Commission'. In the name of Special Intensive Revision (SIR), it is trying to include the Bihar voters in the Tamil Nadu electors' list, he alleged. According to Mr. Mutharasan, the people of Tamil Nadu and also AIADMK cadre have not accepted its alliance with the BJP. The Union Government, he said, did not allocate funds for Tamil Nadu in many projects. 'Those who enter into alliance with the BJP will be considered as betrayers. The AIADMK general secretary, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, joined hands with the BJP, which betrayed Tamil people,' he contended. Alleging that the Union Government had moved away from the country's non-alignment policy, the CPI leader said the United States President Donald Trump is now deciding whom India should have friendship with. The U.S. is threatening India not to buy oil from Russia, which is condemnable. Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi moving away from the policy of non-alignment, India is stuck in trouble, he said. The CPI State conference will be conducted in Salem from August 15 to 18. Mr. Mutharasan said that on the second day, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and alliance partners are participating in the seminar titled 'Velga Jananayagam' (Victory for Democracy).

After 14 years, Tamil Nadu records double-digit growth in real terms
After a gap of 14 years, Tamil Nadu has recorded a double-digit economic growth rate in real terms during 2024-25 with 11.19%, according to the revised estimates of the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation for various States. In 2010-11, the State registered 13.12%. Coincidentally, on both occasions, the DMK was in power. The latest revised estimates were prepared as on August 1, 2025. Fifteen years ago, the base year was 2004-05, whereas it is 2011-12 now. Former Director of the Madras School of Economics, K.R. Shanmugam, attributes the growth to the strong performance by the tertiary and secondary sectors. About five months ago, when the State-wise advance estimates were made public, Tamil Nadu's real economic growth was 9.69%. The latest figure marks an increase of about 1.5 percentage points. Apart from having finished the topper, Tamil Nadu has accomplished what no other State has done — recording the double-digit growth. It may be noted that the data for six States — Goa, Gujarat, and four northeastern States — have not been made public yet, apart from those for two Union Territories. In fact, the figures exceeded the forecast made in the Tamil Nadu Budget presented early this year. The State government was modest in projecting Tamil Nadu's nominal Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) to grow at 14.5% in 2024-25, with real growth put at 9% and an average inflation of 5%. But the real growth is higher by nearly 2.2%. At constant prices (base year: 2011-12), Tamil Nadu's GSDP is estimated at ₹17,32,189 crore for 2024-25, up from ₹15,57,821 crore in 2023-24. The revised figures also indicated stronger performance for 2023-24, with the real GSDP growth revised upward from 8.23% to 9.26%. However, the growth estimated for 2022-23 had been reduced from 8.13% to 6.17%. Going by the data on per capita Net State Domestic Product (NSDP) at current prices, Tamil Nadu ranked third among major States in 2024-25, with an estimated per capita income of ₹3,61,619, following Telangana (₹3,87,623) and Karnataka (₹3,80,906). Commenting on Tamil Nadu's economic trajectory, Dr. Shanmugam, who is serving the Finance Department as Economic Consultant, hopes that if the State continues to maintain its growth, aided by strong export performance, it is on track to achieve its target of a trillion-dollar economy by 2031-32. The higher growth rate is likely to lead to significant improvement in fiscal indicators, such as lower fiscal and revenue deficit and debt-to-GSDP ratio. If all the major sectors grow by half-a-percent more than what they did in 2024-25, the State economic growth may be around 12% during the current year (2025-26), he points out. According to the Union Ministry's data, the growth rate figures of select States for 2024-25 were Uttar Pradesh-8.99%; Andhra Pradesh-8.21%; Telangana-8.08%; Karnataka-7.37%; and Maharashtra-7.27%.
