Sister pays tribute to drowned Briton who ‘died trying to save his friend'

The sister of a British man who drowned in Portugal has said he died trying to save his best friend's life.
King Edonmi, 29, and Mo Liasu, 27, both from Ipswich, lost their lives less than 24 hours after arriving on holiday in Albufeira, on Portugal's southern coast.
The pair are believed to have drowned in a hotel swimming pool on July 15.
Candles, flowers and tealights spelling out the men's names have since been laid near flats on Ipswich Waterfront.
Kemi Edonmi, King's sister, paid tribute to her brother online, writing: 'My best friend is really gone.
'Rest in peace to my big brother and his best friend Mo, we love you and will never forget you both.
'The whole family is comforted by the fact that King died in Christ.
'From Jesus – For Jesus – Back to Jesus. We shall all meet again.'
She said King had died while trying to save Mo's life.
'My brother died trying to save his friend's life,' she said.
Some local reports suggested the men had been drinking, but Ms Edonmi insisted this was not true.
'My brother and Mo do not drink and were not intoxicated at the time of the incident,' she wrote.
'Articles with false information and insensitive comments don't know the pain they're causing the people closest to King and Mo.'
A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: 'We are supporting the families of two British men who have died in Portugal and are in contact with the local authorities.'
A fundraising page launched in the men's memory has raised more than £22,000 to help pay for the repatriation of their bodies.
It said: 'On what was meant to be a joyful holiday in Portugal, our two dear friends Mo and King tragically lost their lives less than 24 hours after arriving.
'What was supposed to be sunshine and laughter turned into heartbreak no one could have imagined.'
The Policia Judiciaria, Portugal's criminal investigation police, said the incident is not being treated as suspicious.
A spokesperson said: 'The inspection of the scene revealed no evidence of criminal activity.
'Witnesses to the events were interviewed, confirming the investigation's belief that it was an accident.'

Missing La Crosse graduate student Eliotte Heinz found dead, officials say

A graduate student who was reported missing from La Crosse, Wisconsin, over the weekend has been found dead. The La Crosse Police Department said Eliotte Heinz's body was found in the Mississippi River near Brownsville, Minnesota, around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. "This was not the outcome we had hoped for throughout this search," La Crosse Police Chief Shawn Kudron said. "Our thoughts are with Eliotte's family, friends and all those who knew Eliotte. We are grateful for the outpouring of support from so many within the La Crosse community, the State of Wisconsin and nationally to locate Eliotte." The community had been searching for Heinz since she disappeared in the early morning on Sunday near the 500 block of Front Street South. Her school, Viterbo University, had been acting as a headquarters for volunteers in the search. Police are still investigating. Her cause of death is not yet known. Brownsville is about 15 miles down the river from La Crosse.

George Baldock died in pool accident with no substances in system

Former professional footballer George Baldock died in an accident in his own swimming pool with no drugs or alcohol in his system, an inquest has found. The 31-year-old Greece international had been living in Athens after recently signing for Panathinaikos when he died on October 9 last year. He spent the majority of his career playing as a defender for MK Dons and Sheffield United, having been born in Buckinghamshire, and had played a club fixture just three days prior to the incident. An inquest into Baldock's death at Milton Keynes Coroner's Court on Wednesday confirmed his medical cause of death as drowning. His family had previously said in a statement that Baldock had 'tragically drowned' whilst swimming in the pool at his home. An investigation by Greek police after the incident also found no evidence of criminal activity. Baldock was discovered in the swimming pool at his address, in the Glyfada district of Athens, on October 9 and attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful, the inquest heard. A post-mortem examination found no drugs or alcohol in his system and that he had a very large heart 'that would have meant that he was susceptible to heart arrythmias', where the heart beats too fast, too slowly or irregularly. Senior coroner for Milton Keynes Tom Osborne concluded Baldock's death was an accident. Tributes were paid across the country in the days after Baldock's death, including by his former clubs and at a Nations League match between England and Greece at Wembley where the stadium held a period of silence and both teams wore black armbands. In a statement released at the time, Baldock's family said: 'George, you were the most special father, fiance, son, brother, uncle, friend, team-mate and person. 'Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those that were fortunate enough to know you and those that adored you from the stands. 'We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son.' Baldock was due to fly home the following day to celebrate his son's first birthday, his family said.
