India thwarts China-Pakistan ploy at SCO Summit, rejects biased draft statement

India Today9 hours ago

At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's Defence Ministers' meet in Qingdao, China, India refused to sign a draft statement that excluded reference to the Pahalgam terror attack but included the Balochistan train hijacking incident. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called on SCO members to work together to reduce terrorism risks in the region. The lack of consensus on terrorism concerns prevented the finalisation of a joint statement.
The discussion focusses on India's diplomatic efforts to counter Pakistan's global outreach and state sponsorship of terrorism. Panellists debate the effectiveness of Operation Sindoor and India's response to US President Trump's claims about mediating between India and Pakistan. The need for stronger outreach to organisations like BRICS and SCO is highlighted. Pakistan's strategy of maintaining 'effective parity' with India through various means is also analysed.

Rajnath Singh Meets Chinese Counterpart At SCO Meet, Discusses 4-Pronged Plan To Manage Border Tensions, Better Ties

New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh participated in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Qingdao, China, emphasising the need for collective action against terrorism and extremism. During his meeting with Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun, Singh strongly condemned Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, underscoring the urgent need for cooperation to combat this global threat. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh proposed a comprehensive four-point plan to ease border tensions and improve diplomatic ties with China during a bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Qingdao. The plan outlines a framework for cooperation, including adherence to the 2024 disengagement plan, continued efforts to de-escalate tensions, accelerated border demarcation and delimitation, and utilising the existing special representative level mechanism to manage differences and foster better relations. This initiative aims to address longstanding issues and promote cooperation between the two nations. During the meeting, Rajnath Singh also raised the matter of Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism. In this context, he stressed that Operation Sindoor is now "India's principled position" against the issue. US talks to Pakistan about promoting ‘durable peace between Israel and Iran'

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a call on Thursday in which they discussed promoting 'a durable peace between Israel and Iran,' the State Department said in a statement. President Donald Trump, earlier this week, announced a ceasefire between US ally Israel and its regional rival Iran to halt a war that began on June 13 when Israel attacked Iran. Trump met Pakistan's army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir at the White House last week where they discussed Iran, which Trump said Pakistan knew about better than most other countries. A section of Pakistan's embassy in Washington represents Iran's interests in the United States, as Tehran does not have diplomatic relations with the US. The Israel-Iran conflict had raised alarms in a region that was already on edge since the start of Israel's war in Gaza in October 2023. The US struck Iran's nuclear sites over the last weekend and Iran targeted a US base in Qatar on Monday in retaliation, before Trump announced an Israel-Iran ceasefire. Israel is the only Middle Eastern country widely believed to have nuclear weapons and said its war against Iran aimed to prevent Tehran from developing its own nuclear weapons. Iran is a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty while Israel is not. Pakistan condemned Israeli and US strikes on Iran even as it said earlier this month it was nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in bringing a four-day India-Pakistan conflict to an end last month.

‘Should be prosecuted': Donald Trump lashes out after Pentagon intel leak on Iran nuclear strikes

U President Donald Trump on Thursday accused congressional Democrats of leaking classified information about recent US military strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities and called for them to be 'prosecuted.' US President Donald Trump speaks in the East Room of the White House in Washington, DC, US, on Thursday, June 26, 2025.(Bloomberg) 'The Democrats are the ones who leaked the information on the PERFECT FLIGHT to the Nuclear Sites in Iran. They should be prosecuted,' Trump posted on Truth Social, without offering evidence. The Republican President also criticised the media coverage of the leaked intelligence and demanded that the journalists involved in reporting the document be fired. The leak in question involved a preliminary assessment by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) saying that the recent strikes under America's Operation Midnight Hammer may not have had as severe an impact on Iran's nuclear program as initially claimed by the administration, reported news agency AFP. In response, the White House announced tighter controls on classified information shared with Congress, a move that has sparked backlash from Democratic lawmakers. Trump administration escalates offensive against critics 'President Donald Trump created the conditions to end the war, decimating — choose your word — obliterating, destroying Iran's nuclear capabilities,' AFP quoted Hegseth as saying during a press conference at the Pentagon on Thursday. Also Read | 'I think he likes me': Trump reacts to being called 'daddy' by NATO chief Mark Rutte Hegseth criticised the coverage of the report, singling out major news outlets. 'Whether it's fake news CNN, MSNBC or the New York Times, there's been fawning coverage of a preliminary assessment,' he said. He suggested the leak was driven by an anti-Trump agenda: 'It was leaked because someone had an agenda to try to muddy the waters and make it look like this historic strike wasn't successful.' White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also attacked the media, calling the Iran operation 'one of the most successful operations in United States history.' She accused CNN reporter Natasha Bertrand, one of the journalists who reported on the leak, of being 'used by people who dislike Donald Trump in this government to push fake and false narratives.' CNN responded by saying it stands by Bertrand and her reporting. He added that the operation was a 'spectacular military success,' he declared, a line echoed by senior officials, including Pete Hegseth. Operation Midnight Hammer Last weekend, American B-2 stealth bombers dropped more than a dozen GBU-57 bunker-buster bombs on Iran's nuclear facilities at Fordow and Natanz. A third target, the Isfahan facility, was hit by Tomahawk cruise missiles launched from a US navy submarine. The strikes came days after Israel launched an unprecedented air campaign on June 13 targeting Iranian nuclear scientists, military commanders, and enrichment facilities. Though Iran has maintained that its program is civilian in nature, Washington and its allies have long accused Tehran of seeking atomic weapons.
