Nepal has been named the host nation for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 Qualifier, scheduled to take place from January 12 to February 2, 2026. The tournament will feature 10 teams competing for four prized spots at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, which will be held in England and Wales. The qualifier promises to be a high-stakes competition, offering teams a chance to secure their place at the prestigious main event. Bangladesh and Ireland have already secured automatic entry into the Qualifier after participating in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024. Hosts Nepal and Thailand have booked their spots through the Asia regional pathway, while the USA will represent the Americas region. The remaining five places in the Qualifier will be filled once regional competitions in Africa, Europe, and East Asia-Pacific conclude. Two teams each from Africa and Europe, and one from East Asia-Pacific will complete the 10-team lineup. The format of the Qualifier will see the teams divided into two groups of five, followed by a Super Six stage and a Final. 'I really don't know why Gambhir was upset...': Former India captain reacts to pitch controversy

Gautam Gambhir (L), Sourav Ganguly (R) Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Thursday said he was unable to understand head coach Gautam Gambhir's reaction after Surrey's head groundsman, Lee Fortis, prevented the Indian team from closely inspecting The Oval pitch during Tuesday's practice session ahead of the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series. Sourav Gaunguly addressed the pitch controversy 'I really don't know why Gambhir was upset. I'm sure all coaches and captains have discussions with the groundsmen sometimes happily, sometimes unhappily. It's happened in my time, it's going to happen in future also. So let's not just make too much out of it. I wish India play well, win the Test and level the series,' he said. On Tuesday, while head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak were inspecting the central square at The Oval, Surrey's head groundsman, Lee Fortis, intervened and asked them not to get too close to the pitch. Worried about potential damage from excessive foot traffic, Fortis asked the Indian staff to stay at least 2.5 metres away from the playing surface a request that didn't go down well with Gambhir. In a video that went viral on social media, Gambhir was seen walking aggressively toward Fortis, pointing a finger at him during the exchange. A later report by ESPNcricinfo described the heated confrontation, claiming that Gambhir allegedly told Fortis he was 'just a groundsman.' In response, Fortis reportedly warned the former India opener that if he continued using foul language, he would be reported to the ICC match referee. Kotak admitted he felt 'awkward' While speaking to the reporters. Kotak admitted that he felt 'awkward', when the Indian staff where asked to to maintain distance from he pitch despite note wearing spikes. 'When some of us coaches went to see the wicket, a member of the groundstaff said stay away at least 2.5 metres, which was a little surprising,' Kotak said. 'Because it is the pitch, the match is starting day after, it will be a five-day Test, and we're standing in our joggers, so we felt a little awkward.' However, Kotak chose not talk about the spat between Gambhir and Fortis'[We were] just looking at the wicket, with rubber spikes, day after there's a Test match there, there's nothing wrong [with that]. Curators also need to understand the people they are talking to, they are highly skilled and intelligent. For example, if you go on the ground now where we practised, you won't even see that any bowler in the outfield would have marked with his spikes. That all comes from the head coach. We try and see this ground also doesn't get damaged.'

Was Rohit Sharma Forced To Retire From Tests? Former India Team Manager Reveals

Last Updated: Indian men's team's former manager has confirmed Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket by choice, not BCCI pressure. Jaydev Shah, the Indian men's team's manager during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has confirmed that Rohit Sharma decided to retire from Test cricket on his behest. It assuages some speculation over one of the most important developments in the team's recent history because some still believe he was nudged or even pressured to it by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s bosses. Shah did say that Rohit was 'dropped' from the fifth Test in Sydney — at the time, Rohit said that he had taken a step back himself due to his form — and that the BCCI wanted to build for the future, while believing that Rohit perhaps couldn't hold his own in Tests for the next two years. However, he added, that Rohit also wanted the team to build with new stars for the next World Test Championship cycle. 'He had a baby, he came back and he couldn't make runs," Shah said in a podcast named Voices of Impact with Arjun Mirani. 'Okay, he was out of form. He was dropped from the last Test, but then he won the Champions Trophy. I think he thought it was time for him to play white ball more than red ball and give another cricketer a chance. I think the board was looking at things like, we have to prepare our team for the next championship. That's a two-year cycle so it's better if new players get set and get there," he added. Rohit didn't announce retirement immediately after the Test series against Australia, only doing that in May, just weeks before India's team selection for the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England. 'And it didn't seem like Rohit could take it for two more years. He also had his injury, he didn't play a couple of IPL matches because of that either. I think that's what he thought, and left for the team to grow and build nicely in the new cycle. Such big decisions are taken by big people like Rohit themselves," Shah added. India appointed Shubman Gill as captain for England and the team is currently trailing 2-1 in the five-Test series with the final match ongoing at the Oval, London. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
