Mauricio Pochettino on absent Christian Pulisic: 'Players cannot dictate the plan'
But before and after the USMNT went through its final pre-tournament training session on Saturday, Pulisic's absence continued to be a hot topic.
For the uninitiated, Pulisic asked not to participate in the Gold Cup because of fatigue following two grueling seasons with Italian club AC Milan. That decision was roundly criticized by a number of former U.S. legends, most notably Landon Donovan.
On Thursday, Pulisic finally explained his reasoning during an interview with CBS Sports, and revealed that he wanted to play in this month's two pre-Gold Cup exhibitions versus Türkiye and Switzerland. Pochettino, who wanted to use the same squad all summer, turned him down.
"That's the coach's decision," Pulisic said. "I fully respect that. I didn't understand it, but it is what it is."
During his pregame press conference on Saturday, FOX Sports asked Pochettino about Pulisic's comments. The former Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur manager didn't hold back.
"Players don't need to understand," Pochettino said. "Players need to listen and to stick with our plan. They cannot dictate the plan.
"He explained why he only wanted to be involved in two games and not the Gold Cup, and I respect that," added Pochettino. "I understand him. But I do need that he understands our decision.
"When I signed my contract with the [U.S. Soccer] Federation, I am the head coach. I am not a mannequin."
Pulisic also told CBS, whose parent company produces a documentary series on him, that he hasn't spoken with Pochettino much since the Argentine was hired last September on a contract through next summer's World Cup.
"We had one phone call where we discussed everything," Pulisic said. "He understood kind of where I was coming from, and that' as much conversation as I've had with him."
Pochettino said that he makes sure not to talk to any particular player more than any other, so it doesn't seem like he's playing favorites.
"I love to be in communication with my players," the 53-year-old said. "I love to communicate, but at the same time, I want to [ensure] that all the players feel the same respect from the coaching staff and from myself."
A few hours earlier, before the Americans trained in nearby Santa Clara ahead of Sunday's match at PayPal Park, home of the San Jose Earthquakes, U.S. veteran Chris Richards was asked about what has become a public feud between Pulisic and Donovan.
"At the end of the day, we're just focused on the people that are here," Richards said. "Of course, Christian's a big part of our group. But he's not here. So we just focus on the people who are here and who are ready to win. That's been kind of our big message."
It has to be. For a team that enters the regional championship having lost four consecutive games, beating the Soca Warriors has to be where all their energy and attention is directed. A win on Sunday would help put the spotlight back on the field.
"I think in the last few months, we've had a lot of people talking kind of down on the team, which is okay," Richards said. "We love our fans. We love our haters as well. So we kind of take that and it gives us motivation to, hopefully, change the narrative."

Very happy with my week in Cincinnati and feeling ready for the US Open.' This is the fourth consecutive tournament that Sinner and Alcaraz have both played in that they have met in the final, matching the record since 2000. They also contested the Rome and Roland Garros finals, won by Alcaraz, before Sinner took the trophy from the Spaniard at Wimbledon. This is the sixth different Masters 1000 tournament that Alcaraz has won in his career, leaving just three trophies to add to his collection to complete the career set. He will have a chance to get two of them later this fall in Shanghai and Paris but will have to wait until next summer to make another run at the trophy in Montreal. Both players will now head to the final major of the year at the U.S. Open where Sinner defends his title and his No. 1 ranking, which Alcaraz could take if he is able to lift the trophy. The defending champion will also look to take three of the four majors this season, while Alcaraz tries to even the split at two apiece. Alcaraz also avenges his loss in the 2023 Cincinnati final, where he was beaten by Novak Djokovic in one of the best Masters 1000 finals of all time. While he didn't win this match in the fashion that he would have wanted with Sinner's illness, he will be happy to finally get his hands on this trophy after that loss two years ago. National Football League Jerry Jones Shares What Micah Parsons' Agent Told Him When Presented With Deal Updated Aug. 21, 2025 6:35 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Jerry Jones claims that Micah Parsons' agent, David Mulugheta, didn't have kind words to say when he received the details about the contract the two sides allegedly agreed to in March. "When we wanted to send the details to the agent, the agent told us to stick it up our ass," the Dallas Cowboys owner said on Michal Irvin's podcast. Jones added that he and Parsons had agreed to "everything" on his next contract, including term, total value and guaranteed money. However, he said that Mulugheta told him that the two sides still needed to negotiate on the matter. "Well, I already negotiated. I already moved off my mark on several areas," Jones said of what he told Mulugheta earlier this offseason. "So, the issue, very frankly, is that we've had the negotiation in my mind. The agent's trying to get his nose in it right now and come in there and improve off the mark that we already said. "We've got this deal resolved, in my mind, for the Dallas Cowboys," Jones added. "We've got it done and if the agent wants to finish up the details, which sure it and do all the paperwork, then he can do that. We're ready to go. But, as far as the amount of money, the years, the guarantees, we've negotiated that." ADVERTISEMENT Mulugheta has been a key reason for the dispute between Parsons and the Cowboys. When Parsons requested a trade earlier this month, he shared that his agent hadn't been involved in contract talks even though the star edge rusher wanted Mulugheta to be included. A day later, Jones said that he didn't want to involve Parsons' agent, citing a situation that happened with Dez Bryant as to why he doesn't talk to agents. As Mulugheta still hasn't been involved with contract talks surrounding Parsons, Jones made another real-life comparison for the situation. "It's the momma-daddy deal," Jones said. "You go into momma and she won't do it, and she's the boss. She won't do it, so you run into daddy and daddy says, 'Do it.' Then, you go back in and say, 'Momma, daddy says it's alright.' It's the ole mommy-daddy deal. Earlier Thursday, Jones complimented Parsons in an appearance on "FOX & Friends," but also explained why the team hasn't met the star pass rusher's contract demands yet. "Micah's a great player, not a good player but a great player," Jones said on Thursday. "He knows more than anyone that it's a team thing," Jones said. "And so, I know everybody is tired of hearing this, but you got to put this puzzle together so that you can have some other people out there playing with Micah — that's the art of the deal. "And that's what we're trying to get done, and we're trying to make this thing work. We have all the appreciation for what he can mean for the years ahead. We're proud to have him." Jones' comments on Thursday continued a string of more positive comments the team has about Parsons, who remains a hold-in at practice nearly three weeks after he requested a trade. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer told reporters he felt "good" about Parsons' chances of playing in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday. Jones also expressed optimism that Parsons would be in the season opener last week as well. However, whatever optimism the Cowboys might be displaying about the situation would run contrary to a recent ESPN report that said both sides are "dug in" on their respective sides in contract talks. The report also indicated that a divorce between the Cowboys and Parsons would be the most likely outcome. Still, Jones has expressed that the team won't honor Parsons' trade request as he hopes to get a longterm deal done with his top defensive player. "I wouldn't be standing here with you if I didn't think we potentially had a great future with Micah," Jones said earlier in August. "We're in good shape. This is negotiation. But make no mistake about it, life has to go on if something happens to me or anybody else. Life does go on." Parsons, 26, is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is in line to be the next edge rusher to receive a massive payday. There's been some speculation that he's likely in line to receive a deal that surpasses the three-year, $123 million extension ($108 million guaranteed) T.J. Watt signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in July to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. Parsons hasn't stated what he's seeking in contract talks. But he shared that he hasn't liked how things have gone with Jones and the Cowboys in negotiations, revealing that the team hasn't talked to his agent at all in this process. "Up to today, the team has not had a single conversation with my agent about a contract.
