Bournemouth host Petersfield aiming to extend winning run

Yahoo14-02-2025

BOURNEMOUTH host Petersfield as they once again aim to extend their winning run in Regional Two South Central.
The Lions' current run stretches to 14 games, after they beat North Dorset at the start of February.
They beat Petersfield 46-33 back in November away from home, but director of rugby Will Croker said he views Saturday's visitors as one of the best teams in the league.
'I think that they've lost a few games or they've missed out on some results that would have seen them far higher up the table,' Croker said.
'They've got a very experienced squad, Dan Sargent and Liam Perkins and Matt McLean, all very experienced National League rugby players.
'They've got a good crop of youngsters that come in and bolster them.
'We played very well at their place.
'We never really let them into the game and we tried to suffocate their attacking intent and we've got to do something very similar this time.
'That said, we're really confident at home. We're undefeated so far this season at home and we're on a good winning run and there's real confidence amongst the boys.'
The game comes after a fallow week, which Croker said was difficult to get a flow going at this time of year, with another coming the week after the Petersfield match – although that has allowed them to focus on it as almost a one-off game.
But he said he understands the purpose of the gap weekends and said they had used the time well to rest some players and restore them to fitness.
Ben Meaden returns to the Bournemouth side at fly half, replacing Louis Ellis, as they aim to give him some game time in the first team before the run in.
Croker also said Meaden helped to run the game against Petersfield earlier this season and got the Lions attack ticking.
Matt Horne returns at number eight, Joe Rees at open-side flanker and Conrad Carkeet at hooker in the pack, while Jordie Wayman comes into the centres.
'We're feeling pretty confident that we've got a strong side out,' Croker said.
'We've now just got to almost move into cup final mode and we've put ourselves in with a shout now and we've just got to keep doing what we can do.
'Each week we've got to try our hardest to pick up a win and if we can, the bonus point and then we'll have to wait and see what happens to the other results around us. But we feel like we're in a good place.'
Bournemouth's second team face Ellingham and Ringwood as they look to force their way into the top half of the table, with Ellis dropping into that team alongside Carlos Snell and the returning Callum McKenzie.
'We're really looking to try to put together a performance there that can galvanise the side for the rest of the season,' Croker said.
The third team travel to Poole with a strong side, including former first team captain Dan Cawley who returns from a spell out.

Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong Poised to Start at MLB All-Star Game

Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong Poised to Start at MLB All-Star Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs are one of the best teams in all of baseball, and they have one of MLB's biggest rising stars. At just 23 years old, Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has emerged as one of the top players in baseball this season. Advertisement Right now, he is hitting .276 with 55 RBIs and an OPS of .866. Oh, and his 17 home runs this season are suitable for the top 10 in the MLB, tied in eighth place with the New York Mets' Pete Alonso. Coincidentally, the budding superstar was drafted by the Mets five years ago and was traded to Chicago back in 2021 in a deal that sent Javier Baez to New York. According to Bren MaGuire, Crow-Armstrong is now expected to be one of the league's first-time All-Stars this season. Chicago Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong (4) gestures after hitting a one run single against the Cincinnati Reds during the third inning at Wrigley Banks-Imagn Images "With his 20th steal on June 3, Crow-Armstrong became the fourth-fastest player in the Modern Era (since 1900) to record 15 home runs and 20 stolen bases, reaching the mark in just 60 games," Maguire wrote. Advertisement Maguire also noted that as of Friday, June 6, Crow-Armstrong placed third in WAR at 3.8. That sits just behind the Seattle Mariners' Cal Raleigh (4.0) and the New York Yankees' Aaron Judge (5.6). The Chicago outfielder joins Francisco Lindor and Raleigh on the list among players who are yet to start an All-Star game, while his Cubs' teammate Kyle Tucker was named an honorable mention. Crow-Armstrong has become a favorite amongst the Chicago fanbase and MLB fans alike, which positions him well as a potential All-Star starter in the National League's outfield. Mets' Statement on Juan Soto's Big Night

Mets' Statement on Juan Soto's Big Night originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Mets have the best record in the National League and backed it up Tuesday night at Citi Field. With a thrilling 5-4 win in 10 innings over the Nationals, they extended their lead over second-place Philadelphia to five games in the NL East. Advertisement While team success has come early and often this season, star free agent Juan Soto has been slower to catch fire in his new uniform. But after Tuesday's performance, two hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs, the Mets are hopeful Soto is starting to find his groove. Following the win, the team shared a short but telling message. 'Big night for Soto.' It didn't start that way. Soto was called out on strikes in his first at-bat, but he quickly bounced back. In the third inning, he belted his 12th home run of the season, cutting the Washington lead to 3-2. He grounded out in the sixth, but his next trip to the plate proved critical. Advertisement In the bottom of the eighth, Soto delivered a clutch two-out double to right, scoring Starling Marte and later scoring himself to tie the game. After a scoreless ninth, Jeff McNeil walked it off in the 10th, driving in Luisangel Acuna, who was pinch-running for Brett Baty. Soto's night capped an encouraging stretch. He's now 8 for his last 15 in June, showing signs of heating up at just the right time. New York Mets outfielder Juan Soto (22).John Jones-Imagn Images Through 66 games this season, Soto is batting .248 with 12 home runs and 33 RBIs. It's a dip from last year's performance with the Yankees. When he played 157 games, he hit .288, crushed 41 homers and drove in 109 runs, the second straight year with exactly 109 RBIs. Advertisement Soto began his career with the Nationals in 2018, was traded to San Diego in 2022, and played all 162 games for the Padres in 2023. The Mets made headlines in the offseason by locking him up with a 15-year, $765 million contract. He'll remain in Queens through at least 2040. New York's message is clear: Juan Soto's bat is waking up, and the rest of the league should take notice.
