Jan Vertonghen: Former Tottenham defender to retire at end of 2024-25 season
Anderlecht captain Jan Vertonghen, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur, has confirmed he is retiring from playing at the end of the 2024-25 season.
Vertonghen made 315 appearances for Spurs between 2012 and 2020, helping the club reach the Champions League final in 2019.
The 37-year-old retired from international football last year, having made a national record 157 senior appearances for Belgium across 17 years.

The defender has played for Anderlecht in his native Belgium since leaving Benfica in 2022, but has made just five first-team appearances this campaign due to injury.
'I have noticed that it is becoming more and more difficult to prepare myself physically for training sessions and matches and to show myself as the player I want to be,' Vertonghen said on Tuesday.
'Not only towards the fans and my fellow players, but also towards myself. That is why I will be stopping after this season.'
Vertonghen won the Eredivisie and Dutch Cup twice with Ajax before joining Spurs, and after leaving the north London club — where twice being named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year — the centre-back won the Portuguese league title with Benfica.
Anderlecht are currently fourth in the Belgian top division and eight points behind league leaders Genk.

Looming Kevin Durant trade may impact Celtics offseason
One of the biggest trade dominoes set to fall this offseason is Suns forward Kevin Durant. The All-Star was shopped around by Phoenix at the trade deadline last year and with the team failing to even make the postseason last year, significant changes appear to be on the horizon in the desert. The Suns have used most of their future draft assets already so the only way for them to recoup some of them is to shop Durant this summer. The Celtics understandably aren't expected to be a Durant suitor given his age, salary and Jayson Tatum's Achilles tear. However, Boston will be keeping an eye on where Durant ends up since it would have some implications on the Celtics potential moves this offseason along with the team's future outlook. Advertisement Shams Charania of reported last week that the Spurs are showing interest in the veteran while Kelly Iko of the Athletic also pegged the Rockets as a suitor for the 36-year-old. Phoenix radio host John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM provided some extra context to those Durant rumors on Tuesday. 'The team that I heard last night in speaking to somebody pretty close to the situation with KD is keep your eye on the Spurs,' Gambadoro said on his show. 'KD could have some interest in the Spurs. That might be a good landing spot for him, with Fox and Wembanyama and an up-and-coming team on the rise that has a great defensive anchor.' The timetable of the move could be on the horizon this month as well for Durant if there is significant draft capital involved, according to Gambadoro. Advertisement 'I expect, I'm not guaranteeing this, but I would expect that a KD deal would happen right before the draft,' Gambadoro said. 'Because you'd want to include draft capital in any deal, so I think that a Kevin Durant trade would come up this month, sometime before the draft. Probably close to the draft, if it's going to happen.' Durant earns $54.7 million next season, so any trade involving him and the Suns will have to involve significant salaries being sent out by whatever team he lands with. Trades of these size sometimes open the door for a third or even fourth team to get involved. Given Boston's need to move some excess salary this offseason, they certainly could try to work their way into a deal to help move secondary pieces. The other aspect of this worth watching for Boston naturally is where Durant ends up. The Celtics will certainly be rooting for Durant to stay in the Western Conference to help keep the balance of power in the league away from the East as Boston gears up to retool around Tatum after he recovers from a torn Achilles. There have been a few reported Durant suitors (New York, Miami) in the East but Western Conference teams like Houston and San Antonio have built up more assets to use in a potential Durant deal. The Suns just hired a new head coach in Jordan Ott according to ESPN so how the team proceeds with Durant heading into the NBA Draft in three weeks will be worth monitoring from Boston's perspective. Jaylen Brown trade rumors: Celtics star linked to new team by NBA insider
The San Antonio Spurs are well-equipped to make a big splash this offseason after landing the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. With plenty of emerging young talent and the recent addition of De'Aaron Fox, they have been linked to Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo in trade rumors already as well as Kevin Durant. However, one NBA insider believes that Celtics All-Star Jaylen Brown could also be on the Spurs radar. Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated made the comments on Wednesday during NBC Sports Boston's Off C'season special. Advertisement 'The team I'd watch the closest with Jaylen Brown is probably the Spurs,' Mannix said 'Sure, I think they would love to make a run at Giannis, but do the Bucks ask for Stephon Castle? Like, is that on their wish list? And if it is, I can't see San Antonio doing a deal like that.' If the Spurs are looking for a star with a lower asking price than Antetokounmpo, Mannix believes that Brown could be a feasible option for San Antonio. 'I think if you're Boston, you're not going to ask for a Stephon Castle. You're not going to get a Stephon Castle in a potential Jaylen Brown deal. You would get the No. 2 pick back in return. You would get the Devin Vassells, the Keldon Johnsons, future first-round capital. That's something I'd watch if and when the Giannis Antetokounmpo stuff shakes itself out over the next few weeks.' Brown signed a super-max extension with the Celtics two years ago and still has four guaranteed years remaining on his deal. He's set to make $53.1 million next season, the second-biggest salary on Boston's roster beyond Jayson Tatum. The Celtics are widely expected to trim down their payroll in the coming months from $227 million, but largely rumored options include moving Jrue Holiday or Kristaps Porzingis. Any deal involving Brown would be a bigger reset of the franchise around Tatum as he recovers from a torn Achilles. Advertisement The Spurs have plenty of long-term flexibility to take on Brown's massive deal, but they won't for very long. De'Aaron Fox is expected to look for an extension when his contract expires beyond this year, and Victor Wembanyama will need a max extension beginning in 2027-28 in all likelihood. Whether Brown is the best star fit around that duo for the long term will be an interesting question for the Spurs as they consider other stars at the forward spot. San Antonio holds two lottery picks (No. 2 and No. 14) in the NBA Draft, which kicks off on June 25. Whatever direction they decide to go in, that night will be telling for the team's long-term plans. More Celtics content Read the original article on MassLive.

Erling Haaland career goals, Premier League records, stats, 2024-25 season video highlights
Erling Haaland had an incredible start to the 2024-25 season, even by his own very high standards, but he cooled off considerably and — unsurprisingly — so did his club. Haaland scored a goal within 18 minutes of his Premier League season debut, as Man City won at Chelsea, and the goals kept on coming for the 24-year-old Norwegian. Advertisement [ WATCH: Haaland scores absurd back-to-goal marker in UCL ] In Week 2 he scored a hat trick against Ipswich, then grabbed another hat trick against West Ham in Week 3 to take his tally to seven goals in three games to kick off the new campaign. Week 4? It took 20 minutes for him to score versus Brentford. Week 5? Less time. My word. [ MORE: Premier League table — Standings from 2024-25 season ] The 24-year-old Norwegian's Premier League Golden Boot tally sits at two and he was a heavy favorite to make it three. Advertisement Haaland has 85 Premier League goals in 97 league appearances, as he's now 15 goals away from hitting 100 in the English top flight.
