EPF income rise could mean bigger dividend

Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: EPF announced on Thursday that its total investment income rose three per cent to RM38.92 billion in 1H 2025 from RM37.90 billion in 1H 2024, with the investment income surging 22 per cent to RM20.61 billion in the second quarter of 2025 (2Q 2025) from RM16.91 billion in the same quarter last year. Kuala Lumpur: The higher Employees Provident Fund (EPF) investment income in the first half of 2025 (1H 2025) is likely to lead to a higher dividend payout for the year, while a sustained rally in global equity markets could further boost third-quarter performance, said economists. EPF announced on Thursday that its total investment income rose three per cent to RM38.92 billion in 1H 2025 from RM37.90 billion in 1H 2024, with the investment income surging 22 per cent to RM20.61 billion in the second quarter of 2025 (2Q 2025) from RM16.91 billion in the same quarter last year. The largest retirement fund in Malaysia said equities remained the largest contributor to its investment income in 2Q, generating RM13.77 billion—a 35 per cent increase compared to RM10.23 billion in 2Q 2024. Putra Business School Professor Dr Ahmed Razman Abdul Latiff said that although there is a possibility to see a higher dividend payout for 2025, judging from 1H 2025's performance, the percentage increase from a year earlier will likely not be significant. 'This is due to a higher percentage of new contributors and voluntary contributions, which brings higher contributions and therefore, a higher amount of allocation for dividends is needed just to maintain the same percentage, and even more if the dividend is higher,' he told Bernama. Ahmed Razman explained that the increase in new contributors and voluntary contributions, while reflecting greater awareness among employees about preparing for retirement, also contributes to the higher allocation needed to maintain the dividend percentage. During 1H 2025, the EPF registered 286,194 new members, raising total membership to 16.4 million. New employer registrations reached 37,402, increasing total active employers registered with the EPF to 619,662 as at June 2025, while voluntary contributions increased by 55 per cent to RM11.68 billion in 1H 2025 from RM7.55 billion a year earlier. Meanwhile, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said EPF's 1H 2025 performance was supported by the global equities market, which rebounded in 2Q 2025, as in 1Q 2025. He said this was in comparison to its 1Q 2025 investment income, which fell 13 per cent to RM18.31 billion from RM20.99 billion in the corresponding quarter in 2024. 'Thus far, we have seen the global equities market continue to stage a respectable increase, which should contribute positively to the 3Q performance,' he said. However, Mohd Afzanizam noted that the degree of economic uncertainties due to the tariff imposed by the United States (US) and geopolitics will continue to shape market sentiments. 'Apart from that, global interest rates are on the way down, indicating that growth momentum worldwide is slowing, which will inadvertently impact EPF's investment performance,' he said. Nonetheless, Mohd Afzanizam said that if EPF can maintain a similar dividend rate at a time when market volatility remains apparent, it would be commendable, as the retirement fund's wealth of experience in navigating challenges, coupled with its disciplined asset allocation strategy, will help it achieve respectable investment returns for the whole of 2025. In 2024, EPF declared a dividend rate of 6.30 per cent for conventional savings, with a total dividend distribution of RM63.05 billion and 6.30 per cent for Shariah savings, with a total distribution of RM10.19 billion. The 6.30 per cent dividend rate for both conventional and Shariah savings for 2024 is the highest since 2017. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? MARA Approves Over 20 Assistance Applications From PWD Entrepreneurs This Year

SIBU, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- More than 20 applications for assistance from entrepreneurs who are people with disabilities (PWD) across the country have been approved by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) this year, involving an allocation of over RM500,000. Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang said the assistance includes grants and interest-free loans of up to RM50,000 per person, depending on business needs. "In Sarawak, two disabled entrepreneurs have received this special funding, including Mohamad Hazemi Mat, 31, the owner of Duri Cendol here, who is also deaf, and another in Matang, Kuching," she said when met by reporters after a friendly visit to the Duri Cendol premises last night. Rubiah said Mohamad Hazemi's business, which has been operating since December 2023, is now recording a monthly income exceeding RM35,000, in addition to employing seven deaf and mute disabled workers. She emphasised that MARA is committed to helping the disabled become successful entrepreneurs through a comprehensive support ecosystem that includes training, grants, loans, monitoring, and business development programmes. Rubiah said she had also proposed to MARA the establishment of a special fund to assist Bumiputera contractors in Sarawak involved in the high-tech and renewable energy (green energy) industries. The funds, she said, is aimed at producing more Bumiputera entrepreneurs in the technology and green energy sectors, thereby opening up new business opportunities in Sarawak. "I have asked MARA if they can help create such a funds so that we can produce more Bumiputera entrepreneurs in technology and renewable energy industries. "We need to bring this proposal to MARA's management and also to the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development itself for a decision," she said.

Papayas, bananas pave road to success for young farmer

Muhammad Qayyum Zunkurnain picked up the tricks of the agricultural trade by helping his father, himself a farmer. (Bernama pic) KUALA KANGSAR : While most of his peers have chosen salaried jobs or to pursue higher education, Muhammad Qayyum Zunkurnain has opted for farming gear and hard work. Today, the 24-year-old earns a lucrative income by cultivating papayas and bananas on 3.25ha of land. Qayyum told Bernama that he learnt the ropes of agriculture by observing his father, himself a farmer. 'I would help him grow vegetables and, once I finished SPM, I started my own small business selling bananas and papayas,' he recalled. As things went along, however, he realised he didn't have enough supply to keep up with demand. 'So I decided to grow my own to meet the needs of customers.' Qayyum embarked on his venture with a small amount of capital – just enough to buy him 1,000 papaya and banana plants. Today, his farm has 3,000 papaya trees and 4,000 banana plants, which provide him with monthly revenue of up to RM13,000. He said he chose papayas as they are in high demand among Malaysians, particularly older people, thanks to their digestive-health benefits. Papayas also serve as an interim crop while the bananas mature. Asked about papaya cultivation, he said it is not particularly difficult in Malaysia, as it only has two main seasons – wet and dry. During rainy seasons, the trees flower easily and bear fruit quickly. Running a farm is hard work, but Qayyum's efforts have paid off with monthly revenue of up to RM13,000 and further plans to expand. (Bernama pic) Still, things haven't always been easy. 'At first, I failed after planting 1,000 papaya trees. But I tried again and thank God, it worked. Then, demand started increasing,' Qayyum shared. 'But even now, the fruits from my farm are only enough for local consumption and to market to Perak, Penang and Selangor to be sold at night markets. In fact, the recent hot weather affected fruit production and led to a shortage in our locality.' Qayyum, who is married, added that some people initially looked down on his profession. But after seeing his impressive returns, many have approached him asking to work on his farm and learn to follow in his footsteps. He has also received support from the Senggang and Manong Area Farmers Organisation, Perak agricultural department, and the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama). And eventually, he hopes to produce downstream items from the literal fruits of his labour. 'For now, though, my farm isn't big enough. To develop a product line, I would need more than 10,000 trees – but I'm working towards that goal,' he said.
