Fitzgibbons, Wilson fall short in Gold Coast Pro final
The 36-year-old squared off against Felipe Toledo in the title decider which was a repeat of their 2015 final, also won by the Brazilian, and was edged in a thriller 17.60 to 17.20.
Fellow Australian Sally Fitzgibbons also went down swinging in the women's final at Burleigh Heads with Hawaii's Bettylou Sakura Johnson claiming her first World Surf League trophy.
After almost four years away from the tour, Wilson claimed the sole wildcard for the main event by winning the pre-competition trial and then surfed his way all the way through to Saturday's final.
He and two-time world champion Toledo went blow for blow, with the crowd packed on the headland roaring their approval for both veterans for their lofty airs and searing turns.
In his first final for 2025 after taking last season off, Toledo, who scored a perfect 10 ride in his semi-final, set the benchmark early with an 8.53 which he backed up with a 9.07.
Former world No.2 Wilson kept hammering, with his top scoring waves of 8.80 and 8.40 coming in the back-end of the final in a heated finish between the rivals.

But in the end there was no fairytale finish and fifth title for the Sunshine Coast product, who will compete in the Challenger Series next year.
"It's not easy to step away from the thing you love to prioritise your family and watch from the sidelines and I guess these surfers inspire me so much," said an emotional Wilson.
"This is what I was born to do. My kids got to share it this week and it's been super, super special."
Seeking her first CT title since a win at Rottnest Island in 2021, Fitzgibbons was also denied by the Hawaiian young gun.
The 34-year-old threw everything at her young rival, surfing a mammoth 13 waves, but fell short with a two-wave score of 7.83 to Sakura Johnson's impressive tally of 15.33.

The Gerroa surfer went to the air four times, trying to stick a landing that would give her a score to put her back in contention, but she was unable to seal the deal.
"I wanted to get it together so bad in that final but it was Betty's day," Fitzgibbons said.
"It's been a fight and a grind in the last few years, but I want to be here and my deep desire is to keep surfing."
It was Sakura Johnson's second win of the day over a local hope after earlier eliminating top-ranked Australian Molly Picklum in the quarter-finals.
"This is the best feeling in the world, and I'm over the moon to have my first win here on the Gold Coast," said Sakura Johnson, competing in her second final after bursting on to the scene as a 16-year-old.
"This is what winning feels like, and I want to keep winning."
Fitzgibbons outscored Erin Brooks in the semi-finals earlier in the day, with the Canadian wunderkind eliminating six-time Gold Coast champion and eight-time world title holder Stephanie Gilmore in the quarters.
With Gilmore's former coach Jake Patterson in her corner, Brooks used superior wave selection to get the better of the Australian legend, who is due to return to the tour full-time next year.

Panthers down Titans in golden-point thriller
Penrith five-eighth sensation Blaize Talagi has scored a golden-point try for the ages to down a brave Gold Coast 30-26 in a drama-charged classic at Robina. Panthers halves Talagi and Nathan Cleary orchestrated a 24-0 lead by halftime before the Titans hit back in stunning fashion in front of 18,174 fans. Gold Coast fullback AJ Brimson and half Jayden Campbell turned it on with sheer individual brilliance as the hosts scored five tries in 25 minutes to take a 26-24 lead in the 74th minute. Cleary, as only he can, landed a 41m two-point field goal in the 79th to take the match to golden point. He then missed his first field goal shot from 30m out before 20-year-old Talagi started and finished a 60m attacking raid in the 83rd minute.. The Panthers secured an eighth consecutive victory to leave the four-time defending premiers on 29 competition points, just one behind the fourth-positioned Warriors. In an ominous omen, Penrith have made the grand final on all five occasions (2003 and 2020-2024) they have previously won eight in a row. The Panthers are capable of challenging for a fifth straight title but will need to heed lessons from their great escape. They were cruising at halftime but the Titans had other ideas. Talagi seals the game in golden point! 💥Telstra Moment of the Match — NRL (@NRL) August 2, 2025 Brimson sent centre Brian Kelly in before Campbell intercepted a Cleary pass to race 90m and get the 16th-placed Titans on the board. Campbell was at it again to step and weave his way through and hooker Sam Verrills dived over from dummy-half. Minutes later Phil Sami finished off a Brimson bust and the lead had been cut to two. Sami was in again after Penrith muffed a Kieran Foran bomb and Gold Coast led 26-24 with six minutes to play. The high drama continued when a Panthers trainer ran in front of Campbell as he was preparing to line up the conversion. He missed after re-setting. The Titans scored three tries when centre Izack Tago was in the sin bin for a professional foul on Brian Kelly. It was Cleary and Talagi brilliance that then saved Penrith. Talagi has been a revelation in 2025 after filling the big shoes of club legend Jarome Luai. His confidence and decision making have grown each week, and the 20-year-old's skillset and speed are top notch. Panthers winger Thomas Jenkins has enjoyed a breakout year and he leapt high above opposite number Jaylan De Groot to snaffle a pinpoint Talagi bomb to open the scoring in the 19th minute. Cleary genius with the ball in hand deceived the Titans defence to lay a pass on for fullback Dylan Edwards to score. Cleary, again, bombed away and Talagi leapt high above Brimson before streaking away under the sticks. Centre Casey McLean then rocketed 55m to score on the cusp of halftime. The fireworks then exploded after the break in what was a sensational confrontation.

Voss surprised by McRae's 'unusual' recruiting tactic
Carlton coach Michael Voss was left surprised by Craig McRae's public admission he had spoken to Jack Silvagni, saying he wouldn't have done the same thing. McRae raised eyebrows earlier this week when he revealed he had met up with out-of-contract Blues swingman Silvagni, and that he was keen to have a second date. Silvagni, the son of Stephen and grandson of Sergio, is a third generation Blues player, and a move to arch rivals Collingwood would stoke further tensions between the two clubs. McRae and Voss won three flags together at the Brisbane Lions during their playing days, adding further intrigue to the Silvagni tug-of-war. Voss says he hasn't touched base with McRae about the situation, but said even he was "surprised" when he heard his former teammate publicly talking up the prospect of recruiting unrestricted free agent Silvagni. He pointed out how much heat West Coast co-captain Oscar Allen copped earlier this season after his meeting with Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell became public. "It''s unusual for a coach to announce something like that," Voss said ahead of Sunday's clash with Fremantle in Perth. "Regardless of what Craig did, it's not something we would do. We will respect the privacy of the player. "It's not for me to announce something like that on behalf of someone, because they're the ones that have to walk back into the locker room. "We'd choose not to make that sort of announcement. "And while I didn't necessarily read all the headlines around Oscar, I believe he came under a fair bit of heat." Voss revealed Silvagni will likely miss the rest of the season with an ongoing groin injury. But he hopes the 27-year-old will stay at the Blues for years to come. "I want to be really clear - he's a very important player for us. We're certainly hoping he plays out the rest of his career with us," Voss said. "Jack's had a really important role shift this year. It's been a real win for us to see where he's gone from forward to back." Heading west 🛫 — Carlton FC (@CarltonFC) August 1, 2025 Voss defended the decision to send star forward Charlie Curnow in for season-ending knee surgery. "Well he needed it. He pulled up quite sore from last week's game," Voss said. "As the week went it wasn't settling, so we investigated it. He wasn't going to play another game, he needed effectively 4-6 weeks off. "So given the time frame of the season, the obvious thing to do was to send him in for an operation." Carlton (7-12) are well and truly out of finals contention, and the future of Voss remains up in the air despite his contract running until the end of 2026. Things at Fremantle are far rosier, with the Dockers (13-6) in the thick of the top-four hunt after winning nine of their past 10 games.
