Mavs Announce Dereck Lively Surgery and Return Timeline originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Late in the season, the Dallas Mavericks faced an unfortunate fate related to injuries. Just after an earth-shaking trade, Anthony Davis went down with a groin strain. Kyrie Irving and Daniel Gafford suffered knee injuries, and Dereck Lively II missed a handful of games with a stress fracture in his ankle.

Lively sat 38 games from January on through the end of the season with the injury.
Now, reports have surfaced that Lively has undergone surgery to clean up bone spurs in his right foot - the same as his stress fracture - as reported by ESPN's Shams Charania.
The good news is that Lively should be healthy in time for the Mavs' training camp.
The bad news is that this setback continues a concerning history for the young center since he was drafted with the No. 12 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. He played 55 games as a rookie and was limited to just 36 last year after dealing with a variety of injuries. Lively has started 71 of those 91 career games.

When he has been healthy, Lively has been one of the most promising young centers in the NBA with dynamic two-way ability. His vertical athleticism has been a huge part of Jason Kidd's offense that frequently features lobs to the basket. Defensively, the 7-footer has great instincts in protecting the hoop blocking shots.
With a healthy Lively, Davis and Gafford, the Mavericks have a loaded front court and can turn into legitimate contenders upon Irving's return sometime near the All-Star break at the earliest.
Lively has career averages of 8.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.5 blocks in 23.4 minutes per game with the Mavs.

Inter Miami opens 2025 Leagues Cup campaign against Atlas on Wednesday

The 2025 Leagues Cup kicks off Wednesday, and Inter Miami is ready to get to work. A turbulent week saw both Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba pass on their invitations to the exhibition in Austin, triggering an automatic one-game club suspension under MLS rules, which bars players from their next league match if they miss the All-Star Game without prior approval. That sidelined both stars in Saturday's 0-0 draw against FC Cincinnati. The club was reportedly 'extremely upset' by the league's 'draconian' policy. However, they managed to find a silver lining. 'They had some mandatory rest after many consecutive matches, so I think it ended up being a good thing,' Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said. 'Now, starting this new marathon of games with the Leagues Cup and more MLS matches, they feel refreshed and ready.' Both Messi and Alba were happily back on the pitch during Tuesday's training session, signaling they're ready for the next phase of a demanding summer. Inter Miami now enters the Leagues Cup — a high-stakes tournament featuring all 18 Liga MX clubs and 18 qualifying MLS teams — with plenty to play for. A CONCACAF Champions Cup automatic bid awaits the winner, and with a packed schedule ahead, Miami knows the road will be tough. 'We know this is going to be a very high-level competition,' midfielder Benjamin Cremaschi said. 'We know it will be tough; we know we will have to compete, but we'll take every opportunity to get as far as we can.' Under the tournament's revamped format, Miami will play three group-stage matches against Liga teams Atlas, Necaxa, and Pumas UNAM between Wednesday and August 7. But while it will face Mexican clubs on the pitch, Miami will compete in an MLS-only table, with only the top four MLS clubs across all groups advancing to the knockout stage. 'Tomorrow is going to be very important for us to start this tournament on the right note,' Mascherano said. Should it advance, the team will enter a single-elimination bracket, where matchups are cross-league, seeded by group-stage performance. Helping Miami's push is a major addition: midfielder Rodrigo De Paul joins on a four-year loan-to-buy deal from Atlético Madrid. A key figure on Argentina's national team alongside Messi, De Paul brings fast footwork and a well-established chemistry to the roster. '[Having De Paul] speaks to the level the club is trying to achieve,' midfielder Tadeo Allende said. 'It motivates us to play alongside someone who's won at the highest level and to learn from him.' Mascherano confirmed De Paul has yet to train with the full squad but said he's in 'great shape' and will be available as soon as paperwork clears. First up for Inter Miami: a tough test against Atlas FC on Wednesday night at 7:30. Former Atlanta United manager Gonzalo Pineda now heads Atlas, and he has beaten Miami in two of their past three meetings. Pineda knows what his team is up against, and he's not backing down. 'Inter Miami is a very mature team, and there is an aura surrounding them,' Pineda said. 'To have so many stars on one team is something else, but once the referee blows the whistle, we'll just focus on taking the ball off their feet. Cutting them off is something this team can do very well.' The atmosphere promises to be electric, with thousands of Atlas fans expected to travel from Guadalajara and across the U.S. to Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale 'Many of our fans can't make it to Mexico to see us, so we're bringing a little bit of Mexico to them here,' said Atlas captain Aldo Rocha. 'Giving them a win tomorrow would be something special — for them and for us.'

Mamba Mentality: Barcelona Stars Help Unveil Kobe Bryant-Inspired Kits

Barcelona, prepare to embrace Mamba Mentality. The reigning Spanish LaLiga champions (both men's and women's teams) have unveiled a new 2025-26 away kit that pays homage to NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his famed "Mamba Mentality" brand. The gold jersey features purple and black accents, evoking the colors of the Los Angeles Lakers, Bryant's longtime team. In place of the traditional Nike swoosh, the shirt prominently displays Bryant's "Sheath" logo in a glossy snakeskin texture. The club crest is also embossed, giving the kit a distinct textured feel. The full kit includes black shorts with snakeskin trim and gold socks bearing both the Kobe logo and the word "Barça" on the calf. Nike says the design reflects Bryant's philosophy of relentless self-improvement and excellence. The launch campaign featured Barcelona stars like Gavi, Alexia Putellas, Lamine Yamal and Salma Paralluelo performing rondo drills — a nod to discipline, teamwork and mental focus. Who Are The Top 10 Running Backs Heading Into The 2025 College Football Season?

Running back was arguably the strongest position in college football last season. Ashton Jeanty seriously threatened Barry Sanders' long-standing single-season rushing yards record. TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins teamed up to help Ohio State win a national championship. Cam Skattebo put Arizona State on his back and led the Sun Devils to the CFP behind his 1,700-yard season. All of those players are now off to the NFL, though, leaving college football without a clear-cut top player at running back, at least in the eyes of some. Penn State has a couple of running backs who can make their case for the honor, while Notre Dame has a running back who might also feel he's the top dog at the position. While we might not be as certain about who the No. 1 running back in the nation is entering 2025, the depth of talent at the position is still apparent. That's why forming a top-10 list wasn't easy, but we gave it a try. So, here are the 10 best running backs in college football ahead of the new season. 10. Bryson Washington, Baylor After redshirting in 2023, Washington had a stellar 2024 campaign. He rushed for 1,028 yards on 5.9 yards per carry. He added 217 receiving yards and a touchdown in the passing game as well, helping him earn Freshman All-American honors from multiple publications. Washington's play really took off at the end of the season, though. He rushed for at least 110 yards in each of Baylor's final four regular-season games and in five of its final six regular-season games. He scored 11 of his 12 touchdowns in that stretch. 9. Jonah Coleman, Washington The 2024 season might have been disappointing for the Huskies, but it certainly wasn't for Coleman. Following head coach Jedd Fisch from Arizona to Washington, Coleman rushed for 1,053 yards on 5.5 yards per carry and 10 touchdowns. He was productive in ranked matchups against Michigan and Indiana, putting up 184 yards over those two games. He was named third-team All-Big Ten as a result. 8. Desmond Reid, Pitt Reid made a seamless transition from the FCS to FBS in 2024, putting up better numbers at Pitt than he did in his last season at Western Carolina. The third-year running back rushed for 966 yards on 5.3 yards per carry and five touchdowns, adding an impressive 579 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns in 2024 on top of those numbers. Reid's contributions didn't end on the offensive side of the ball, either. He recorded 159 punt return yards and a punt return touchdown, earning second-team All-American honors from multiple outlets as an all-purpose player. 7. Quintrevion Wisner, Texas The Longhorns keep churning out quality running backs, with Wisner joining that lineage in 2024. He actually wasn't supposed to be Texas' starting running back entering the 2024 season, earning the job after CJ Baxter suffered a season-ending knee injury during fall camp. Wisner stepped up in Baxter's absence, recording 1,064 yards on 4.7 yards per carry to go with 311 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown. Baxter will be back in the mix for Texas in 2025, so it might be tough for Wisner to put up over 1,000 rushing yards again. But his talent was too good to leave him off the list. 6. Ahmad Hardy, Missouri For the last couple of seasons, Luther Burden III brought the offensive spark for Missouri at wide receiver. This season, Hardy might be responsible for being the Tigers' offensive catalyst. He rushed for an impressive 1,351 yards on 5.7 yards per carry and 13 touchdowns at Louisiana-Monroe last season, winning Sun Belt Freshman of the Year. Hardy was arguably the best running back in the transfer portal this offseason, with Missouri beating Ole Miss and Kentucky to land him. 5. Isaac Brown, Louisville After finishing third in the ACC in rushing yards last season, Brown is the conference's leading returning rusher for 2025. In fact, he proved to be one of the ACC's best running backs as a freshman in 2024, rushing for 1,173 yards on an impressive 7.1 yards per carry and 11 touchdowns. He rushed for at least 5.5 yards per carry in each of Louisville's three games against ranked opponents last year, putting up 151 yards in its upset win over Clemson. That helped Brown win ACC Rookie of the Year and earn second-team All-Conference honors. 4. Kaytron Allen, Penn State Allen is the first of two Nittany Lions running backs who'll appear on the list. Returning for his senior season, Allen made incremental improvements in each of his first three years in Happy Valley. He started off as an 800-yard rusher as a freshman in 2022 before rushing for 1,108 yards on five yards per carry and five touchdowns last season, and that was as he split carries with another player on our list. 3. Makhi Hughes, Oregon After losing standout Jordan James to the NFL, Oregon was able to land a quality running back to replace him for the 2025 season. Hughes transferred to Eugene after two strong seasons at Tulane, where he rushed for over 2,700 yards. Last season, Hughes rushed for 1,401 yards on 5.3 yards per carry and 15 touchdowns to be named first-team All-AAC for the second straight year. 2. Nicholas Singleton, Penn State The other half of Penn State's dynamic running back duo, Singleton is arguably the most complete running back in college football. His speed helped him rush for over 1,000 yards for the second time in his career in 2024, going for 1,099 yards on 6.4 yards and 12 touchdowns. As a receiver, Singleton had 41 receptions for 375 yards and five touchdowns. Even though Penn State has struggled in big games in recent years, Singleton has not. In the Nittany Lions' final four games of the 2024 season – the Big Ten Championship and three CFP games – he rushed for 376 yards and five touchdowns. 1. Jeremiyah Love, Notre Dame Love was Notre Dame's offensive catalyst in its surprise run to the national championship game last season. He rushed for 1,125 yards on 6.9 yards per carry and 17 touchdowns, adding two receiving touchdowns as well. While his numbers in the postseason might not look great, Love was battling injury at the time. That didn't stop him from taking a run 98 yards to the house in Notre Dame's win over Indiana. Not only is Love our top-ranked running back heading into the 2025 season, but he's also one of FOX Sports lead college football analyst Joel Klatt's top players entering the year . Klatt ranked Love as his sixth-best player in college football entering the year, saying that he "gives Notre Dame the ability to compete at the top end of the sport. "I don't think we've seen the best of Love yet," Klatt said. "He rushed for over 7.0 yards per carry [before the injury] and is a home run threat every time he touches the ball. Those types of running backs who can change the game with one touch are really special." HONORABLE MENTION Jamal Haynes, Georgia Tech Dylan Edwards, Kansas State CJ Donaldson, Ohio State Jadyn Ott, Oklahoma Jahiem White, West Virginia Darius Taylor, Minnesota Caden Durham, LSU Nate Frazier, Georgia Jadarian Price, Notre Dame Le'Veon Moss, Texas A&M Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
