Good news for ICICI bank customers as private lender reduces minimum balance requirements for...

ICICI Bank Minimum account Balance New Delhi: Facing widespread outrage, private lender ICICI Bank on Wednesday partially reversed its minimum average balance (MAB) requirements from Rs 50,000 to Rs 15,000 for new customers in Metro and urban areas. The revision came after a pushback from customers and days after the second-largest bank in the country raised the MAB requirement from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 for new customers in urban cities. The minimum balance that new ICICI Bank customers in semi-urban areas must maintain has also been reduced to Rs 7,500 from Rs 25,000. For rural locations, the MAB has been reduced to Rs 2,500 from Rs 10,000 as recommended earlier. However, the bank has clarified that if customers keep a balance less than the prescribed limit in their account, then they will have to pay a penalty. Earlier in the day, HDFC Bank followed suit by elevating MAB to Rs 25,000, effective from August 1, 2025, for new savings account holders. As per the HDFC Bank updated terms, account holders should maintain a Rs 25,000 balance. For urban and metro bank branches, the penalty is calculated as 6 per cent of the shortfall or Rs 600, whichever is lower. Major lenders like SBI, PNB, and Canara Bank have removed the minimum balance requirement for savings accounts, while also removing penalty charges for non-maintenance. Meanwhile, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra has said that the minimum balance limit for savings accounts will be decided by banks as the decision does not fall under any regulatory jurisdiction, after India's second-largest lender, ICICI Bank, raised the monthly minimum average balance requirement for all customer segments. He further said that some banks have fixed this limit at Rs 10,000, while some banks have kept this limit at Rs 2,000 for customers. However, there are many banks that have completely removed it for their customers. 'This decision does not fall under the regulatory domain,' he clarified. According to an earlier ICICI Bank's decision, customers at metro and urban locations who opened their savings accounts on or after August 1 had to maintain a Rs 50,000 monthly average balance to avoid penalties. The minimum average balance for older customers remained Rs 10,000.

ICICI Bank lowers min balance requirement to ₹15,000 from ₹50,000

In a U-turn, ICICI Bank has slashed the minimum monthly average balance (MAB) requirement to ₹15,000 from the earlier steep hike of ₹50,000, citing 'valuable feedback' from customers. The minimum balance requirement for its new savings bank accounts opened on or after August 1 was raised five times to ₹50,000. 'Following valuable feedback from our customers, we have revised these requirements to better reflect their expectations and preferences. We thank our customers for their continued trust and feedback, which help us serve them better,' ICICI Bank posted on its website. Similarly, the MAB for semi-urban and rural locations have been revised downwards to ₹7,500 and ₹2,500 respectively, it said. Before August 1, the MAB for semi-urban and rural areas was ₹5,000 and ₹2,000, respectively. Even after the rollback, the bank has effected a 50% hike across all these segments. However, the bank said, the revised MAB requirements are not applicable to salary accounts, senior citizens/pensioners (above 60 years), basic savings bank deposit accounts/PM Jandhan Yojana, and accounts for people with special needs. They are also not applicable to savings accounts opened before July 31, 2025. MAB is the minimum balance that a customer is required to maintain in a bank account. If the balance falls below the required amount, the bank levies a penalty. In case account holders fail to meet the MAB, customers will be liable to pay penal charges of 6% of the shortfall in required MAB, or ₹500, whichever is lower. The balance in the savings bank account of ICICI Bank earns an interest of 2.5% per annum, it said. The hike in MAB comes at a time when public sector banks have rationalised their penalties or completely waived them off. Led by the country's largest lender, State Bank of India (SBI), other public sector lenders like Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, and Indian Bank, too, waived off penal charges for failing to maintain the MAB in all savings accounts. Most public sector banks (PSBs) have removed their minimum balance charges in general savings bank accounts, while some have rationalised to promote financial inclusion, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in the Lok Sabha on Monday (August 13, 2025). The charges are removed/rationalised as part of their business strategy with the commercial wisdom, in view of the perceived benefits which may arise in terms of growth in deposits, among others, he had said.

Apple denies favouring ChatGPT after partnership claims, rejects Elon Musk's allegation that App Store hinders rivals

Apple has rejected allegations from Elon Musk that its App Store discriminates against competitors, insisting the platform is free and fair of bias, according to a BBC report. The remarks come after the Tesla and X chief threatened legal action, accusing Apple of making it 'impossible' for apps to rival ChatGPT-maker OpenAI in the store. Musk's criticism followed his renewed clash with OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, whom he labelled a 'liar' after Altman accused him of using X to 'benefit himself and his own companies'. The dispute marks the latest escalation in a long-running feud between the two tech leaders, who co-founded OpenAI before Musk's departure from the firm. In a statement to the BBC, Apple said: 'We feature thousands of apps through charts, algorithmic recommendations and curated lists selected by experts using objective criteria.' Apple entered into a partnership with ChatGPT in June 2024 but has denied any preferential treatment. The company noted that other AI tools, including DeepSeek and Perplexity, have reached top positions in App Store rankings since then. Musk, however, continued to criticise the company online, questioning why neither X nor its AI chatbot Grok featured in the App Store's 'Must Have' section. He pointed out that X ranked as the number one news app globally and Grok was fifth among all apps, while ChatGPT topped the UK's free app chart. Official rankings show Grok in third place and X absent from the top 40. Meanwhile, tensions between the xAI chief and Sam Altman escalated further, as the public spat unfolded against the backdrop of legal proceedings in the United States. This week, District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers allowed OpenAI's claims against Musk to proceed to trial, including accusations of a 'years-long harassment campaign' involving public remarks, social media activity, court filings, and what the company describes as a 'sham bid' for its assets. The trial is expected to intensify tensions in a rivalry that has persisted for over a decade, stemming from Musk's belief that OpenAI abandoned its original founding principles.
