Charmed by PM Modi's 'diplomatic spell', Maldives and Lankan leaders give up anti-India stance

Hans India30-07-2025
Colombo: Charmed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "diplomatic spell", Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu and Sri Lankan President Anura Dissanayake - two leaders who backed a strong anti-India policy before coming to power in their respective nations - now seem to have made a major shift in their approach towards New Delhi, the Lankan media cited on Wednesday.
The observations were made during Dissanayake's ongoing July 28-30 State Visit to the Maldives which took place almost immediately after PM Modi's landmark visit to Male, last week.
"With the end of Modi's visit to the Maldives, Sri Lanka's pro-China JVP leader, President Anura, has gone to the Maldives at the invitation of the Maldivian President. What happened to Anura, and to the JVP, is the same as what happened to the Maldivian President. They also showed a strong anti-India policy before coming to power," a report by Lankan media outlet Mawrata News stated.
Last December, Dissanayake, while visiting India on what was his first official foreign visit since assuming office, had thanked India for its "immense support" during the unprecedented economic crisis and also assured Prime Minister Modi that he will not allow the island nation to be used in any way that is detrimental to the interest of India.
On July 25, PM Modi arrived in Male on a two-day State Visit to participate in the Maldives' 60th Independence Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour.
This was Prime Minister Modi's third visit to Maldives - he had visited the Indian Ocean archipelago in 2018 and 2019, earlier - and the first by a Head of State or Government to Maldives during the Presidency of Mohamed Muizzu which began in November 2023.
In a special gesture, President Muizzu had welcomed PM Modi at the airport in Male as he arrived from the United Kingdom. Maldives Foreign Minister, Defence Minister, Finance Minister and Minister of Homeland Security were also present at the airport to welcome PM Modi.
Breaking with tradition, Muizzu had not made India his first State Visit after assuming the presidency, signalling a clear shift in his foreign policy. He also permitted the Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 3 — perceived as a surveillance ship — to dock in its waters, raising Indian concerns about potential data collection by Chinese to support submarine operations in the region.
However, Muizzu's Five-day State Visit to India in October - his second trip to the country in four months after having also attended the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Modi - highlighted a significant diplomatic shift. Muizzu, who previously backed an "India Out" campaign in the Indian Ocean archipelago, now sought to navigate the complex relations while balancing the country's ties with China.
This year already, in the first six months, New Delhi has seen nearly half a dozen ministerial level visits from the Maldives. External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar's very first engagement in 2025 was with the Foreign Minister of Maldives.
"Modi's view of Maldives was that of a younger brother who is angry with his older brother and would come back to him after the anger is over. Modi was right. Finally, the Maldivian President went to India to seek Modi's help in resolving the Maldivian economic crisis. Modi also forgot the old grudge and helped him," reported Mawrata News.

PM inaugurates flats for MPs, urges them to celebrate festivals there

Old houses for MPs were in a poor state and posed several problems, the PM said, adding that lawmakers will face no such issue in these modern flats, each with a carpet area of over 5,000 sq ft Press Trust of India New Delhi Inaugurating a complex of multi-storey flats for parliamentarians, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday suggested that the residential premises housing the MPs should celebrate India's different festivals and compete on cleanliness. Taking a swipe at his rivals, he said some people may link Kosi, the name of one of the four towers christened after different rivers, to the upcoming Bihar assembly polls but he will tell such "small-minded" people that the tradition of naming towers after rivers unites people. The new complex in Baba Kharak Singh Marg close to Parliament House comprises 184 type-VII multi-storey flats. Modi said there had long been a shortage of residences for MPs and first-time members had to struggle to get a house. However, no new residence was built for Lok Sabha MPs between 2004 and 2014, when the Congress-led UPA was in power, and his government has constructed around 350 of them, he noted. "The India of the 21st century is as sensitive as it is eager for development," he said, adding that his government built a new government secretariat, Parliament building and houses for MPs and also constructed over four crore homes for the poor, hundreds of medical colleges and provided piped water supply for households. Old houses for MPs were in a poor state and posed several problems, the prime minister said, adding that lawmakers will face no such issue in these modern flats, each with a carpet area of over 5,000 sq ft. When MPs are free of their own problems, they can use their time and energy more effectively on addressing people's problems, Modi said. These flats will also help save money as the government spent a considerable sum in maintaining old houses, he added. Noting that MPs from different states and regions will be staying in these premises, he said it will symbolise the idea of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat'. It will be a great move if festivals of different states are celebrated collectively, he said, adding that the MPs can ask their constituents to join them as well. The prime minister said MPs living on the premises should consider it their duty to ensure that the place is identified with sustainability and cleanliness. He said he will urge the ministry and the residential committee concerned if there can be a competition two to three times annually among the different premises housing MPs on cleanliness. "It should be declared (after competition) that this particular block was found cleanest. Maybe, after a year, we can also announce which is the best and which is the worst." The complex is designed to be self-sufficient and is equipped with a full range of modern amenities to address the functional needs of the members of the Parliament, according to a statement. "Incorporating green technology, the project adheres to the standards of the GRIHA 3-star rating and complies with the National Building Code (NBC) 2016. These environmentally sustainable features are expected to contribute to energy conservation, renewable energy generation, and effective waste management," it said. Each residential unit provides ample space for both residential and official functions, the statement said. The inclusion of dedicated areas for offices, staff accommodation, and a community centre will support MPs in fulfilling their responsibilities as public representatives, it said. It Aint Over Till The Fat Lady Sings: Sri Lankan MP Backs India Amid US Tariff Blitz

Amid the United States' tariff blitz against India, Sri Lankan MP Harsha de Silva has backed New Delhi, urging the ruling party not to mock but to support its neighbour. While US President Donald Trump has hiked tariffs on India to 51%, those on Sri Lanka have been revised to 30%, reducing it from the initially threatened 44%. Some ruling party leaders in Sri Lanka were praising their government for keeping the tariff low compared to India. Reacting to their remarks, Sri Lankan MP Harsha de Silva called out the ruling government for mocking India's bold stand against Trump's trade tariffs. "India, our true ally, stood by us in our toughest times. We should honor their fight, not laugh. India's courage inspires Asia," he said on X. In a video shared on X, the Sri Lankan MP said, "Let's not talk about the US tariffs here. Don't laugh at India. Don't mock them when they are down because when we were down, they were the only ones to lend us a hand. There is one thing that I want to tell you - it ain't over until the fat lady sings. We witnessed you guys laughing. Don't laugh. India expected the US tariffs to come down to 15% and we also expected the same." Sri Lankan MP Harsha de Silva was reminding his fellow MPs about India's $4B+ aid during the island nation's 2022 crisis when others didn't help. The video captures him scolding laughter amid tariff debates. US President Trump imposed 25% additional tariffs on Indian goods (totalling up to 50%) as punishment for India's Russian oil imports, which the US sees as funding Russia's Ukraine war. This sparked US-India tensions, with India pausing US arms buys. "There is a chance that Sri Lanka may receive (additional) tariffs between 15-20%," said the MP. Called out the Govt in @ParliamentLK for mocking India's bold stand against Trump's trade tariffs. #India, our true ally, stood by us in our toughest times. We should honor their fight, not laugh. India's courage inspires Asia! #StandWithIndia #SriLanka #TrumpTariffs — Harsha de Silva (@HarshadeSilvaMP) August 10, 2025 Notably, while China is the biggest importer of Russian oil, the US has maintained caution while dealing with Beijing. On the other hand, Trump has reportedly been irked after India refused to buzz down and did not open the Indian agri sector to American goods, thus inviting additional tariffs, a pressure tactic by the US to force India into a trade deal. However, the Narendra Modi government has maintained that it won't bow down to bullying by the United States.

PhDs, elite lab experience, and AI brilliance: Mark Zuckerberg's secret recruitment list for superintelligence lab revealed

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, is on an aggressive hunt for the brightest minds in artificial intelligence, personally spearheading recruitment for his new superintelligence lab. At the heart of this effort is a carefully curated document known as 'The List'—a roster of top-tier AI talent targeted for Meta's ambitious projects. According to The Wall Street Journal , most names on The List hold PhDs from elite institutions like UC Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon, with stints at leading AI hubs such as OpenAI in San Francisco and Google DeepMind in London. Typically in their 20s or 30s, these researchers share a rarefied skill set—deep expertise in calculus, linear algebra, and probability theory—paired with the ability to tackle highly complex, computation-heavy problems. Zuckerberg has been personally involved in the chase, diving into technical research papers and coordinating candidate outreach with two senior Meta executives via a group chat dubbed 'Recruiting Party.' Prospects are contacted through email, text, or WhatsApp, with priority given to those who have made significant contributions to AI breakthroughs. One recent Meta hire, passionate about algorithm design, perfectly fits this profile. The AI research world is close-knit, with scientists networking in private Slack and Discord groups to exchange offers and sometimes leverage competing bids to increase their value. Sources confirm Meta has approached dozens of OpenAI researchers, heating up Silicon Valley's AI talent war. At the helm of Zuckerberg's superintelligence initiative is 28-year-old Alexandr Wang—founder of Scale AI and son of Chinese immigrant physicists—whose $14 billion deal with Meta marks one of the costliest hires in history. In response to Meta's recruitment drive, OpenAI has revamped its pay structure, with its CTO even issuing an open letter urging staff to resist Zuckerberg's offers. At one point, the company reportedly paused operations for almost a week. Former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati also revealed that Zuckerberg offered engineers in her team multi-million-dollar packages—yet, remarkably, not a single one has accepted.
