Thug Life X review: Kamal Haasan is in the limelight because of his latest release Thug Life, which hit the screens on June 5. The biggie created a fair deal of buzz ahead of its release as it marks the seasoned actor's first collaboration with Mani Ratnam after Nayagan (1987). The powerful trailer too worked in its favour. So did Thug Life live up to expectations? Here's what netizens feel about the gangster drama.
Thug Life Twitter review
Thug Life, Kamal Haasan's first film after Indian 2, is out in theatres. The gangster drama has become the talk of the town because of its stellar cast and catchy songs. Not surprisingly, several netizens took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share their views about the big-ticket film.
A netizen said that Kamal Haasan and Simbu's scenes are a highlight of Thug Life. They also praised Trisha's performance in the film.
#ThugLife first ever review Blockbuster 👌👌. As usual maniratnam narration like CCV. Conversation between sim u and kamal in pre climax was nice. Trisha character is different and bold attempt.. finally thalaivan ARR bgm 🔥🔥Kollywood tweet rating- 7.5/10 pic.twitter.com/AsXDGKYjkQ
However, not everyone was impressed by the film. A user said that he got a 'headache' while watching the biggie
Sorry bro. I'm also a huge fan of Maniratnam sir. I travelled 40km to watch Thug Life and I got a headache while watching the movie. This is not hatred it's a pain.
Another one said that the film 'loses momentum' after a promising start.
You walk into #ThugLife hoping for a gritty gangster drama, but leave disappointed by its slow, predictable story. Despite a promising start with Kamal Haasan and STR's solid presence, the film quickly loses momentum, ending up strictly average.
Another user criticised the film's romantic portions and added that Thug Life fails to evoke any emotions.
#ThugLifeReview (2025) : KH-Trisha love portions r Dull. STR, Abirami Neat. Songs gud. Delhi landscape visuals super. Weak Story, No emotions, No twists; Unexciting & Draggy Narratin. DISAPPOINTMENT!Cinema,Politics& Family ~ FAILED!⭐️⭐️/10 #ThugLife #ThugLifeDisaster pic.twitter.com/kT6y1NxWoa
A netizen, however, disagreed with the negativity surrounding the film and praised its 'stunning visuals'.
#Thuglife :- Inside Report 🔥 🔥 First Half: PURE ADRENALINE! Mani Ratnam's genius kicks off with a BANG—stunning visuals, raw energy, and Kamal Haasan owning every frame like a BOSS. 🔥 The plot grips you tight, with slick action and dialogues that hit like bullets. Music?… pic.twitter.com/aVmnbaCWvZ
Thug Life, meanwhile, has taken a strong start at the box office and is likely to collect around Rs 45 crore in India on the first day.

Thug Life Box Office Day 2: Kamal Haasan's Film Witnesses Drop, Earns Rs 23 Crore

Last Updated: Thug Life, the Mani Ratnam-Kamal Haasan film, struggles at the box office with a 55% drop on Day 2, earning Rs 23 crore in two days. Looks like Thug Life is having a bit of a bumpy ride at the box office! The much-awaited reunion between Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan, 37 years in the making, had fans excited. But sadly, the film hasn't quite lived up to the massive hype yet. Thug Life is facing a tough battle at the box office, especially after the sharp dip it took on its second day. After a decent start on Day 1, the action-packed drama hit a speed bump on Friday, Day 2 of its release. Collections took a noticeable dip, with the film bringing in around Rs 23 crore. As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 7.50 crore across all languages on Friday, marking a steep 55 per cent drop from its Day 1 earnings of Rs 15.50 crore. With this, the film's total collection in India over two days stands at Rs 23 crore. What's adding to the pressure is the release of Housefull 5. Akshay Kumar's latest comedy dropped on the same day and matched Thug Life's two-day total, Rs 23 crore, in just one day. The clash proved especially damaging in the Hindi belt, where Thug Life was promoted heavily as a pan-India film. Unfortunately, it opened to a disappointing Rs 65 lakh in Hindi markets, and early estimates suggest that Friday's Hindi collection may be as low as Rs 25–30 lakh. With such numbers, trade analysts believe the film may find it difficult to even cross Rs 5 crore in Hindi during its theatrical run. But it's not just the Hindi version that's struggling as Thug Life isn't exactly lighting up the box office in Tamil either. The film's Rs 23 crore two-day total falls way short when compared to Kamal Haasan's previous hits. Remember Vikram? That Lokesh Kanagaraj blockbuster stormed into theatres in 2022 and raked in a massive Rs 60 crore in just two days. Even Indian 2, which didn't really impress critics or audiences last year, still managed a healthier Rs 44 crore over the same period. So yeah, Thug Life has some serious catching up to do. And to make things worse, the film didn't release in Karnataka at all, reportedly due to backlash over Kamal Haasan's controversial remark about the Kannada language. That definitely didn't help its numbers. Thug Life stars a fantastic ensemble including Trisha, Silambarasan, Joju George, Ashok Selvan, Nasser, Abhirami, and more. The music is composed by the legendary AR Rahman, with stunning visuals captured by cinematographer Ravi K Chandran. The movie's editing is handled by A Sreekar Prasad. First Published:

While many praised its impressive cinematography and visually striking presentation, others were disappointed with the predictable storyline and sluggish screenplay. Talking about its box office collection, the film witnessed a huge drop on its day 2. According to the early estimates by industry tracker it minted around Rs 7.5 crore across all languages in India. The second day saw a major drop in the numbers as the film performed decently on its first day at the box office and collected a whopping Rs 15.50 crore. This implies the film suffered a loss of more than 55 per cent. With this, the two-day box office collection of the movie stands at Rs 23 crore nett in India. Released in multiple languages, the film brought together a powerhouse cast featuring Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Joju George, Ali Fazal, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sanya Malhotra, Nassar and Rohit Saraf, among others in pivotal roles. This film marked a significant collaboration between Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan after 38 years since their iconic film Nayakan (1987). Thug Life box office collection Day 2: Kamal Haasan's film earns Rs 23 crore in two days, Housefull 5 matches it in 24 hours

Thug Life box office collection Day 2: After a lukewarm opening, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's Thug Life dropped even further on the second day of release. The highly anticipated gangster drama reeled under the impact of the massive controversy that erupted after Kamal's statement on Kannada language, which led to the film's release being stalled in Karnataka. The impact continued into the second day as the film's box office numbers dipped further. According to Sacnilk, the film started its box office journey on Thursday with Rs 15.5 crore, earning less than Kamal's last films Vikram and Indian 2, as well as Mani Ratnam's last film Ponniyin Selvan 2. It fell further on Friday, minting Rs 7.5 crore and witnessing a sharp 55 percent drop from its opening day. The film raked in Rs 23 crore in total domestic collections across the two days of its release. On Friday, Thug Life's performance was further impacted by the release of the Hindi film Housefull 5. Thug Life had been billed as a pan-India starrer. However, the Akshay Kumar-led multi-starrer — part of a proven, bankable franchise — minted Rs 23 crore on its first day of release (the amount that Thug Life earned within two days of release), leaving the Kamla Haasan-starrer high and dry in the Hindi-speaking market. Thug Life had minted Rs 65 lakh in the Hindi market on its first day of release. According to reports, the film's earning fell to Rs 25-35 lakh in the Hindi market on the second day. On Friday, the film also recorded a meagre Hindi occupancy rate of 6.48 percent. Thug Life's main market is the Tamil audience, but even in that region, the film has struggled to perform. It saw a 31.41 percent Tamil occupancy on Friday. Kamal's last blockbuster, Vikram, had minted Rs 60 crore in its first two days of release — far more than Thug Life's Rs 23 crore. Another of his previous films, Indian 2, which was panned by critics, still managed to collect Rs 44 crore in its first two days. Comparing Thug Life to Mani Ratnam's previous films paints an even bleaker picture. Mani's last film, Ponniyin Selvan – Part 2, collected Rs 50.2 crore in its first two days, whereas Part 1 had collected Rs 65.35 crore in the same timeframe. Despite its lukewarm performance, Thug Life still has a window to redeem itself over the first weekend. This will be a crucial period in determining its box office journey. Apart from Kamal, the film boasts an ensemble cast including Trisha, Silambarasan, Joju George, Ashok Selvan, Nasser, Abhirami, and others. To top it off, the film's music has been composed by AR Rahman.
