BMW Says This EV Makes 13,269 LB-FT of Torque. Here's Why That's Misleading

Yahoo25-02-2025
If you followed along with the news about the BMW Vision Driving Experience vehicle (a.k.a. the VDX) that came out last week, you may have noticed an unusual claim: that this electric car makes 13,269 pound-feet of torque. To which anyone's initial reaction should probably be, wait — is that a typo?
No, it's not. BMW writes it out in clear English in its press release for the vehicle: 'The Vision Vehicle develops 13,269 lb-ft of torque.' With that kind of power, it must be the quickest vehicle to ever grace a road, right? Well, it is quick — but that silly-high number is more a deception than a legitimate indicator for performance.
BMW doesn't spell it out, and wouldn't confirm it either way when queried, but this 13,269 pound-feet of torque is referring to wheel torque, not motor torque. The latter is the number we're all accustomed to seeing when manufacturers provide specs for vehicles. It's a disappointing omission, considering the quad-motor EV concept is undoubtedly packing a ridiculously-high amount of motor torque that shouldn't require this sort of confusing claim.
If this wheel torque conundrum sounds familiar, that's because this isn't the first time an OEM has pulled this stunt. GM revealed the GMC Hummer EV to great fanfare years ago with a stunning claim of 11,500 pound-feet of torque. In reality, the tri-motor Hummer EV Pickup makes 1200 pound-feet of motor torque. GM chose to instead report the obscure and relatively useless wheel torque spec initially, and there's no denying it made for dramatic headlines. Tesla did the same with its non-existent Roadster, which required similar explaining to dissuade the spread of misinformation.
As a reminder, wheel torque is traditional motor torque, multiplied by the effect of any gear ratio that changes that output on its way to the wheels. Jason Fenske from Engineering Explained has a great video that explains the situation from years ago when the Tesla Roadster was revealed.
Road & Track asked Fenske for his thoughts as OEMs continue to peddle this semi-meaningless spec. 'Car companies love to wow enthusiasts with big numbers, and this is often done with misleading marketing, such as providing wheel torque numbers to MAKE NUMBER BIG,' Fenske said. 'I feel the simplest way to combat this is to provide an equally factual, but equally misleading counterclaim. For example, the Ford Bronco, with a small 2.3-liter four-cylinder, is capable of producing over 29,000 lb-ft of torque at the wheels — more than double the BMW!"
The question remains then, how much motor torque does the VDX actually make? Unfortunately, BMW didn't release any information that would help determine the final drive reduction ratio is for its electric motors, but somewhere in the 7:1 to 10:1 range is typical for EVs. If it were 10:1 all around, that would put motor torque at 1369 pound-feet. That number is still wildly impressive, and even if it's a somewhat lower in reality, nobody would be disappointed in BMW for it. Let's just hope BMW's choice to report electric motor performance like this for its concept isn't an indicator of what it plans to do for production vehicles to come.

Q2 Earnings Recap: Ford (NYSE:F) Tops Automobile Manufacturing Stocks

As the Q2 earnings season comes to a close, it's time to take stock of this quarter's best and worst performers in the automobile manufacturing industry, including Ford (NYSE:F) and its peers. Much capital investment and technical know-how are needed to manufacture functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing automobiles for the mass market. Barriers to entry are therefore high, and auto manufacturers with economies of scale can boast strong economic moats. However, this doesn't insulate them from new entrants, as electric vehicles (EVs) have entered the market and are upending it. This has forced established manufacturers to not only contend with emerging EV-first competitors but also decide how much they want to invest in these disruptive technologies, which will likely cannibalize their legacy offerings. The 6 automobile manufacturing stocks we track reported a slower Q2. As a group, revenues beat analysts' consensus estimates by 1.5%. In light of this news, share prices of the companies have held steady as they are up 1.7% on average since the latest earnings results. Best Q2: Ford (NYSE:F) Established to make automobiles accessible to a broader segment of the population, Ford (NYSE:F) designs, manufactures, and sells a variety of automobiles, trucks, and electric vehicles. Ford reported revenues of $50.18 billion, up 5% year on year. This print exceeded analysts' expectations by 7.8%. Overall, it was an exceptional quarter for the company with a solid beat of analysts' sales volume estimates and an impressive beat of analysts' adjusted operating income estimates. Ford achieved the biggest analyst estimates beat of the whole group. Unsurprisingly, the stock is up 6.1% since reporting and currently trades at $11.57. Is now the time to buy Ford? Access our full analysis of the earnings results here, it's free. Winnebago (NYSE:WGO) Created to provide high-quality, affordable RVs to the post-war American family, Winnebago (NYSE:WGO) is a manufacturer of recreational vehicles, providing a range of motorhomes, travel trailers, and fifth-wheel products for outdoor and adventure lifestyles. Winnebago reported revenues of $775.1 million, down 1.4% year on year, falling short of analysts' expectations by 0.8%. The business performed better than its peers, but it was unfortunately a mixed quarter with a solid beat of analysts' adjusted operating income estimates but full-year EPS guidance missing analysts' expectations significantly. The market seems happy with the results as the stock is up 12% since reporting. It currently trades at $35.04. Is now the time to buy Winnebago? Access our full analysis of the earnings results here, it's free. Weakest Q2: Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) Originally founded by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in 2003, Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) is an electric vehicle company accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy. Tesla reported revenues of $22.5 billion, down 11.8% year on year, falling short of analysts' expectations by 1.1%. It was a disappointing quarter as it posted a miss of analysts' revenue estimates, as the miss in Energy trumped the beat in Services and in-line print for Automotive and a significant miss of analysts' operating income estimates. Tesla delivered the weakest performance against analyst estimates and slowest revenue growth in the group. As expected, the stock is down 2.3% since the results and currently trades at $325.25. Read our full analysis of Tesla's results here. General Motors (NYSE:GM) Founded in 1908 by William C. Durant, General Motors (NYSE:GM) offers a range of vehicles and automobiles through brands such as Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac. General Motors reported revenues of $47.12 billion, down 1.8% year on year. This print beat analysts' expectations by 1.3%. The stock is up 7.1% since reporting and currently trades at $57.05. Read our full, actionable report on General Motors here, it's free. Rivian (NASDAQ:RIVN) The manufacturer of Amazon's delivery trucks, Rivian (NASDAQ:RIVN) designs, manufactures, and sells electric vehicles and commercial delivery vans. Rivian reported revenues of $1.30 billion, up 12.5% year on year. This result surpassed analysts' expectations by 2%. However, it was a softer quarter as it produced full-year EBITDA guidance missing analysts' expectations significantly and a significant miss of analysts' adjusted operating income estimates. The stock is flat since reporting and currently trades at $12.17. Read our full, actionable report on Rivian here, it's free. Market Update Thanks to the Fed's series of rate hikes in 2022 and 2023, inflation has cooled significantly from its post-pandemic highs, drawing closer to the 2% goal. This disinflation has occurred without severely impacting economic growth, suggesting the success of a soft landing. The stock market thrived in 2024, spurred by recent rate cuts (0.5% in September and 0.25% in November), and a notable surge followed Donald Trump's presidential election win in November, propelling indices to historic highs. Nonetheless, the outlook for 2025 remains clouded by potential trade policy changes and corporate tax discussions, which could impact business confidence and growth. The path forward holds both optimism and caution as new policies take shape. Want to invest in winners with rock-solid fundamentals? Check out our Top 5 Growth Stocks and add them to your watchlist. Elon Musk says Tesla's new six-seat Model Y might never come to the US

Tesla just launched an extended, six-seat version of the Model Y in China. CEO Elon Musk said it might never go into production in the US due to the rise of self-driving cars. Tesla is battling fierce EV competition in China, but is going all in on robotaxis in the US. Tesla's new six-seat Model Y is creating plenty of buzz in China — but don't expect to see it in the US anytime soon. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Great Rates and Award-Winning Service Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The Insurance Savings You Expect CEO Elon Musk said on Wednesday that the Model Y L, an extended version of Tesla's most popular vehicle with three rows of seats, might never arrive on American shores. "This variant of the Model Y doesn't start production in the US until the end of next year. Might not ever, given the advent of self-driving in America," wrote Musk in a post on X. The Model Y L, which adds new features including a rear row of foldable seats and powered armrests, went on sale for $47,200 in China on Tuesday. Its launch comes as Tesla battles fierce competition from local EV players like BYD, Xiaomi, and Xpeng. Electric vehicle adoption in China is far higher than in the US, and Chinese companies have rapidly taken market share with a wave of affordable electric models packed with high-tech features, including autonomous driving and voice controls. The Model Y, China's best-selling SUV, is facing a number of new challengers. In June, smartphone giant-turned EV maker Xiaomi launched the YU7, an electric SUV priced just below the Model Y. Xiaomi says the YU7 received nearly 300,000 preorders in an hour after it launched. EV startups Xpeng and Nio have also unveiled their own Model Y rivals in recent weeks. In the US, where Chinese EVs are not available due to high tariffs, Tesla has increasingly focused on its robotaxi and ride-hailing services. The company launched its first robotaxi service, which is currently invite-only, in Austin in June. Musk has predicted that driverless vehicles will become the norm over the next decade, and told investors last October that building a regular non-robotaxi model would be "pointless." The last new product Tesla launched in the US was the Cybertruck, which has been a sales flop since it made its debut in 2023. The company has said it is planning to release an affordable model, which Musk has described as "just a Model Y," in the fourth quarter of 2025. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment, sent outside normal working hours. Elon Musk Randomly Drops In on Small Town; Reminds Everyone He is Still Canadian

British Columbia and a tiny fishing village is now atwitter after the world's wealthiest man made a random and unannounced appearance over the weekend. Elon Musk, the controversial and now apparently political CEO of Tesla and X, touched down in Bella Bella—an isolated town nestled in the Great Bear Rainforest—before departing again by helicopter. His visit to the town with approximately 1,500 residents was a surprise. Local resident Seán Carter told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that the area is no stranger to high-profile visitors. He added that Musk was possibly passing through en route to James Murdoch, son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who is a board member at Tesla, where Musk serves as CEO, and who owns a property off the coast. 'It's not every day the richest man in the world comes through town,' he said. 'That's going to be a tough one to top.' CBC News confirmed that Musk's private jet touched down in Vancouver late Friday night and departed Monday afternoon. Visual evidence viewed by the CBC reportedly aligns with flight data tracked online and show Musk arriving and departing. If you follow the lore of Musk, he was born in South Africa and is a Canadian citizen through his mother, Maye Musk, who was born in Regina, according to official biographies. Musk moved to Saskatchewan and then Vancouver as a teen, and attended college in Canada. In recent months, Musk's visits and Canadian ties have fueled debate. Earlier this year, a petition circulated calling for the government to revoke his citizenship over his role in former President Trump's White House, exactly as Musk was getting heavy handed in tariff talks between the two countries. In Ontario and Western Canada, Musk's tempestuous influence has also complicated political relationships. Quebec, B.C., and other provinces have debated decisions to exclude Tesla from EV rebate programs in response to U.S. tariffs, with Premier David Eby citing 'retaliation' as the reason. In a move that showed at least one of Musk's businesses still matters to Canadian communities, more than half of Canadian rural areas are buying services from Musk's Starlink satellite internet to improve connectivity. Musk has gone back and forth on his own complicated feelings about Canada. In 2023, he posted a photo wearing a 'I Love Canada' T-shirt and declared himself 'half-Canadian.' But in February 2025, in response to the citizenship revocation petition, he tweeted, 'Canada is not a real country' before deleting the message. Carter told the CBC politics aside, Musk's passage through Bella Bella was one for the history books. 'No matter what your opinion of him is, it's something to follow,' he said. The town's residents clearly had mixed feelings about Musk's drop-in. Emily Lowan, a candidate for the B.C. Green Party leadership, posted images of Musk's arrival on social media, writing, 'yet another reason to tax billionaires out of existence.' But in typical Canadian fashion, Carter said that Musk did not get any special treatment at the local airport and then had to walk for a bit. 'It was quite busy,' Carter said. 'The plane landed on one side, the helicopter on the other, and he had to walk a long way. He probably hoped to come in and out quietly, but there are no secrets in this town.'
