2nd phase of ‘Suthra Punjab Programme' launched
Under this initiative, Pakistan is expected to earn Rs 1 billion annually from the carbon credit of the Lakhodare waste dumping site located on the outskirts of the provincial capital; the carbon credit will be claimed under Article 6 of the Paris Accord. The Lakhodare site can produce 20 tons of biogas. The Punjab government also plans to build a recycling park on the outskirts of Lahore under this project.
In this connection, Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq chaired a meeting on Saturday to consider various options for waste recycling. Punjab Local Government Secretary Shakeel Ahmed Mian, Additional Secretary for Development Ahmer Kaifi and others attended the meeting.
On this occasion, Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) CEO Babar Sahib Din briefed the meeting on various options for waste recycling.
While addressing the meeting, the Minister said that a plan to generate energy from offal is under consideration; 1000 tonnes of energy can be generated from offal in Lahore alone. He directed the concerned officials to hold a road show in Lahore or Islamabad to promote the waste-to-energy projects, saying foreign diplomats would be invited to the road show. 'It will also be held abroad to attract investors,' he said, adding that the waste will be utilised in other cities after Lahore under this programme.
On this occasion, Punjab Secretary Local Government Shakeel Ahmed Mian directed the LWMC CEO to make a comprehensive presentation for the Chief Minister. He said that waste is being made usable all over the world because recycling is the solution to the environmental damage caused by waste.
Babar Sahib Din said that a 50 MW power plant project is also under consideration with the cooperation of the Punjab Energy Department. 'A large amount of waste is collected in Lahore every day under the Clean Punjab, and many domestic and foreign companies have shown interest in recycling waste,' he added.

LHC halts auction of long-leased shops in Jaranwala
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Monday barred authorities from going ahead with the planned auction of dozens of commercial shops in Jaranwala after tenants filed a writ petition challenging the legality of the move. Justice Malik Javaid Iqbal Wains issued a stay order, suspending the auction scheduled for July 25, 2025, and sought replies from the concerned government departments. The petition was filed by 40 shopkeepers through Advocate Chaudhry Shoaib Saleem. The petitioners, many of whom have been operating businesses at the premises since before or shortly after the creation of Pakistan, argued that the auction violated their tenancy rights and existing agreements with the municipal authorities. According to the petition, some of the shops were constructed in 2005 by the tenants themselves under a public-private partnership, while others were built by the local administration and allotted to tenants through oral and subsequently written agreements. Ch Shoaib Saleem argued that they the petitioners entered into formal tenancy agreements with the municipal corporation in December 2023, in accordance with Punjab Local Government policies and a notification issued by the Secretary of Colonies on September 30, 2019. They added that all tenants were up to date with rent payments, which included a 10% annual increase as per the agreements. Despite this, the Deputy Commissioner Faisalabad issued a public auction notice covering these shops, prompting the tenants to approach the court. The petition contended that the auction notice contravened Section 94(7) of the Punjab Local Government Act, 2022, and infringed upon the petitioners' fundamental rights under Articles 4, 10-A, 14, and 18 of the Constitution. The petitioners also pointed out that substantial security deposits, around Rs 500,000 per shop, made in 2005 were still held by the government. The court stayed the auction proceedings and adjourned the case for further hearing. The petitioners have requested the court to declare the auction notice illegal and to restrain the government from taking any coercive action against them. Respondents in the petition include the Punjab Chief Secretary, Secretary Local Government, Secretary Colonies Department, Deputy Commissioner Faisalabad, and Assistant Commissioner Jaranwala. Lahore, Pindi & Faisalabad: Punjab govt approves 4 major schemes worth Rs1.755bn
LAHORE: The Punjab government has approved four major development schemes for Lahore, Rawalpindi and Faisalabad with an estimated cost of Rs 1.755 billion. The approved projects include a 6.3-kilometre dual carriageway in Lahore from Gawala Colony, Gulshan-e-Ahbab to Kahna Flyover, aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity in the area, disclosed the Punjab Housing, Urban Development and Public Health Department on Monday. In Rawalpindi, the government has sanctioned the upgradation of a public park on Adiala Road, enhancing recreational facilities for the citizens. Moreover, Faisalabad will see two separate development projects: the first involves the construction of sewerage and roads in Chak No. 199-RB, Fakhraabad and adjoining localities; and the second is the establishment of a Project Management Unit (PMU) for the expansion of the city's water resources, addressing the growing urban needs. In this connection, Punjab Housing Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal formally issued directives to the relevant departments and district administrations for the release of funds and swift execution of the schemes. Livestock sector: Sindh, Balochistan agree to bolster cooperation
KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, in his meeting with Balochistan's Livestock Minister Sardarzada Mir Faisal Jamali, decided to exchange superior livestock breeds and to bolster cooperation in livestock development between the two provinces. The meeting, held at CM House, was attended by Sindh's Minister for Fisheries and Livestock, Muhammad Ali Malkani. As part of this collaboration, an agreement was reached to organise a cattle show in Jacobabad, where Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed his commitment to personally participate and extend an invitation to the Balochistan Chief Minister. He emphasised the importance of joint research efforts between the livestock departments of both provinces. Separately, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah met with the UAE Ambassador, Hamad Obaid Ibrahim Salem Al Zaabi to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and exploring investment opportunities, particularly in public-private partnerships. The ambassador congratulated the Chief Minister on the recent construction of Shahrah-e-Bhutto and confirmed that UAE investors would soon visit Sindh to review various projects. Both leaders also agreed to collaborate on initiatives aimed at women's empowerment, with the UAE planning projects focused on health, employment, and education for women in Sindh.
