Restaurant operator charged with abusing niece
CHUKAI: A restaurant operator was charged in the Sessions Court here today with abusing the daughter of her cousin in Binjai.
The accused, a 52-year-old woman, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Judge Wan Suhaila Mohd.
According to the charge, the woman, who had custody of the 15-year-old girl, is alleged to have neglected her, resulting in physical injuries to the teenager.
The offence was allegedly committed at 5.30 pm at a restaurant in Binjai near here, between March and May 22 this year.
She was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment for up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Noor Asyikin Hashim prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.
The court granted the accused bail of RM6,000 with one surety and fixed July 1 for the next case mention.

Retiree loses RM108,000 to phone scammers
TANGKAK: A 58-year-old retiree lost about RM108,000 of her savings after receiving a call from scammers impersonating as officers from government agencies. Tangkak OCPD Supt Roslan Mohd Talib said the woman was contacted by individuals claiming to be from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the police. 'The suspects accused her of being involved in suspicious investment and loan activities, and she started to panic. 'The suspects manipulated the victim into believing she was being audited. Out of fear, she followed the instructions given, including transferring money into an account supposedly for audit purposes,' he said here yesterday. The victim ended up making 16 transactions from her account to two bank accounts, believed to be mule accounts. 'She only realised she had been cheated after suffering losses totalling RM108,520. She lodged a police report on Sunday,' said Supt Roslan. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Supt Roslan warned the public not to fall for phone scams, particularly those involving callers posing as enforcement officers or government servants. 'We advise the public to verify suspicious calls before taking any action. Be cautious and always get the latest updates on scams through official platforms like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok pages of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department,' he said. Supt Roslan urged anyone who believes they have been scammed to immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 for early intervention to block fund transfers.

Piles of rubbish mar Seri Kembangan's image
Rubbish dumped by the side of Jalan Aman in Seri Kembangan. A long-term solution is needed to the persistent dumping of rubbish illegally in Seri Kembangan, Selangor. Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) Zone 22 councillor Tey Boon Kiat said several locations had become hotspots. 'These include Jalan SK 9, Jalan SK 2/3, Jalan Jinma 4, Jalan SK 7/3, Jalan 14/2B, Jalan SK 8/1, Jalan SK 3/5, Jalan SK 5/4, Jalan Pasar and Jalan Kuyuh. 'These piles of rubbish not only pollute the environment and become breeding grounds for pests, they also tarnish the image of the entire community. 'This has become a vicious cycle because if the rubbish is not cleared, it will pile up and the sites will continue to be dumping grounds,' he said. To address the issue, Tey suggested the city council consider installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the affected areas. 'However, there are concerns that the CCTV's blindspots could become new dumping sites,' he said, adding that those caught dumping rubbish would be issued a RM1,000 compound. Tey was speaking during a press conference after a clean-up operation with KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd at Jalan Aman in Kampung Baru Seri Kembangan. Seri Kembangan new village chief Eric Hong said the issue had persisted for years without a long-term solution. 'We have advised people repeatedly not to throw their rubbish everywhere, but nothing has changed. 'Each time KDEB clears the area, new piles of rubbish are there in just a few days or even overnight,' said Hong.

Jail for Thai man who tried to bribe two auxiliary cops in Singapore when caught urinating in public
Thai national Nanjaijumpa Kham-Ai was sentenced to 10 days' jail after he pleaded guilty to one count of offering corrupt gratification. -- ST PHOTO: KELVIN CHNG SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/ANN): A foreigner who urinated in a drain tried to evade a fine by attempting to bribe two auxiliary police officers who caught him in the act in December 2024. But by offering the S$7 bribe to the pair – who rejected it – Nanjaijumpa Kham-Ai, 54, landed himself in jail instead. On June 2, the Thai national was sentenced to 10 days' jail after he pleaded guilty to one count of offering corrupt gratification. A similar charge was taken into consideration for his sentencing. The court heard that Nanjaijumpa has worked in Singapore since 2017. The incident happened at about 7pm on Dec 17, 2024. Nanjaijumpa was employed as a farm worker in Lorong Semangka in Sungei Tengah, a district near Choa Chu Kang. On that day, he had just ended work and cycled to a place near Sungei Tengah Lodge. He parked his bicycle near a shop, where he sought repairs for his malfunctioning cellphone. Upon realising he did not have enough cash for payment, he decided to cycle back to the farm to get money. Before he got back on his bicycle, he urinated into a nearby drain. Two auxiliary police officers employed by Certis Cisco and deployed to the National Environment Agency, Ong Seng Hock and Prabakar Hisparan, were on patrol nearby and saw Nanjaijumpa's act. They approached him and told him he had committed an offence. Subsequently, they asked for his identification in order to prepare a printed summons requiring him to pay a fine. Deputy Public Prosecutor Tung Shou Pin said: '(Nanjaijumpa) was in a rush to collect the money and pay for his phone repairs before the shop closed, and wanted the (officers) to let him go quickly.' Nanjaijumpa told Ong that it was 'common for people to urinate there', and asked the latter to 'let the matter go' in Hokkien, DPP Tung added. Prabakar similarly rejected the bribe when Nanjaijumpa repeated the same offer to him. Seeing that both men refused the cash, Nanjaijumpa put it directly into Prabakar's sling bag. Ong immediately asked Nanjaijumpa to take the money back, explaining that they were public servants and could not accept bribes. Prabakar called the police and Nanjaijumpa was arrested. DPP Tung said there would be considerable damage to Singapore's reputation if the officers had accepted the gratification. Nanjaijumpa, who did not have a lawyer, apologised to the court during his mitigation. He said via a Thai interpreter: 'I promise not to do it again.'
