'Not empty claims, he has unearthed vote theft': Aaditya Thackeray backs Rahul Gandhi's allegations on ECI

Economic Times13 hours ago
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Saturday backed Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's recent allegations of large-scale "vote theft" during elections, asserting that the Election Commission is being "operated through the BJP office". "We had been saying this for a long time now that vote theft has indeed happened across the country, and that EC is operated through the BJP office. What Rahul Gandhi has shown are not empty claims. He has unearthed 'vote theft'..." Thackeray told the media. He urged the Election Commission to engage in an open debate with Gandhi instead of issuing rebuttals."I think instead of challenging, EC should debate with Rahul Gandhi...The information we have gathered is from their website itself. So, is their website and records incorrect?" he asked further.
Earlier today, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)-SCP chief Sharad Pawar said two people had approached him ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024, claiming they could guarantee 160 out of 288 seats.
Speaking to the media, Pawar said that he arranged a meeting of these people with Rahul Gandhi, but ultimately both of them decided to turn down the offer, saying, "This is not our path." "I remember that before the Maharashtra Assembly elections were announced, two people came to meet me in Delhi...They told me that out of 288 seats in Maharashtra, we guarantee you 160 seats. I was surprised, to be honest, I had no doubts about the Election Commission," Pawar said here. "After that, I arranged a meeting with those people and Rahul Gandhi. Whatever they wanted to say, they said in front of Rahul Gandhi. But Rahul Gandhi and I were of the opinion that we should not pay attention to this; this is not our path," he added.
The allegations, raised nine months after the Assembly elections results were announced, come amid Congress MP Rahul Gandhi alleging "vote chori" (vote theft) across the country, with the Election Commission of India (ECI) 'colluding' with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The Congress leader has also specifically raised concerns over the alleged addition of lakhs of voters in Maharashtra just months before the state polls in 2024, alleging the votes helped the Mahayuti coalition come into power. At a press conference on August 7, Rahul Gandhi claimed that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were "choreographed" by the EC to benefit the BJP, which he said appeared "immune to anti-incumbency." Citing internal analysis, Gandhi said the Congress expected to win 16 seats in Karnataka but ended up with only nine. He said the Congress investigated seven unexpected losses, zeroing in on Mahadevapura, where he alleged vote theft involving 1,00,250 votes.

Not required by law to provide list of people not included in draft electoral roll, EC says in response to ADR plea

The Election Commission on Saturday informed the Supreme Court that it was not required by law to publish a list of electors whose names have been removed from the electoral rolls of Bihar, opposing a petitioner's plea for it to release the names and details of the 65 lakh electors who did not make it to the draft published on August 1. In its reply to the Association for Democratic Reforms' application, the EC said the draft roll had been published on the basis of the enumeration forms received and that 'no inquiry' had been done at this stage. ADR had on August 5 filed an application seeking directions to EC to publish not just the names, but the reasons for deleting 65 lakh electors at the draft stage. Under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of rolls in Bihar, which ADR and others have challenged in the court, the EC announced that out of 7.89 crore electors, 7.24 crore had made it to be draft roll, with the remaining found to be dead, permanently migrated, enrolled in multiple places or untraceable. In its reply filed late Saturday night, the commission cited the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, which say that a copy of the draft roll is to be made available for inspection outside the Electoral Registration Officer's office and the ERO is required to make each part of the draft accessible to the public in the respective areas, and give two copies to each recognised party. 'That it is an admitted position that the Respondent has complied with the aforestated obligations. It is submitted that the statutory framework does not require the Respondent to prepare or share any separate list of names of people not included in the draft electoral rolls, or publish the reasons for non-inclusion of anyone in the draft electoral rolls for any reason,' the EC said. It added that neither the law nor the guidelines provide for preparation or sharing of any such lists. '…no such list can be sought by the petition as a matter of right. This position is in harmony with the scheme of the Rules, Statute and the guidelines for the following reasons: flrstly, that no inquiry is done for the inclusion of anyone's name in the draft rolls, and each and every individual whose, Enumeration Form, has been received, has been included in the draft rolls, without any reservation or exception,' the EC said. It added that those whose names have not been included in the draft roll, can submit a Form 6, which is the EC's form for registration of new electors, by September 1. 'It is implicit in the filing of Form 6 along with the Declaration by an individual, whose name was not included in the draft roll for non-submission of Enumeration Form, that he/she claims to be neither deceased, nor permanently shifted, nor untraceable,' the EC said. Congress launches campaign urging people to 'register' against 'vote chori'

Upping the ante over Rahul Gandhi's poll rigging claims, the Congress has launched a web page where people can register to demand accountability from the Election Commission of India against what it called "vote chori" and express support for his demand for digital voter rolls. Anyone can click on the portal link and download "vote chori proof, demand EC accountability and report vote chori". It also carries Mr. Gandhi's video in which he reiterated his explosive claims of a "huge criminal fraud" in the polls through collusion between the BJP and the ECI. He had cited an analysis in a constituency in Karnataka, and said it was "a crime against the Constitution". The portal also carries a message which states that the vote is the foundation of our democracy but it's under "systematic attack by the BJP, with the Election Commission complicit". "In just one assembly segment of Bangalore Central, we found over 1 lakh fake voters that helped the BJP win this Lok Sabha seat. Imagine this happening in 70-100 seats - it would destroy free elections," it says. "The Congress and INDIA have raised alarms before, including in Maharashtra. Now we have proof. We will fight this vote chori with all our strength. Join us to defend our democracy," the message on the portal reads. Once a person registers on the portal, a certificate is issued in his name, which states that he stands against "vote chori". "I support Rahul Gandhi's demand of digital voter rolls from the ECI," the certificate says. The portal also gives the option to the people of calling on a number and filling the link in the SMS to register. The certificate bears the signatures of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal and treasurer Ajay Maken. Several Congress leaders and supporters had registered on the portal and shared the certificates on social media. With Congress leaders amplifying the "vote theft" allegation of Rahul Gandhi, Election Commission of India officials on Saturday (August 9, 2025) once again pressed the Leader of the Opposition to either sign a declaration to support his claims or apologise to the country for making "fake" charges. A day after Gandhi and the ECI exchanged barbs over alleged vote theft in at least three states, poll authority officials again insisted for a signed declaration by the Congress leader to substantiate his claims.
