Amid Continued Israeli Raids… Knesset to Vote on West Bank Annexation - Jordan News

Jordan News23-07-2025
A 14-year-old Palestinian boy, Ibrahim Nasser, was killed and another injured after Israeli occupation forces opened fire on them in the town of Qabatiya, south of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank, according to medical sources reported by Al Jazeera. اضافة اعلان His killing on Tuesday evening came amid an ongoing military escalation, with Israeli forces continuing widespread raids across cities and towns in the West Bank. Early Wednesday morning, occupation forces raided Nablus and Tulkarm, along with surrounding villages. In Nablus, they imposed a siege on Rafidia Hospital, blocking the emergency department entrance and inspecting ambulances. The raids also extended to towns in Jenin, Bethlehem, and Hebron. Knesset Vote on Annexation In the midst of this military escalation, the Israeli Knesset is scheduled to vote on Wednesday on a draft resolution supporting the imposition of so-called 'Israeli sovereignty' over the West Bank—a move that would effectively begin the annexation process and constitutes a blatant challenge to international law and UN resolutions. According to Israel's Channel 12, the proposal was introduced by members of the ruling coalition before the Knesset's recess. It has garnered open support from senior ministers, including Energy Minister Eli Cohen, who declared: 'The time has come for sovereignty over the West Bank.' Sovereignty over the West Bank This political move mirrors the escalating field operations and coincides with a conference held Monday at the Knesset in West Jerusalem, attended by several right-wing ministers and lawmakers, particularly from the ruling Likud party, and former U.S. ambassador to Israel David Friedman. Israeli Justice Minister Yariv Levin said during the conference: 'Israel is facing a historic opportunity that must not be missed—to apply full sovereignty over Judea and Samaria,' referring to the West Bank using its biblical terminology. He added: 'We need swift action and must not surrender. Sovereignty should extend to all settlements.' Energy Minister Eli Cohen echoed similar rhetoric, saying: 'There will be only one state between the Mediterranean and the Jordan River—Israel. Sovereignty over the West Bank is a security necessity before being a political choice,' according to his claim. Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana, who opened the conference, recalled that the Knesset had previously passed a resolution with 68 votes opposing the establishment of a Palestinian state, asserting that the West Bank represents 'Israel's front line of defense.' Knesset member Avichai Boaron, one of the proposal's supporters, argued that over 500,000 settlers currently live under what he described as "Jordanian law" and should be brought under Israeli law 'for the safety of Israel and its children.' Former U.S. Ambassador David Friedman also voiced support for the move, expressing regret that Israel had not pursued annexation during his tenure, calling sovereignty over the West Bank 'not a whim but a shared interest.' Escalation on All Fronts This latest step follows a steady increase in official calls for annexation, including a letter sent on July 2 by 14 Likud ministers and Knesset Speaker Ohana to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging him to immediately approve annexation of the West Bank. Such a move would represent a violation of international law and UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, which call for ending the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967, including the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Since the war on Gaza began on October 7, 2023, the Israeli military and settlers have intensified attacks in the West Bank, resulting in the killing of over 1,000 Palestinians and the injury of approximately 7,000 others, according to Palestinian data.

Finland considers recognizing Palestine ahead of UN General Assembly

Finland's President Alexander Stubb has expressed willingness to approve recognition of a Palestinian state should the government submit such a proposal. His statement comes as several countries, including France and Canada, prepare to officially recognize Palestine alongside the upcoming 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September. In a message posted on X on Friday, Stubb highlighted that 'the decisions by France, the United Kingdom and Canada reinforce the trend towards recognising Palestine as part of efforts to breathe new life into the peace process.' Annoin tänään haastattelun STT:lle. Sekä israelilaiset että palestiinalaiset ovat kärsineet liikaa, liian kauan. Väkivallan uhka Israelissa on todellinen. Hamas, monet muut terroristijärjestöt ja useat valtiot eivät edelleenkään hyväksy Israelin olemassaoloa. Samalla tilanne… — Alexander Stubb (@alexstubb) July 31, 2025 Although Finland's president holds limited executive power, he plays a key role in shaping the country's foreign policy in collaboration with the government. Stubb emphasized his readiness, saying, 'If I receive a proposal to recognise the Palestinian state, I am prepared to approve it.' He also condemned the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza as 'inhumane.' Acknowledging the diversity of opinions within Finland, Stubb called for an 'open' and 'honest' debate on the issue, noting that there are concerns and differing views among Finns regarding Palestinian recognition. The far-right Finns Party and the Christian Democrats have voiced opposition to the move. Meanwhile, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo reaffirmed Finland's support for a two-state solution but did not clarify whether the government intends to formally recognize Palestine at this time.

Hamas accuses Trump of backing 'Israel's' starvation campaign in Gaza

Hamas official Izzat al-Rishq issued a scathing statement on Friday, condemning US President Donald Trump for echoing 'Israeli' accusations that the group is stealing and selling humanitarian aid intended for civilians in Gaza. 'Trump never tires of repeating Israeli accusations and lies — and we will never tire of rejecting and refuting them,' Rishq declared, denouncing the president's claims as baseless and misleading. Rishq insisted that allegations of aid theft by Hamas have been repeatedly disproven, citing findings from international bodies, including the United Nations. He also referenced a recent internal investigation by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which found no evidence that Hamas was intercepting or diverting humanitarian supplies. 'These allegations absolve the criminal and place blame on the victim,' he said, accusing Trump of spreading misinformation to shield 'Israel' from responsibility for what he described as 'systematic starvation and genocide' in the Gaza Strip. According to Rishq, the crisis in Gaza is a result of 'Israeli' policies backed by Washington, including the use of food and medicine as tools of war against more than two million people under siege. He urged the US administration to 'stop viewing the situation through Israeli eyes' and to assume what he described as its moral and legal responsibilities. Rishq called on Washington to denounce the blockade, stop shielding 'Israel' diplomatically, and support the unconditional entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. He also rejected the use of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) as a distribution channel, claiming it is being used as a trap for those in desperate need. 'Aid must be distributed through the United Nations,' he emphasized.

"They eat what we eat": Hamas shows 'Israeli' captive's health decline in new footage

Hamas released a new video on Friday featuring Evyatar David, an 'Israeli' captive who turned 24 while in captivity, appearing visibly frail inside a narrow concrete tunnel. The video, intended as a message to the Israeli Occupation government, draws a stark comparison between David's deteriorating condition and the suffering of children in Gaza, showing haunting images of bone-thin, malnourished Palestinian children. The footage portrays David sitting silently in what appears to be a dimly lit underground corridor, his face thin and body emaciated, signaling severe health decline. The video then cuts to scenes of Gaza's humanitarian crisis, severely undernourished children with sunken eyes and protruding ribs, a visual juxtaposition aimed at underscoring the shared cost of the ongoing war. Alongside the images, Hamas included statements holding the Israeli Occupation government directly responsible for the condition of its captives. One message in the video reads, 'He hoped to be released by a deal. The occupation government has decided to starve them. They eat what we eat, they drink what we drink.' The video also features clips of 'Israeli' officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, suggesting that the leadership's refusal to agree to a prisoner exchange deal is contributing to the worsening conditions of captives held in Gaza. Hamas claims that 'Israeli' captives, like the people of Gaza, are now suffering from hunger and medical neglect due to the collapse of supply lines and the 'Israeli' government's ongoing military policies. By stating, 'they eat what we eat,' Hamas is signaling that captives are surviving on the same minimal rations as Gaza residents amid the blockade and destruction.
