Perikatan seeking unified alliance, says Muhyiddin

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional is aiming to build an alliance of non-government-aligned parties that strives to adopt a unified stance on issues affecting the people and nation, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
As part of this effort, the Perikatan chairman said he met with top leaders of 11 parties on July 18 to discuss and gain feedback for this initiative.
'The establishment of this cross-party alliance aims to strengthen the role of checks and balances for the opposition parties both within and outside Parliament.
'All attendees provided very positive feedback on this proposal.
'God willing, I will bring the views expressed during this meeting to the upcoming Perikatan Nasional supreme council meeting,' Muhyiddin said in a Facebook post.
Among those present were Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau, Malaysian Indian People's Party president Punithan Paramsiven, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, and Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra) president Datuk Ibrahim Ali.
Other attendees were Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) deputy chairman S. Arutchelvan, Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) acting president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz, People's Progressive Party youth chief Sathiah Sudakaran, Barisan Jemaah Islamiah Se-Malaysia (Berjasa) president Zamani Ibrahim, United for the Rights of Malaysians Party (Urimai) president Dr. P. Ramasamy and Malaysian Advancement Party president P. Waytha Moorthy.
PAS was not present at the meeting but its top leaders, including deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and vice-president Datuk Idris Ahmad, said they were aware of the event.
When contacted, Idris said the PAS leaders could not attend the meeting because party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and other leaders were still in Kedah on Friday.
'We are in the know (about the meeting), but we were all still in Kedah after the Himpunan Mandat Negarawan rally on Thursday night,' said Idris.
Tuan Ibrahim said Muhyiddin is expected to brief Perikatan on what transpired during the meeting.
'There is no difference in opinion between us and Bersatu. Muhyiddin is the Perikatan chairman, and he will present what transpired during the meeting with the non-government bloc for all of us in Perikatan to decide on.
'Although the meeting was not discussed earlier in the Perikatan meeting, we know that the topic will be raised in the next meeting,' Tuan Ibrahim said when contacted.
In a statement the day after the meeting, Arutchelvam of PSM said that the party has decided not to join Perikatan or any new alliance.
'Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin presented several proposals, including a cross-party understanding among opposition parties.
'PSM welcomed the discussions and shared our views and position,' said Arutchelvam.
He added that PSM is currently pacting only with Muda and Parti Rakyat Malaysia.

Puad denies Umno-PN backdoor talks

Puad Zarkashi said he would have been the first to object to a proposal for Umno to forge a new government with PN. PETALING JAYA : Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi has rubbished claims that party representatives have been meeting with Perikatan Nasional leaders for talks on forming a new government. He claimed that it was PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man who initiated contact with Umno intermediaries and allegedly offered the party the prime minister's post if it agreed to a plan for a backdoor government. 'But that idea was never brought to or discussed in the Supreme Council. Even if it had been, I would have been the first to speak up and strongly oppose it,' he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian. His remarks were in response to Tuan Ibrahim's statement that Umno leaders had held discreet meetings with PN leaders to explore 'cross-party movement' led by PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin. Speaking to the media at the Selangor PAS Youth muktamar yesterday, Tuan Ibrahim also reportedly invited dissatisfied Umno members to join PN, likening it to 'leaving a sinking ship'. Puad dismissed the overture and said Umno would not repeat what he described as a mistake of the past. 'Tuan Ibrahim knows full well that Umno will not fall into the same trap again. All of this is just an attempt to lure us in,' he said. 'The idea of Umno working with PAS, let alone Bersatu, is nothing but a dream.' The last time Umno, Bersatu and PAS cooperated was when they formed the government in March 2020 following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan administration.

National Audit Dept recovers over RM150mil from 2024 to June

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of RM157.73mil has been recovered by the National Audit Department through audits done between 2024 and June this year, says Auditor-General Datuk Seri Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi. She said that the amount was collected through penalty claims, outstanding rent, the collection of Liquidated Ascertained Damages (LAD), overdue land leases, and the collection of duties and taxes. 'The amendments on the Audit Act 1957 (Act 62) also empower the Auditor-General to audit other bodies, including registered companies that receive financial guarantees from the government. '(This is) to track public funds through the new approach of 'Follow The Public Money Audit', issue any guidelines if necessary and provide any recommendations in addressing serious misconduct to prevent the misuse of public funds,' she said in a statement on Monday (July 21). She has also revealed that a total of 1,856 gazetted government companies have been audited through the eSelfAudit system. Wan Suraya also said that five audits have been conducted involving seven ministries, with the total costs of audited programmes and projects reaching RM48.873bil. 'The scope of the audit encompasses programmes, activities or projects that were implemented within the 11th and 12th Malaysia Plan,' she said. The audits, she said, had found irregularities involving several agencies such as Felcra, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Armed Forces. For Felcra, it was revealed that there were weaknesses in governance in the procurement implementation of leasing one palm oil plantation in Sandakan, Sabah, and three palm oil plantations in Gua Musang, Kelantan involved procurements totalling RM241.76mil in the period from 2022 to 2024. Meanwhile, the audits on the procurement and services at UKM found irregularities in tender and procurement processes involving RM58.45mil. 'This happened when the tender procurement committee had chosen companies that were not recommended by the technical evaluation committee, financial evaluation committee and pre-tender committee,' said Wan Suraya. She added that there were also weaknesses in the contract administration and procurement management under the armed vehicles management by the Armed Forces, which saw a total of RM162.75mil fail to be collected. Fines on the company causing the delay in maintenance, repair and supply of spare parts, worth RM1.42mil. 'In addition, it was found that the procurement of maintenance services, repairs, and the supply of spare parts for armoured vehicles totalling RM107.54 million was carried out in small fragmented parts,' said Wan Suraya.
