Cheaper, closer, long overdue: PSM moots RM1m bounty for Beng Hock's case
Rather than dangling RM10 million to hunt down a transnational fugitive, the government could begin closer to home and at just a tenth of the cost, suggested PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan. He mooted offering a RM1 million bounty for information regarding those responsible for the death of former DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock, whose family has been denied closure for 16 years.

PSM, Muda keep distance from Muhyiddin's opposition Bloc as PAS cites busy schedules
MUDA and the Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) have denied joining Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's proposed united opposition bloc, potentially undermining the former Prime Minister's latest effort to bolster his position within PN. Meanwhile, PAS explained that its leaders were occupied with other commitments, giving the impression that an opposition leader's major effort to rally parties was not a priority for them. PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man explained that party leaders could not attend the meeting due to prior commitments in Kedah following Thursday's 'Himpunan Mandat Negarawan' rally. Muda stated it is open to cooperating with any party sharing its principles while PSM clarified it did not assent to joining PN. 'If we talk about differences, every party present has significant differences. But I think there are a few fundamental issues that we are all concerned about. 'These include the rising cost of living affecting the people, the increasing abuse of power, and the reform promises that remain unfulfilled,' Muda's Acting President, Amira Aisya Abd Aziz said in a statement on Saturday. Nevertheless, she stressed that the opposition must remain strong and principled to hold the government accountable. Muda currently has political understandings with PSM and a cooperation agreement under URA with Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang). PSM deputy chairman S. Arutchelvan said his party attended the meeting as part of its policy to engage with any political group but has not decided to join PN or any new coalition. Any coalition decision must be approved by PSM's Congress. On Friday, Muhyiddin held a meeting with 11 opposition party leaders to discuss the proposal to form a cross-party alliance. Muhyiddin, who is also President of Bersatu, said the discussion aimed to gather views and preliminary agreement on establishing a political coalition involving various opposition parties to strengthen the voice of checks and balances both inside and outside Parliament. —July 20, 2025 Main image: The Diplomat

Perikatan seeking unified alliance, says Muhyiddin
PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional is aiming to build an alliance of non-government-aligned parties that strives to adopt a unified stance on issues affecting the people and nation, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. As part of this effort, the Perikatan chairman said he met with top leaders of 11 parties on July 18 to discuss and gain feedback for this initiative. 'The establishment of this cross-party alliance aims to strengthen the role of checks and balances for the opposition parties both within and outside Parliament. 'All attendees provided very positive feedback on this proposal. 'God willing, I will bring the views expressed during this meeting to the upcoming Perikatan Nasional supreme council meeting,' Muhyiddin said in a Facebook post. Among those present were Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau, Malaysian Indian People's Party president Punithan Paramsiven, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, and Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra) president Datuk Ibrahim Ali. Other attendees were Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) deputy chairman S. Arutchelvan, Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) acting president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz, People's Progressive Party youth chief Sathiah Sudakaran, Barisan Jemaah Islamiah Se-Malaysia (Berjasa) president Zamani Ibrahim, United for the Rights of Malaysians Party (Urimai) president Dr. P. Ramasamy and Malaysian Advancement Party president P. Waytha Moorthy. PAS was not present at the meeting but its top leaders, including deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and vice-president Datuk Idris Ahmad, said they were aware of the event. When contacted, Idris said the PAS leaders could not attend the meeting because party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and other leaders were still in Kedah on Friday. 'We are in the know (about the meeting), but we were all still in Kedah after the Himpunan Mandat Negarawan rally on Thursday night,' said Idris. Tuan Ibrahim said Muhyiddin is expected to brief Perikatan on what transpired during the meeting. 'There is no difference in opinion between us and Bersatu. Muhyiddin is the Perikatan chairman, and he will present what transpired during the meeting with the non-government bloc for all of us in Perikatan to decide on. 'Although the meeting was not discussed earlier in the Perikatan meeting, we know that the topic will be raised in the next meeting,' Tuan Ibrahim said when contacted. In a statement the day after the meeting, Arutchelvam of PSM said that the party has decided not to join Perikatan or any new alliance. 'Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin presented several proposals, including a cross-party understanding among opposition parties. 'PSM welcomed the discussions and shared our views and position,' said Arutchelvam. He added that PSM is currently pacting only with Muda and Parti Rakyat Malaysia.

No decision to join proposed United Opposition Front yet, says Muda
Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz said Muda is open to working with any party that shares the same ideals, as reflected in its cooperation with PSM and Pejuang. PETALING JAYA : Youth party Muda has yet to decide whether to join Bersatu's proposed United Opposition Front, following a meeting yesterday between leaders of parties outside the government bloc and Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin to discuss the idea. Acting Muda president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz said her party believes that the opposition must be firm, principled, and strong in holding the government accountable for the responsibilities entrusted to it. She said Muda is open to working with any party that shares its commitment to the same policies and principles, as reflected in its cooperation with Parti Sosialis Malaysia and Pejuang. 'However, no formal decision has been made regarding any political cooperation at this stage. All discussions on political alliances will be made collectively by Muda's leadership,' she said in a statement. Amira, who attended last night's meeting, said the participants shared a few core issues they each deeply care about, including the rising cost of living, the alleged growing abuse of power, and unfulfilled promises of reform. The other attendees included Urimai chairman P Ramasamy, Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir, Putra president Ibrahim Ali, Parti Sosialis Malaysia deputy chairman S Arutchelvan, and Malaysian Advancement Party president P Waytha Moorthy. Earlier today, Ramasamy expressed his support for the Bersatu proposal, saying such a bloc could serve to consolidate the strength of the opposition, especially among Chinese and Indian voters, in anticipation of a more profound electoral shift in the next general election. Arutchelvan said no decision had been made for PSM to join the proposed grouping. He said any decision to join a new coalition could only be made by the party's congress. At its Supreme Council meeting on Tuesday, Bersatu authorised Muhyiddin to spearhead efforts to build ties with parties outside the government bloc to form a united opposition front. The party's secretary-general, Azmin Ali, said the initiative would entail discussions aimed at forging a unified position on issues concerning the rakyat's interests. Following last night's meeting, Muhyiddin said he would raise the views of the party leaders at the next PN Supreme Council meeting.
