Cheaper, closer, long overdue: PSM moots RM1m bounty for Beng Hock's case

Malaysiakini20-07-2025
Rather than dangling RM10 million to hunt down a transnational fugitive, the government could begin closer to home and at just a tenth of the cost, suggested PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan.
He mooted offering a RM1 million bounty for information regarding those responsible for the death of former DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock, whose family has been denied closure for 16 years.

Mention dates fixed for BCS Aviation, director charged with unlicensed ground-handling refuelling operations

KUCHING (July 28): The Sessions Court here today fixed Dec 3 to 4, 2025 and Feb 9 to 13 next year for further mention of the case involving BCS Aviation (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd and its director Dato Sri Robert Song Tung Wei, who are facing 60 charges related to conducting refuelling operations without a Ground Handling Licence (GHL). Judge Iris Awen Jon fixed the dates after defence counsel Samuel Bong Xuan En requested an extension of his client's bail, which was granted. Bong also informed the court that his legal firm Suhaili & Bong Advocates, as well as Chan Khoon Moh Advocates represented by Datuk Azrin Ahmat, had not been listed as counsels on the cause list. 'As such, we are currently unable to access the case files in the court's file system and humbly request that access be granted,' he said. Last December, the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) in a statement said BCS Aviation was charged with committing 30 offences under Section 37(1) of the Mavcom Act 2015, while Song faced the same 30 charges under the same Section read together with Section 92(2)(b) of the same Act. The offences were allegedly committed at the North Pan Hangar of Kuching International Airport between July 29 and Aug 18, 2019. Conviction carries a fine not exceeding RM1 million or imprisonment for up to three years, or both. Under the law, a valid GHL issued by Mavcom is required by any party wishing to carry out ground-handling services in Malaysia, including aircraft refuelling activities. Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff appeared for the prosecution.

Missing 14-Year-Old Girl Found Safe After 4-Day Search

Subscribe to our FREE A 14-year-old Malaysian Chinese girl who went missing for over four days after allegedly running away with a middle-aged man she met through online gaming has been found safe by police. Wong Yik Xuan was successfully located by Johor police at 5 PM today in Batu Pahat, according to her father, who received the call from authorities at 8 PM this evening. The girl's father, who works in Singapore, expressed relief after receiving the news from Johor police. 'The police called me at 8 pm tonight to inform me that my daughter has been found in Batu Pahat at 5 pm today,' the father said to the press on Sunday (27 July). However, details about the circumstances of her discovery remain unclear. When asked whether his daughter was found with the 47-year-old man she had been communicating with online, the father said the family is still awaiting more information. We don't know the full details yet. We need to meet with my daughter and the police before we can understand the complete situation. The Disappearance That Sparked Concern Wong had vanished last Wednesday (23 July) after her grandfather dropped her off at a secondary school in Kepong. When she failed to return home by the 1 PM dismissal time, the family discovered she had never attended school that day. The case had raised serious concerns about online predatory behavior, as the family suspected Wong was with a 47-year-old man she had met through gaming platforms. Before her disappearance, the situation had been escalating: Wong was frequently returning home after midnight with suspicious marks Family members had witnessed her getting into vehicles with the older man The suspect had made elaborate promises including transferring car ownership and buying property Police reports had been filed two weeks prior due to concerning behavior Background Investigation Revealed Red Flags Family investigations into the 47-year-old suspect had uncovered troubling details: He had sold his house in Batu Pahat, Johor Neighbors reported he owed money to loan sharks He allegedly defrauded a local woman of over RM10,000 just two months earlier His promises of wealth appeared to be fabricated The father had specially returned from Singapore to handle the crisis after his daughter went missing. Since his wife passed away last year, he had been working overseas while his parents cared for his two children. My daughter and the online friend seemed to have vanished like they disappeared from the world. We couldn't contact them at all. I was very worried about what had happened to my daughter. While the immediate crisis has been resolved with Wong's safe recovery, the family awaits a full briefing from police about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and discovery. The family had previously appealed for public assistance, and this case is a reminder for parents to monitor their children's online activities and relationships. Teen brothers charged with abduction, assault of lorry driver

SHAH ALAM: Two brothers were jointly charged at the magistrate's court today with two charges of abducting and voluntarily causing hurt to a lorry driver, allegedly over a monetary dispute last week. V. Kirtik Ram, 19, and V. Theshvinram, 18, pleaded not guilty after the two joint charges were read out to them before magistrate Mohamad Redza Azhar Rezali. Kirtik, a lorry attendant, and Theshvinram, a p-hailing rider, both wearing face masks, stood side by side near the dock during proceedings and nodded to show they understood the charges. They claimed trial to the charges of kidnapping with the intent to secretly and wrongfully confine someone and causing injuries on Muhamad Azwar Danish Rosmadi, 21. The alleged incident occurred at 6.38pm in Jalan Persiaran Puchong Permai, Puchong, on July 22. The charges under Section 365 and Section 323 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code carry a maximum jail term of seven years and a fine, as well as a jail term of up to one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Akhilah Rosmi urged the court to set bail of RM8,000 for each charge. Defence lawyer Noor Farazidah asked the court to set a minimal bail. She said the brothers are taking care of their 64-year-old grandmother and are supporting their younger siblings. "The accused are young offenders and voluntarily surrendered to the police. "Kirtik earns RM1,500 a month as a lorry attendant while Theshvinram, who suffers from shoulder injuries, has unstable income as a p-hailing rider. "They are innocent until proven guilty, and I ask for them to be given the lowest possible bail," she said. Redza set bail at RM7,000 with one surety for each accused and set Sept 8 for mention. Last Friday, their alleged accomplice, lorry driver, P. Nandakumaar, 32, was charged under Section 365 in connection with the same case before Shah Alam court magistrate Muhammad Syafiq Sulaiman. He, however, was denied bail. Subang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azlan Wan Mamat had said three suspects were arrested in Puchong and Hulu Selangor for their involvement in the abduction. Police seized clothes and mobile phones to facilitate further investigations. Wan Azlan said based on preliminary investigations, the motive of the abduction is unpaid debt. A 40-second video clip of the victim being forcibly shoved into the back of a lorry recorded by a road user has gone viral. The men were seen assaulting the victim as they pushed him into the lorry. Acting on a tip-off, a man was arrested and he was found with the victim.
