ASEAN, GCC And China Present Vast Collaborative Potential With Combined US$24.87 Trillion GDP

KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Bernama) -- ASEAN, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and China together represent a combined gross domestic product (GDP) of US$24.87 trillion (US$1=RM4.21) and a population of about 2.15 billion, offering vast opportunities to synergise markets, deepen innovation, and promote cross-regional investment, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.
'For the first time, ASEAN, the GCC, and China come together in this unique configuration – three partners, each rich in history, civilisation, culture, and shared aspirations, gather to open a new chapter of dialogue and cooperation,' he said in his opening remarks at the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit themed 'Synergising Economic Opportunities Towards Shared Prosperity.'
Also present were Kuwait's Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, who is also the president of the current session of the Supreme Council of the GCC; China's Premier Li Qiang; Malaysia's Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan; and Malaysia's Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz.
In 2023, ASEAN's GDP reached US$3.8 trillion, making it the world's fifth-largest economy.
That same year, total trade with the GCC stood at US$130.7 billion, with foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows of US$390.2 million.
China, meanwhile, remained ASEAN's largest trading partner with US$696.7 billion in trade and US$17.3 billion in FDI, which indicate immense existing linkages as well as substantial untapped potential.
'I hope this summit will stand as a new chapter in ASEAN's journey of outward-looking engagement, demonstrating what can be achieved when partners work together in mutual respect and shared purpose,' said Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister.
He expressed confidence that ASEAN, the GCC, and China can draw upon respective unique attributes, and shape a future that is more connected, more resilient, and more prosperous for generations to come.

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping told his US counterpart Donald Trump that the two should "correct the course" of bilateral relations, in a Thursday phone call reported by state media. The talks took place at Trump's request, the Xinhua news agency said without elaborating, and come as Washington and Beijing clash over areas such as trade and student visas. "Xi emphasised that the United States should handle the Taiwan issue carefully to avoid a small number of 'Taiwan independence' separatists dragging China and the United States into a dangerous situation of conflict and confrontation," CCTV said. The Chinese leader's comments come after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that Beijing's military was "rehearsing for the real deal" and preparing for a potential invasion of Taiwan. - AFP

According to the Laos News Agency (KPL), Tengku Maimun is on an official visit to the country from Tuesday (June 3) until Friday (June 6). Thongloun noted that this exchange contributes meaningfully to strengthening ties between the two nations and fosters long-term support, mutual assistance, and the sharing of judicial experiences. The President also voiced strong support for ongoing collaboration between the judicial bodies of Laos and Malaysia and emphasised the Laos' commitment to nurturing its longstanding relations with Malaysia, an important Asean partner with a shared history of cooperation. He highlighted 2026 as a milestone year, marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Tengku Maimun thanked President Thongloun for the warm welcome and outlined the objectives of her visit. Thailand unveils landmark entertainment complex to boost economy, tourism
BANGKOK: (Bernama) Thailand has unveiled plans for a landmark "Thailand Entertainment Complex' project, aimed at boosting economic growth, attracting international tourists and strengthening its global competitiveness. Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said the project was part of efforts to position Thailand as a premier destination for world-class attractions. "The complex is envisioned as a new economic engine, fostering tourism revenue and creating innovative industries to ensure sustainable economic growth,' he said in a statement on Thursday (June 5). The entertainment complex is anticipated to generate 12 to 40 billion baht in annual tax revenue while creating thousands of jobs, he said. Julapun said the government has submitted a draft bill to the House of Representatives to establish a regulatory framework for the complex. Meanwhile, Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister, Suksit Srichomkwan, said the complex will include a casino, which will operate under strict legal conditions and anti-money laundering measures. It will also feature concert halls, large convention and exhibition centres, amusement parks, museums, Michelin-starred restaurants, and green spaces for outdoor activities.
