Baking expert delivers shock take on RecipeTin Eats plagiarism scandal: 'I don't want to get in trouble'
RecipeTin Eats founder and best-selling author, Nagi Maehashi, has accused Penguin Australia of plagiarising recipes in Brooke Bellamy's Bake With Brooki.
Nagi took to social media and her website on Tuesday to make the accusations and invited followers to make their own conclusions.
Later that evening, Brooke hit back on Instagram to vehemently deny the accusations.
Now the owner and head baker at popular Brisbane eatery The Annerley Kitchen has given his thoughts on the drama.
Speaking to B105's Stav, Abby & Matt on Wednesday, baker Tu Pham gave his take on the confection clash.
'Could it be possible that the caramel slice recipe is just a caramel slice recipe and that's just what it is,' co-host Stav Davidson asked.
The baker replied that, like a snowflake, every caramel slice was unique.
'No every caramel slice recipe is different,' he said. 'Different ingredients. Similar ingredients but also different.'
'My caramel slice recipe is different to my brother's which is different to my other brother's and we are a family of bakers so every slice is different.'
Co-host Abby Coleman then asked Tu if the use of condensed milk was comment in caramel slice, as Nagi had claimed it was her 'secret'.
'Condensed milk is a primary ingredient in the caramel slice,' he admitted while revealing that vegetarian and vegan versions may use condensed coconut cream as a substitute.
Tu was then asked by Matt Acton to make a judgement call on who was in the right in the foodie fracas.
'Tu, I guess as an expert in caramel slice, we need to know whose side are you on?' he questioned.

Now the owner and head baker at popular Brisbane eatery The Annerley Kitchen (pictured) Tu Pham has given his thoughts on the drama
'I've got to be on the fence,' Tu diplomatically replied. 'I don't want to get in trouble.'
Brooke released her debut cook book in October 2024 after her Brisbane-based store Brooki Bakehouse became a viral sensation on TikTok.
Ms Bellamy's 'day in the life' videos were a huge hit as she gained a following almost four million followers across social media.
But the RecipeTin Eats founder has claimed that Bake With Brooki contains several plagiarised recipes including two of her own - caramel slice and baklava.
'To me, the similarities are so specific and detailed that calling these a coincidence feels disingenuous,' Nagi wrote.
'There are also recipes from other authors, including from a very well known, beloved cookbook author where the similarities are so extensive, dismissing it as coincidence would be absurd (in my opinion).
The RecipeTin Eats founder said Penguin had denied the allegations via their lawyers, adding that she's yet to receive a response from Ms Bellamy directly.
In a statement shared by Nagi, the publisher's lawyers said: 'Our client respectfully rejects your clients' allegations and confirms that the recipes in the BWB Book were written by Brooke Bellamy.'
Tu was then asked by Matt Acton to make a judgement call on who was in the right in the foodie fracas
'I've got to be on the fence,' the baker diplomatically replied. 'I don't want to get in trouble'
Ms Maehashi, who has now turned off comments on her Instagram post due to legal concerns, claimed she brought the allegations to Penguin's attention last December.
'You're a top tier publisher entrusted with protecting original work and upholding the integrity of the publishing industry,' she wrote.
'Your lack of accountability is profoundly disappointing.'
She alleged a new version of Bake With Brooki has quietly been released into stores in recent weeks with one huge difference in its pages.
In Ms Bellamy's original recipe, caramel is used to make the base in a similar way to Ms Maehashi's recipe.
The caramel slice recipe has since been tweaked, which Ms Maehashi claims is in response to her claims of plagiarism.
The RecipeTin Eats founder explained she used caramel 'rather than golden syrup which is the typical recipe' for this particular dessert.
In a new version of Bake With Brooki released to stores in recent weeks, the caramel slice recipe allegedly features golden syrup as an ingredient.

'That's not a knife': Sword-wielding man's Crocodile Dundee threat to neighbour
A man has appeared in court after he quoted from the comedy Crocodile Dundee while threatening someone with a sword. Darren Morrison's neighbour had brandished a kitchen knife at him following an altercation over noise, so he responded by fetching a replica sword from his own home. He then brandished the claymore-style weapon at the woman – itself a replica from 1986's sci-fi film Highlander – and quoted from the Paul Hogan hit, telling her: 'That's not a knife…' Morrison, 51, appeared at Tain Sheriff Court to admit a single charge of threatening behaviour in relation to the incident on July 3 of this year. Fiscal depute Adelle Gray told the court that, at around 9.30pm on that date, Morrison and his wife had been trying to put their grandchildren to bed at an address in Westford, Alness. His neighbour was 'playing her music loud' and when asked to turn it down in a Facebook message, she responded by telling them to 'f*** off'. An altercation between those at the house and the neighbour followed, during which the woman slammed doors while holding a speaker. She then grabbed a purple-handed bread knife and began to wave it, shouting: 'I'll take you all – come on then.' Morrison's wife shouted: 'She has got a knife,' prompting him to go inside his own house and grab a replica sword, which was mounted on the wall. He then returned to the garden and stated, 'That's not a knife…' brandishing the sword in her direction. Solicitor Patrick O'Dea, for Morrison, told Sheriff Mark Lindsay, that his client had been referencing Crocodile Dundee with his comment and had 'not been trying to terrify' the woman in question. Following this revelation, the sheriff questioned whether the scene appeared in the original film or its 1988 sequel, noting 'It's where he is in New York.' The famous scene appears in the first film, not the Australia-based sequel. Mr O'Dea told the court that Morrison – a 'genuine first offender' – was simply 'trying to make a ridiculous situation more ridiculous'. He said: 'He bitterly regrets reacting to the complainer's bread knife – he now reflects on it as ridiculous.' Mr O'Dea explained to the court that the 'huge weapon' wielded by his client was a replica of a prop from the 1986 Highlander movie and was not a real sword. Hearing this, Sheriff Lindsay ordered the forfeiture of the replica sword and deferred sentence on Morrison for three months to allow him to demonstrate good behaviour.

Emmerdale fans predict devastating twist in John storyline after mysterious phone call
Emmerdale fans have predicted that a major twist is on the cards for John Sugden amid his killing spree storyline after the corrupt medic made a mystery phone call during Tuesday night's episode Emmerdale fans have predicted that a major twist is on the cards for John Sugden amid his killing spree storyline. Viewers of the ITV soap will know that the corrupt medic has been responsible for the deaths of Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter) and Owen Michaels (Simon Haines) since he arrived in the village last year. Just as Tuesday's episode of the Yorkshire-based serial drew to a close, viewers were left shocked when John stepped away from the bar for a moment to make a phone call. He said: "Hey, it's me. I could do with some help again. I'll message you the details, but there's a loose end that needs tidying up. Tomorrow." The identity of the person on the other end was not revealed, but fans suspect that this means John could have had some sort of help in killing his fellow residents and they rushed to social media with their theories. It comes as John's exit from the show was reported with it thought the secret killer will soon face his downfall. One fan wrote on X: "So has someone helped John murder Nate? Who was he on the phone too at the end?" whilst another frustrated viewer simply asked: "What is John up to now?" A third fan said: "who is john calling ? Quite a mystery ! Im thinking!", whilst one perplexed viewer pointed out: "Like no one can overhear John on the phone. Surely he'd go outside to make the call." And a fourth viewer wrote: "Who is John speaking to when he says "It's me, I need your help" Is it Paddy running a "it's good to talk" helpline who he's ringing? Or is Anthony who could have been hiding in the cricket pavillion since he disappeared?" Another fan suggested that it may be a case of false identity, as they said: "Is John talking to the real John sugden ? If not who so many questions this guy is more complicated than the flipping Spaghetti Junction" All the drama comes after Aaron cheated on husband John with his ex-husband Robert, John's brother, on Monday. The pair were unable to hide their feelings any longer, but now Aaron's trying to cover up the betrayal. But with spoilers revealing Aaron will try to convince John to move away, wanting to run away from the drama with Robert, could his husband already know the truth? It's not entirely clear whether the listening device is till in the house, but it had been planted in the living room. Some fans say John removed it, but plenty others cannot remember this happening. So does this mean it's still there, and in the very room where Aaron confessed his feelings and shared a kiss with his ex? There's every chance, fans say, that John now knows the pair have slept together, and knows exactly how Aaron is feeling about Robert. Taking to social media, fans predicted this would be how John exposes them, with some convinced he already knows about the fling. One fan posted: "HOLD ON A SECOND. Aaron and Rob taking about their feelings in the living room… isn't John's snooping device still plugged in? God I hope he hears every word." Another fan said: "Yes I think it is still there." A third fan posted: "So surely Johns going to hear them kissing & hear Aaron telling Robert he's missed him (along with everything else) unless of course the listening device now coincidentally doesn't work?!" A fourth fan wrote: "The fact that John's recording device is picking up EVERY WORD is so satisfying to me. HEAR THAT JOHNNY BOY, ur plan completely backfired!" Emmerdale exit for fan favourite 'sealed' as new 'ruthless' villain exposed
Moira Dingle's future on Emmerdale has been left hanging in the balance as it has been revealed she is at the mercy of a new villain who was supposed to be her friend Moira Dingle's future on Emmerdale has been left hanging in the balance now that she has become tied up with the villainous Celia Daniels. The fan favourite, who has been played by Natalie J. Robb since 2009, is known to viewers of the ITV soap as a keen farmer, and viewers have watched her agricultural career go from strength to strength over the years, but on Tuesday's episode, it became apparent that all that will soon come crashing down. Fans will know that Moira had been feeling optimistic about a new farming contract that was on the horizon, and she thought that Celia (Jaye Griffiths) had been on her side with all the help she was supposedly giving her. But on the latest episode of the Yorkshire-based serial that that is not the case at all. Early in the morning, Moira was told to 'brace herself' for a big deal supposedly coming in from a hotel, and Celia offered to drop the latest order herself, and was reminded that payment was needed for the first one. Celia then called round to drop the bombshell that the contract had fallen through, fumbling an excuse about the chef not being happy with the produce. Moira fumed: "So now you're telling me we've got to write off thousands of pounds that we can't afford?" and Celia claimed that was now the 'only option' going forward. It comes as Vanessa kicked Charity out of her house just weeks ago after their kiss, which had sparked hopes for a Vanity reunion on the ITV soap. Moira said: "Every day is a struggle, and now this. Maybe I should just tap out before I'm knocked out!" But that was not the only twist in the episode as viewers learned of the deceit the hard-working farmer has been put under. Celia then made the trip up to Home Farm, and it became apparent that she has been working with Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) and Kim Tate (Claire King) to sabotage Moira's business this whole time. She coldly told Joe: "I have an update. I've just told Moira she's laid out thousands of pounds on an order that won't be paid. She delivered three orders without asking for a penny upfront, and she didn't read the contract properly. The woman's fool." Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley) worked out what was going on and Joe confirmed that it was all being done 'under Kim's express instructions'. Joe then asked Celia just how much longer Moira was likely to last in the business now that all this has been set up against her. She replied: "She won't make her water fine payment, let alone feed her livestock so my guess that it will all be over a week," before it was revealed that the con woman has a deal in place with Kim to guarantee her six months rent-free with the option to lease extra land. Joe explained that it is Kim's intention that Moira will have 'no choice' but to sell and reminded Dawn that the ruthless millionairess 'always gets what she wants' in life. But this is far from the end of the story for the Dales' latest villain as the actress issued a warning to viewers. Jaye, who previously starred in Casualty and The Bill, said: "The Emmerdale audience are finally starting to see the true extent of Celia's personality. She's great fun to play but she is ruthless and there is plenty more to come!" Recently, Moira actress Natalie J Robb hinted to press that there the whole thing could have gone either way with the recent ordeal her alter-ego has been put under. She said: "She starts a kind of different approach, she starts to befriend her and Moira actually quite likes her in the end. "The question is, Celia could be working with someone else to try and push her out, but it's whether Celia will stick with that. She's a force to be reckoned with, she's not somebody you would go against!"
