Illegal electric fence electrocutes 15-year-old to death in Kerala, injures two
A 15-year-old boy died of electrocution after coming into contact with an illegal electric fence in Kerala's Malappuram district. The victim, identified as Ananthu, along with two of his friends, Yadhu Krishnan and Shanu Vijay, had gone fishing in a canal in the district's Nilambur area, when they accidentally touched the charged electric fence on Saturday evening. The fence was reportedly installed to trap wild boars and had been illegally drawing electricity from a Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) single-phase power line. Yadhu and Shanu and also sustained injuries in the incident.advertisementThe police have arrested the man accused of setting up the trap, identified as Vineesh. Local residents claimed he regularly enters the forest to set animal traps and that this fence was installed to catch wild boars. They alleged there were multiple pending cases against him, and have called for strict action.
The death also sparked political controversy in the ongoing Nilambur bypoll campaign. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) organised protests, holding the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) responsible for negligence in preventing such illegal installations. CPI(M) state secretary MV Govindan suggested the incident might involve political conspiracy and called for investigating whether the protests were planned in advance. He also requested authorities examine the accused's phone records.Meanwhile, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, who represents the Wayanad constituency, expressed condolences over the incident. She emphasized the need for safety and vigilance, offered sympathy to Ananthu's family, and wished the injured children a swift recovery.advertisementIn a similar incident on May 26, two brothers, Nithin Biju and Ivin Biju, died of electrocution in Kozhikode after a live electric wire fell into a stream near their residence. The wire broke during strong winds and came into contact with the water, electrocuting the boys who were reportedly fishing or washing fruit in the stream.Last year in April, a wild elephant was electrocuted on private agricultural land in Wayanad district's Ammaani area. The elephant likely died when it came into contact with a live electric line, possibly while uprooting a coconut tree or becoming entangled in an electric fence.Written by Sneha A Suneeth

Kerala: Death of 15-year-old in Nilambur sparks controversy ahead of bye-polls
New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): With the Nilambur bye-polls just around the corner, the death of a 15-year-old from an illegal animal trap in the district has sparked controversy with Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday accusing the Kerala government of being negligent. 'Yesterday, a 15-year-old boy Ananthu was killed because he came into contact with a highly illegal electrified fence. As our minister, George Kurian said, he met the family, and he said that Ananthu is a martyr for the people of that region. It is clear that he is the victim of state government negligence, state government is covering up the incident that it's central government responsibility which is a lie,' the BJP's Kerala president Rajeev Chandrasekhar, told ANI. He accused the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government of being negligent against a particular community, as he added, 'Maybe they feel that in Nilambur this particular community has never voted for them, and that is why I would charge them with deliberate negligence against a particular community.' He also said that the Union Environment Minister has made it clear that the state government has enough powers to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts, without any interference from the Centre. 'Bhupender Yadav (Union Environment Minister) has made it absolutely clear that the state government had all the powers, and not only had it but used the power in the past in other municipalities and gram panchayats to kill wildlife and wild pigs who are causing harm to agriculture,' Chandrasekhar said. On the Kerala government claiming that there have been restrictions put on the state government, he added, 'it is a lie, a total falsehood, perpetuated by a government that has been bought, I have pictures of other incidents where they have used to powers to kill wild boars.' Earlier on Sunday, Union Minister George Kurian told ANI, 'A 15-year-old boy was killed by this illegal trap fixed by some people. The state government has failed to control this and is not taking any action. They keep blaming and say some laws should be amended. Kerala has totally failed to protect people living near forests. We are demanding a strong action.' Nilambur bye-polls are set to happen on June 19, with counting on June 29. The elections were necessitated after the resignation of PV Anvar, an LDF-backed MLA, who stepped down in January after making several allegations against the Left government in the state. However, Anvar is going to contest the elections under the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) banner. Anvar will be going up against National Democratic Alliance candidate Michael George. The byelection has political significance as it is a precursor to next year's state assembly election and will test the popularity of the current government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan (ANI)

"You lose and say all this...not good to dismiss mandate of people": Nitin Gadkari on Rahul Gandhi's allegations on Maharashtra polls
New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Monday slammed Rahul Gandhi over his allegations concerning Maharashtra assembly polls, saying that the Congress leader is making such remarks after losing the polls and it is not good 'to dismiss a mandate'. 'It is not good to dismiss a mandate given by the people. You lose and now say all this,' Gadkari told ANI in an interview. Rahul Gandhi had alleged 'rigging' in Maharashtra assembly polls and called upon the Election Commission to publish consolidated, digital, machine-readable voter rolls for the most recent elections to the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabhas of all states, including Maharashtra, saying that 'telling the truth' will protect poll panel's credibility. In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi, who is Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, referred to the ECI's response to his allegations concerning Maharashtra polls and said 'releasing unsigned, evasive notes to intermediaries is not the way to respond to serious questions'. Rahul Gandhi had written an article in an English daily on the issue. Election Commission sources had said that the poll panel wrote a detailed letter to Congress in December last year rejecting its 'misleading' claims about voter turnout data in Maharashtra polls and, instead of writing to the poll panel directly, Rahul Gandhi keeps speaking and writing to media seeking answers to his 'same unfounded doubts again and again'. They said it is not clear as to why Rahul Gandhi is shying away from writing to EC in person himself and get a reply. ECI sources had said that the poll panel had extended an invitation to the Indian National Congress (INC) for interaction, which was scheduled for May 15. However, the meeting was later cancelled at the request of INC itself. Gadkari also countered Gandhi's 'Narender-Surrender' jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gandhi had claimed that cessation of hostilities with Pakistan following Operation Sindoor had been done with mediation of US President Donald Trump. 'The citizens of the country know our government is very sensitive to the matter, how it works, how we respond and how we protect our people. We have almost ended Naxal activities in the country. (Improved) law and order is an achievement of our government,' the Union Minister said. Asked about the tragic stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, in which 11 people died during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations, Gadkari said Karnataka government should look into the lapses. 'An inquiry is being held into the matter. Where the lapses happened, Karnataka government needs to work on it,' the Union Minister stated. (ANI)
