"I'm scared for my life and career at this point." Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy jokes he's worried about his job after spate of drummer firings

Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy says he's worried about his future after seeing a spate of high-profile drummers lose their job recently.
Josh Freese was let go by the Foo Fighters this month, The Who fired Zak Starkey a few weeks ago and Guns N' Roses parted with Frank Ferrer in March.
Last year, Jason Bonham was replaced in Sammy Hagar's band.
Reacting to those firings, Portnoy jokes that he is looking over his shoulder.
As well as his role in Dream Theater, which he returned to in 2023, Portnoy works with a number of other groups and artists.
He tells Office Hours Live With Tim Heidecker: "I think it's the Spinal Tap conspiracy. I think nobody is safe. Ringo's son was fired from The Who. John Bonham's son was fired from Sammy Hagar's band.
"I mean, if the spawn of Ringo and Bonzo are not safe, nobody is safe."
On Freese's shock departure from Foo Fighters, Portnoy says: "Frankly, it's shocking. I thought Josh was perfect. So, yeah, it's scary. It's scary times for drummers.
"I'm scared for my life and career at this point. And I'm in, like, 15 bands, so I have 15 times the chance of getting fired right now. The odds are very much stacked against me right now."
On Starkey's firing from The Who, which came weeks after he was fired then almost immediately rehired, Portnoy adds: "The whole thing with Zak Starkey started ... they did a show last month at the Royal Albert Hall.
"They were doing The Song Is Over and Roger came into the second verse early and stopped the band, turned around and blamed it on his mix, that the drums were powering out his mix.
"Now, mind you, Zak Starkey is on an electronic kit. They already downgraded it off of an acoustic kit. They have him playing an electronic kit, which is fully controllable in terms of volume through the sound guy.
"So, if anything, he should have fired the monitor guy, not Zak."
Dream Theater released Parasomnia, their first album with Portnoy for 15 years, in February.

Antisemitic slur flung at Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy outside Toronto restaurant
Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy was subjected to an antisemitic slur while recording a video in Toronto on Monday. Portnoy visited an Italian restaurant called Terrazza to film one of his "One Bite Pizza Reviews" videos. Before he was about to take his one bite, an unseen man shouted "f--- the Jews" towards Portnoy, who is Jewish. "See? There we go," Portnoy remarked while some other young men behind him, none of whom made the remark, began snickering. Portnoy then turned back towards the men and chided, "What are you guys f---ing laughing about?" The young men immediately stopped laughing, with one of them replying, "terrible." Portnoy continued, saying that he would not let the slur get in the way. "What is that Toronto hospitality there?" Portnoy commented. "That's terrible, terrible," Portnoy's friend Bill the Greek remarked. "There's old school and then there's no school." "There's no school," Portnoy agreed. He went on to compliment the restaurant and gave the pizza a 7.4 score. Portnoy was wrapped up in another antisemitic incident last month when a sign that read "f--- the Jews" was spotted at one of Barstool Sports' bars in Philadelphia. Though he initially described feeling "f---ing mad" and itching to "ruin these people," Portnoy later announced that he was sending the alleged culprits responsible to visit Auschwitz in Poland to turn the incident into a teaching moment on the Holocaust. "These are young f---ing morons who did this. They're drunk. Do you really want to ruin somebody's life?" Portnoy said. "And let me be honest, I don't know what's going on in the world… I've been doing Barstool for 20 years, I've had more hate, more antisemitism in the last year, year and a half, than I've ever had doing it." However, he later revoked the offer to one of the accused men after he claimed the young man denied responsibility for what happened.

The Game Picks His Top 100 L.A. Rappers: ‘This My List, Punk!'
The Game wasn't happy with Complex's list of the top 50 L.A. rappers of all time, so he made his own list and posted it on Instagram with a lengthy caption attached. 'A few days ago @complexmusic dropped a list of the Top 50 LA rappers,' the Compton rapper began. 'I don't know who gave final approval but I get it… 'playas f— up too!!!' I was born and raised in this city and I've never moved from it, left it for more then two months or abandoned it to call anywhere else home. I've lost brothers, family, friends, and damn near my own life to the lifestyle that so many people around the world try to imitate.' 'And here I stand today as one of thee koldest rappers in the history of the city, state and coast I've given my blood sweat and tears to. Everybody on this list know what it is with me out here and those not on the list understand that the names above from top to bottom best represent this city and its culture.' He then continued about including certain rappers who weren't born in L.A. but have claimed and repped the city as their own, like 2Pac, who was born in New York City but raised in Baltimore and the Bay Area before becoming closely affiliated with Los Angeles during a good portion of his rap career. 'The few rappers on the list that weren't specifically born here are on the list because of their dedication and choice to ride with the city once they got here,' he said in regards to Complex deciding to leave 'Pac off of their list. 'It's non debatable!!! Argue all you want to but this is how I feel… if I'm wrong, challenge my pen and let me remind you of what and who I am. At the end of the day, this my list punk!!!! The Game's list is twice as long as Complex's, and his top 50 is somewhat similar aside from the order, but the main difference is that he decided to include rappers like 2Pac and The D.O.C. (from Texas) for their contributions to LA rap history even though they weren't born there. 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Kendrick Lamar and himself round out The Game's top five.
