SCREEN launches SCREEN Academy: Will identify, nurture Indian Cinema's most exciting voices of the future
With an exciting and fast-growing list of diverse members including Cannes and Oscar winners, Guneet Monga, Payal Kapadia and Resul Pookutty, and veteran screenwriter Anjum Rajabali, the Academy, working with India's top film institutes, will identify and empower the next generation of filmmakers through education, representation, and recognition.
Established with the generous support of Founding Patron Abhishek Lodha of the Lodha Foundation, SCREEN Academy will annually provide postgraduate fellowships to students nominated by their film schools, who demonstrate exceptional storytelling potential but lack the financial resources to pursue formal film education.
For details of the application process visit http://www.screen-academy.org
Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis said the timing and the location couldn't be more relevant. 'The film industry has an inseparable association with Mumbai. I am thrilled to learn of the inception of the not-for-profit SCREEN Academy by The Indian Express Group. I am certain that the Indian film industry will benefit immensely from the new filmmaking talent the academy aims to cultivate.'
Said Anant Goenka, Executive Director of The Indian Express Group, who steered the idea of the Academy: 'SCREEN Academy represents a bold step toward institutionalising excellence in the entertainment and culture space. We will create an ecosystem that not only celebrates excellence but actively nurtures diverse and promising talent with both financial aid and access.'
For Abhishek Lodha, the Academy's work is key to India's soft power and growth as a global leader in the creative arts. 'The Lodha Foundation is committed to supporting India's progress to becoming a developed nation by 2047. Films and creative arts are a key strength of our nation and the SCREEN Academy will play an important role in furthering India's progress to a global leader in this field. The Lodha Foundation is pleased to partner with the SCREEN Academy in this ambitious initiative.'
Academic Excellence and Industry Integration
The SCREEN Academy Fellowships 2025 will cover full financial support for postgraduate studies at premier institutions, Film and Television Institute of India (Pune), Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (Kolkata), and Whistling Woods International (Mumbai). The Academy plans to expand its footprint across the country and add more film schools going forward.
Beyond funding, SCREEN Academy fellows will benefit from an unprecedented industry mentorship programme featuring India's top studios and most respected film professionals as Academy members. These industry leaders will provide masterclasses, internships, and ongoing professional guidance.
Said Dhiraj Singh, Director, Film and Television Institute of India: 'SCREEN is a very respected name in film journalism. FTII is very happy that a meaningful collaboration is taking shape. I am sure students and the industry will benefit greatly with this scholarship program.'
Samiran Dutta, Director in charge of the Satyajit Ray institute, said the fellowships will plug a vital gap. 'We have talent from diverse and unknown parts of India, not only from urban metros, producing great ideas and fabulous stories. Understandably, some of our students find it difficult to negotiate the expenditure of film education. The SCREEN Academy fellowship will help in their quest to make great cinema'
'At Whistling Woods International, we believe that access to quality education can transform lives. This scholarship, in collaboration with the SCREEN Academy, ensures that financial constraints do not come in the way of creativity and ambition. It's a partnership rooted in shared values — excellence, inclusivity, and a deep commitment to nurturing the storytellers of tomorrow,'said Meghna Ghai Puri, President Whistling Woods International.
Selecting the fellows will be a panel headed by Anjum Rajabali, the veteran screenwriter and film academician. 'This hugely generous initiative offers much-needed support to young people to avail of formal education in the craft, for which the film, TV, and the OTT sector will be grateful for having access to this talent pool. These scholarships will help in driving up the quality of writing and filmmaking here.'
SCREEN Academy Members reflect a diverse list with representation across the industry.

Academy members will serve as the voting body, ensuring industry credibility and expertise guide the recognition process.
To ensure excellence, SCREEN Academy has established a Resident Critics Panel which includes Dr Priya Jaikumar, Professor of Cinematic Arts in the Division of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles and scholar-in-residence, SCREEN Academy, Priyanka Sinha Jha (Curator of SCREEN Awards); Shubra Gupta (The Indian Express Film Critic); Nikhil Taneja (Co-Founder of We are Yuvaa); and Anjum Rajabali (screenwriter and Head of Screenwriting at WWI and FTII).

Ex-IND Spinner 'Lucky' To Play With Sachin, Sourav, Dravid & VVS But Names WI Legend As 'Inspiration'
Last Updated: Murali Kartik credits his cricket inspiration to West Indies legend Sir Garfield Sobers but feels blessed to have mentors like Bedi and Singh and to play with Tendulkar and Dravid. Former India spinner Murali Kartik has shared insights into his cricketing journey, attributing his inspiration to West Indies cricket and the legendary Sir Garfield Sobers. 'Look, I've had the good fortune of taking up the sport because of West Indies cricket, to be very honest. For me, Sir Garfield (Sobers) was a great inspiration. I don't know if many people know about that, but I took up the sport because of West Indies cricket, and Sir Garfield Sobers was the inspiration," Kartik was quoted as saying to ANI. What Murali Kartik Said About Indian Cricketers? The left-arm spinner, who later represented India, expressed his gratitude for having Bishan Singh Bedi and Maninder Singh as mentors. 'As and when I became a left-arm spinner, I was lucky enough that I had the great Bishan Bedi and Maninder Singh as my mentor and guru. So for me, it's just been an absolutely brilliant journey," he added. Reflecting on his career, which spanned over two decades, Kartik considered himself blessed to play alongside some of India's finest cricketers. 'God was kind enough, I ended up playing the sport for twenty-six long years at various levels. I was also very lucky that I played possibly in one of the best generations with the likes of Sachin (Tendulkar), (Virender) Sehwag, Rahul (Dravid), (VVS) Laxman, Sourav (Ganguly), Zaheer (Khan), Ajit (Agarkar), (Javagal) Srinath, (Anil) Kumble, Harbhajan (Singh), the three of us as spinners, so, I can't ask for more, (Mohammed) Azharuddin was my captain at one stage. So it's just been a really nice journey," he said. On 'The Great Indian Cricket Show', Kartik also discussed storytelling in cricket, emphasising that behind every performance lies a tale of sacrifice and inspiration. 'Every story has a backstory, and the cricketers we watch or are inspired by. They've all had a story, even the other ones who aren't talked about. I think all of them have a story," he said. He added, 'With the help of explanations regarding statistics and all the technology, I think it should be a wonderful view because, at the end of the day, that is what inspires us. We all love a good story, and I always say this in sports: there is a lot of blood, sweat, and sacrifice involved, which any sports person has made, whether it's cricket or otherwise. So you have that story, and what has happened or transpired from it. I think that making a difference is what I feel." War 2 Day 5 India Box Office: Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani's movie crashes and burns; Adds Rs 9 crore gross on litmus Monday
War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji, and starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani among others, crashed at the Indian box office on 1st Monday, grossing a mere Rs 9 crore. After an extended opening weekend of Rs 200 crore, it was hoped that the movie would hold up with collections in the vicinity of Rs 15 crore gross in India, for some sort of a low run. However, that didn't happen. The movie has dropped by over 80 percent from its Independence Day Friday of Rs 67 crore. War 2 Grosses A Meagre Rs 9 Crore On 1st Monday At The India Box Office War 2 is not in a good condition, based on it's poor Monday hold. A Rs 275 crore gross India finish also looks tough from here. The actioner had a good opportunity to make most of the 2 week open run it had before Param Sundari, but that shall not happen. The rejection is across the board. The Hindi version is looking at a net of Rs 6.50 crore (Rs 7.80 crore gross) and the Tamil and Telugu versions are going to gross a combined of Rs 1.20 crore. The Day Wise Gross India Collections Of War 2 Are Are Under Day India Gross Collections Thursday Rs 59 crore Friday Rs 67 crore Saturday Rs 38 crore Sunday Rs 36 crore Monday Rs 9 crore Total Rs 209 crore gross in 5 days War 2 Will End Up As A Rare Biggie To Actually Lose Money For The Producers War 2 will be a rare movie by a big production house in recent times, to actually lose money. Most big movies are sorted, thanks to solid non-theatrical recoveries. In this case, War 2 does have solid non-theatrical recoveries, but that's not going to be enough to take the movie beyond the line. At around Rs 500 crore gross worldwide, War 2 would have somehow recovered its money. But the movie will sadly end Rs 150 crore under the said number, to emerge a flop.
