Orange alert in Delhi-NCR; thunderstorms forecast, traffic advisory for Rakshabandhan
'Thunderstorm and lightning with moderate rain is very likely over parts of South East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahadra, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi and North Delhi. Also, light rain and light thunderstorms with lightning (wind speed 30-40 kmph) are very likely over parts of South West Delhi,' an official said.
Delhi Police have issued a traffic advisory warning of severe congestion on Old GT Road due to waterlogging at GTK Depot, Jahangirpuri, and Adarsh Nagar, urging commuters to opt for the Delhi Metro instead.
'Due to the Raksha Bandhan festival weekend and recent rains causing waterlogging at GTK Depot, Jahangirpuri, and Adarsh Nagar, traffic on old GT Road is likely to be severely affected. To avoid congestion, commuters are advised to avoid taking old GT Road. Delhi Metro services are operational and can help minimize travel disruptions. Please plan your route accordingly,' a traffic advisory issued by Delhi Police read.
Overnight showers led to waterlogging in several areas, with the Public Works Department (PWD) receiving around 25 related complaints by Saturday 9 am from areas including Keshavpuram, Seelampur, Anand Parbat Road, MB Road near Sainik Farm, Saket Metro station, Najafgarh, Rohtak Road, and Vinod Nagar; under the Zakhira flyover; parts of Karkardooma; and in the Saraswati Vihar area of Pitampura.
Mathura Road on the carriageway from Sarita Vihar to Badarpur, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg from Kalkaji towards Defence Colony, both carriageways of GT Karnal Road between Mukarba Chowk and Azadpur, and both carriageways of Guru Teg Bahadur Road, RK Puram, Kidwai Nagar, and ITO—including the area in front of Bharat Mandapam—Panchkuian Marg, and Mathura Road, were also waterlogged.
Slow traffic was reported from Press Enclave Road and both carriageways of Anuvrat Marg near Qutub Minar Metro station.
The Delhi-NCR region saw light to moderate rain on Friday night. In the past 24 hours up till 8:30 am, the city recorded 78.7 mm of rainfall at Safdarjung, which is representative of the city's weather. However, Pragati Maidan and Lodi Road saw the highest rainfall, at 100.3 mm and 80.7 mm respectively. Between 5:30 and 8:30 this morning, the highest rainfall was recorded at Safdarjung at 49.6 mm, followed by 47 mm at PUSA.
According to the flight-tracking site Flightradar, Delhi is witnessing an average delay of at least 15 minutes in flight departures and a five-minute delay in arrivals. Though airlines also issued advisories for passengers to check their flight status in advance, Delhi Airport said that operations were normal.

This stretch, the construction of which cost Rs 5,580 crore, will ease traffic on Delhi's Inner and Outer Ring Roads and choke points like Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan, and NH-09. PM Modi also inaugurated a 10.1-km Delhi section of Dwarka Expressway. According to reports, this project costs Rs 5,360 crore, and is aimed to boost connectivity to Yashobhoomi, Delhi Metro's Blue and Orange lines, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station, and Dwarka cluster Bus Depot.

Heavy rain in Mumbai causes over 350 flight delays, 2 diversions at city airport; Details here
Heavy rainfall and unfavorable weather conditions in Mumbai on Saturday, led to a major disruption of flight operations at the city's airport. Over 350 flights were delayed, two were diverted, and over a dozen aircrafts executed go-arounds in the early hours of the day, Hindustan Times reported. According to the data compiled from Flightradar, a total of 360 flights were affected. It showed that 283 departing flights from the Mumbai Airport were delayed, while 77 inbound flights were running behind schedule. According to Hindustan Times' sources in Mumbai Airport, 15 aircraft bound for the city had to execute go-arounds on Saturday morning, aborting their initial landing attempt. While two flights were diverted to Nagpur and Ahmedabad. All the diversions and go-arounds were made between 12 am and 6 am on Saturday. In a separate incident, an IndiGo Airbus A321 experienced a tail strike at Mumbai Airport while attempting a low-altitude go-around. A senior DGCA official confirmed that the incident was due to unfavorable weather. The aircraft subsequently landed safely on a second attempt, with no injuries reported among the passengers or the crew, PTI reported. A statement from the Indigo Spokesperson said, 'On August 16, 2025, an IndiGo Airbus A321 aircraft tail touched the runway while executing a low-altitude go-around due to unfavorable weather conditions in Mumbai. Thereafter, the aircraft carried out another approach and landed safely." The airline said that the aircraft will go through necessary checks, repairs and regulatory clearance before resuming operations, the news agency said. These disruptions in flight operations happened after Mumbai witnessed heavy rainfall in the early hours of Saturday. The downpour, which began around 1 a.m., persisted through the day, with some parts of the city recording over 200 mm of rain, the news report said. The IMD reported that several areas of Mumbai received over 200 mm of rainfall between 8:30 a.m. on Friday and 5:30 a.m. on Saturday. Vikhroli in the eastern suburbs recorded the highest at 248.5 mm, followed by Santacruz with 232.5 mm, Sion with 221 mm, and Juhu with 208 mm.

IndiGo informed that the tail line of the aircraft hit the runway at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, following which the aircraft circled back and made a safe landing in the second attempt. "On August 16, 2025, an IndiGo Airbus A321 aircraft tail touched the runway while executing a low-altitude go-around due to unfavourable weather conditions in Mumbai. Thereafter, the aircraft carried out another approach and landed safely," the statement reads. The airline stated that, as per protocol, the aircraft will undergo a detailed inspection, necessary repairs if required, and obtain regulatory clearances before returning to service. "Following the standard protocol, the aircraft will go through necessary checks/ repairs and regulatory clearance before resuming operations," IndiGo said. The airline also reiterated that safety is its top priority and efforts are being made to minimise any disruption to operations.
