Alex de Minaur takes crucial step as Aussies create 30-year first at Wimbledon

Yahoo27-06-2025
Alex de Minaur says he feels 'ready and excited to compete' at Wimbledon after a confidence-boosting exhibition win over compatriot Alexei Popyrin. It comes as Australia gets set to send its largest contingent to Wimbledon in 30 years after four more players earned spots in the main draw through qualifying, taking the total to 17.
De Minaur made the sad admission recently that he was mentally and physically exhausted from tennis and needed to take a short break after his shock second-round loss to Alexander Bublik at the French Open last month. Australia's top-ranked male then lost to eventual Queen's finalist Jiri Lehecka in his only other grass-court outing in the past month, before beating Popyrin 6-3 6-4 in the Boodles invitation event on Thursday.
The now-traditional pre-Wimbledon exhibition is a five-day tournament featuring some of the world's best players in a typical British garden party setting at the Stoke Park Club. And while tougher tests lie in store at the All England Club next month, de Minaur says it was just what he needed heading into the year's third grand slam.
"I think this was a very important match for me to kind of get back on track, to get a match played in competitive spirit, and kind of try to put in place all the things I've been working on, and feel those match-type nerves," the World No.11 said. "Going into Wimbledon now, I feel ready and excited to compete.
"I love this time of the year. It's always a lot of fun. I think it's a surface that suits my game-style really well and, hopefully I can come play some good tennis in the coming weeks." De Minaur and World No.20 Popyrin are the two Australian men seeded for Wimbledon and will learn their first-round opponents in Friday's draw.
De Minaur was a quarter-finalist at the All England Club last year and says 'being mentally refreshed' and 'trusting his game' will be key to his hopes this year. "In the past, I've played some great tennis at Wimbledon, so it's about trusting myself and knowing that I can go out there and do it, just committing to my shots."

De Minaur will be joined in the Wimbledon main draw by 16 other Aussies in the nation's biggest contingent since 1995. Priscilla Hon, Talia Gibson, Aex Bolt and James McCabe became the latest to book their spots in qualifying, with Hon and Gibson both surviving match points.
The news wasn't as good for 16-year-old rising star Emerson Jones, who failed at the final hurdle as she sought to become the youngest Australian player since Ash Barty to make the singles main draw. But Hon - who was down 6-5 and then 0-40 in her clash with Canada's Victoria Mboko - saved five match points and mounted a stunning comeback to earn victory and book her spot.
Gibson also saved a match point at 5-3 in the third set before winning the next four games to progress to her first Wimbledon main draw. McCabe qualified on his first try by taking down the No.5 seed Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera in four sets. It came as 19-year-old Aussie Maya Joint - already qualified for Wimbledon - reached the semi-finals of the Eastbourne event with a straight-sets quarter-final win over Russian Anna Blinkova.

Gunston, Breust shine as Hawks dominate Demons

Best mates Jack Gunston and Luke Breust have shone at a wet MCG as Hawthorn shored up their AFL finals spot with an easy win over Melbourne. Gunston kicked seven goals, adding to his All-Australian claims at the age of 33, and now has a career-best haul of 59 for the season as the Hawks dominated from the start in Saturday's twilight game at the MCG, winning 13.14 (92) to 8.8 (56). Gunston's 7.4 equalled his career-best game, also this season, in round 15 against North Melbourne. At 33 years of age, Jack Gunston kicks his 59th goal for the season 🙌That's the most goals he's ever kicked in a single campaign 👀#AFLHawksDees — AFL (@AFL) August 16, 2025 The Hawks will now head to the Gabba next Sunday for a massive game against reigning premiers Brisbane, one of the round-24 clashes that will have a big say in where the top-eight teams finish. Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell had pumped up Saturday's clash with the Dees as a danger game, noting Melbourne had not been awful over the past month, despite the sacking of coach Simon Goodwin. But the game was effectively over at quarter-time after the Hawks booted five goals to one. Gunston put through two of them as he tormented Melbourne's 250-game key defender Steven May. With the game in their keeping, Breust was brought on as the sub early in the third term, two days after he announced he would retire at the end of this season. As is customary for the much-loved small forward, Hawks fans greeted him with resounding "boos". Those were amplified when he kicked a goal midway through the third, with teammates coming from everywhere as if it was the first goal of his career, not the 553rd. Gunston should have been even more prolific - the sharpshooter missed a couple of gettable shots in the first half. Another goal in the final term was overruled on review as hitting the post. He then put through his seventh goal and briefly left the field, before coming on for the end of the game Other than the veneration of Hawthorn's two three-time premiership forwards, Dylan Moore racked up a game-high 32 disposals and kicked two goals, while utility Jarman Impey was also excellent. By contrast, Melbourne were in danger of their lowest score this season before they kicked the last three goals of the game. It would have been much worse but for captain Max Gawn constantly dropping back to plug holes in defence. Gawn, headed towards another All-Australian nod, had an even ruck duel with the in-form Lloyd Meek, while midfielders Clayton Oliver and Tom Sparrow also impressed for the Demons. Jake Melksham, one of few Melbourne forwards to enjoy consistent form this season, surprisingly started the game as the sub.

Newcastle officially FAIL to stop star joining Liverpool

Newcastle United have failed to stop one star from joining Liverpool this summer. They did all they Newcastle United have not had the transfer window they hoped for. The Magpies qualified for the UEFA Champions League, after all, and are a wealthy club - it should be fairly routine. Instead, they've consistently missed out on targets. Part of that is certain clubs, like Manchester United, dramatically altering the market with their business. Shop the LFC Store 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! Newcastle wanted to sign Ekitiké to replace Callum Wilson and pushed to agree a fee. Then the Reds waltzed in and snapped him up. They turned their attention to Benjamin Sesko and then lost out to Man United after a long, long saga. And all of this with Alexander Isak kicking up a fuss in the background. But it turns out that Ekitiké isn't actually the only player Newcastle have missed out on to Liverpool. There's now a second. Newcastle wanted Giovanni Leoni Paul Joyce in The Times writes that Newcastle did make a push to sign Giovanni Leoni before he agreed a move to Liverpool. They went as far as bidding to Parma for the talented teenager. But Leoni picked Liverpool, much as Ekitiké did. A difference-maker was the fact the Reds were able to show a clear path to the first-team. And there's certainly that. Ibrahima Konate's contract expires in a year, while Virgil van Dijk is now 34. Leoni simply needs to keep developing at the level he has been and there's a regular starting role just waiting for him. This, however, will be a massive blow to Newcastle once again. They just haven't had their way in this window whatsoever and it might actually get worse. Isak remains eager to leave and Liverpool remain eager to buy. Newcastle have two more weeks to make a massive decision - and it could well see yet another star heading to Merseyside over Tyneside.

Arteta responds to calls for Rice to be made captain

Mikel Arteta has dismissed calls for Martin Ødegaard to be replaced as Arsenal captain, insisting there is 'no question' the midfielder is the right figure to lead the team into another title race. Photo via The debate was reignited this week after former captain Tony Adams urged Arteta to hand the armband to Declan Rice, arguing the England international would better embody the mentality required to turn Arsenal from contenders into champions. Arteta, however, revealed that his decision was backed not just by his staff but overwhelmingly by the players themselves. 'My opinion is clear, and it's not just my opinion. It's all the staff and especially the players,' he said. 'I asked them to vote for the captain and I got the results yesterday. By a mile, by a big, big (margin), by 100 miles, everybody chose the same person, Martin Odegaard, which is the most clear sign that you can have. It's how they feel about who has to be their captain, to defend, to improve, and win the matches that we want to win, so I think there is no question about that.' Photo byØdegaard has worn the armband since 2022 but, after Arsenal's sequence of near-misses in the league and three successive second-place finishes, questions have often been raised over the side's ability to withstand pressure in when it really matters. Adams was blunt in his assessment: 'Every now and again as a manager, you have to put someone who reflects you, who reflects the football club, that you think can actually take you to the next level. You've got someone in there who's going to play every game all season, that's going to encourage people to come in and lay the foundations of a title-winning team. Declan Rice can do that, Odegaard can't. Come on Arteta, make him captain.' Photo byArteta, himself a former Arsenal captain, pushed back against those claims and stressed that leadership was not something decided externally. 'What matters the most is how these guys feel about who needs to lead them, how they feel comfortable, who is going to push them, who is going to give them support when it's happening,' he said. Arsenal begin their season at Manchester United on Sunday before hosting Leeds, with a testing run against Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Newcastle to follow. Photo byArteta accepts those games will reveal how far his team have come. 'Yes, especially with the consistency that we showed in the last three years, and now the margins, we know how small they are,' he said. 'We know that the competition has increased the level with recruitment, with another year together.' The Arsenal manager confirmed that Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi will both be ready to feature at Old Trafford from the start, where Ødegaard will once again lead out the side his teammates voted to follow.
