Mumbai: The state government on Monday postponed the deadline for formation of wards under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and other civic bodies in Maharashtra by a month, from September 4 to October 6. The revised deadline indicates that polls to the BMC and other civic bodies would be held after Diwali, which will be celebrated from October 18 till October 23, said officials. Only one representative from each ward would be elected to the 227-member BMC while all other municipal corporations in the state would have four elected members per ward (Hindustan Times)
The order specifying the change in deadline and revised timetable was issued by the urban development department.
According to the order, commissioners of civic bodies including the BMC and other municipal corporations under classes A, B and C – which include civic bodies in the MMR and metro cities like Pune, Nashik and Nagpur – would have to submit draft ward formation details to the urban development department from September 9-15, and issue the notification demarcating wards between October 3-6, following a nod from the state election commission. Municipal corporations under class D would have to issue the final ward notification between October 9-13, whereas municipal councils would have to do so between September 26-30.
The state election commission said it had no role in preparing the revised timetable.
All municipal corporations in the state have been functioning without elected bodies since January 1, 2024 or earlier, after the term of former corporators expired. Elections to local bodies were delayed, first due to the Covid-19 pandemic, followed by a dispute over ward formation between the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and the Mahayuti.
Earlier, on June 10, the state government had ordered the BMC to prepare the draft ward formation list and said that only one representative from each ward would be elected to the 227-seat civic body. All other municipal corporations in the state would have four elected members per ward, the government had clarified, bringing back the policy of multiple representatives per ward after a hiatus of a few years. The population as per the 2011 census would be considered for ward formation, the government had said.

Will Shashi Tharoor join BJP? Congress MP puts speculation to rest

Senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday defended his article on Operation Sindoor's global outreach, saying it was not a sign of his "leaping to join" Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party but a "statement of national unity". Congress MP Shashi Tharoor had heaped praise on PM Modi, terming his energy and dynamism as "an asset for India"(Hindustan Times) In a recent news article with a daily, Shashi Tharoor had heaped praise on PM Modi, terming his energy and dynamism as "an asset for India". "Prime Minister Narendra Modi's energy, dynamism and willingness to engage remains a prime asset for India on the global stage, but deserves greater backing," he wrote in the article in The Hindu. he also described Operation Sindoor as "a moment of national resolve", emphasising the value of unity as a nation and of public diplomacy. Tharoor led one of the seven Indian delegations to put forth the nation's stance on terrorism and brief them about Operation Sindoor. His delegation visited Panama, Guyana, Colombia, Brazil, and lastly the United States. However, his remarks were seen as a likely attempt to irk his Congress party and are expected to form cracks on already tense ties. 'Standing up for India' The Thiruvananthapuram MP was asked about his article at an event in Moscow and he responded saying, "It is not a sign of my leaping to join the prime minister's party (the BJP) as some people unfortunately have been implying. It is a statement of national unity, of national interest and of standing up for India, which to my mind is fundamentally why I came back to India after 25 years of service at the UN." ALSO READ | 'He was very pleasant': What Tharoor said on meet with Modi over Op Sindoor outreach task Leading the delegation on Operation Sindoor, Tharoor said, was to "serve India". "I am very proud to have the opportunity to do so," he added. The Congress leader further clarified that while he did praise the Prime Minister, the article was written about Operation Sindoor. He noted that people always tend to see all this in the context of today's news. 'It is an article in which I describe the success of this outreach mission, which, amongst other things, showcased the unity of all parties behind the matter of vital national interest," Tharoor said. "So, I said the prime minister himself has demonstrated dynamism and energy in engaging with other countries. He has travelled to more countries than any prime minister, and done so in order to take the message of India around the world," he added. ALSO READ | Shashi Tharoor admits differences with Congress leadership: 'You know what I am talking about' The Congress leader said that according to him, members from various parties came together to give PM Modi's efforts a 'backup' by bringing to bear the strength of all of India's different political parties and groups, 'and convey to the world that a message that a united India stands for'. 'Today it is a message against terrorism, tomorrow it could be a message on something else, but that backing up, I believe, is very important," he said. He agreed with the expression that Americans use to say that political; differences should stop at the water's edge. "I, too, have believed for the longest time that political differences in our democracy should stop at the borders. For us, it seems to me there is really no such thing as a BJP foreign policy or a Congress foreign policy, there is only Indian foreign policy and Indian national interest,' Tharoor said. Tharoor added that he had not said anything new, in fact, he had said the same thing many years ago. 'I said this publicly, on the record, the very first time when I became the chairman of the External Affairs committee back in 2014,' he said. Tharoor vs Congress on India-Pak conflict Tharoor's article on Operation Sindoor was also shared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office on X. Meanwhile, Tharoor's praise of PM Modi gained significance against the backdrop of an irked Congress, which has been continuously attacking the Modi government over its foreign policy. EPFO enhances auto settlement limit for members

The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has enhanced the auto-settlement limit for advance claims from ₹1 lakh at present to ₹5 lakh. Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told reporters here on Tuesday (June 24, 2025) that the move will help lakhs of EPFO members to receive funds faster, especially in times of urgent need. The Minister said the EPFO had first introduced auto-settlement of advance claims during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide quick financial assistance to members. 'Since then the facility has been extended to cover advance claims for illness, education, marriage, and housing purposes. These claims are processed automatically by the system without any human involvement, ensuring quick turnaround and transparency,' he said. He said the EPFO had taken a series of reforms to make EPFO services faster, transparent and user-friendly. Mr. Mandaviya added that in 2024–25, EPFO processed a record 2.34 crore advance claims through auto-settlement, a 161% increase compared to 89.52 lakh claims in 2023–24. 'Notably, 59% of all advance claims in 2024–25 were settled through the auto mode as compared to 31% in 2023-24. Further, in just the first 2.5 months of FY 2025–26, EPFO has already auto-settled 76.52 lakh claims, constituting70% of all advance claims settled so far,' he said. Increase in Social Protection Coverage The Minister claimed that the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has appreciated the efforts of Narendra Modi Government to expand social security network. 'ILO acknowledged India's achievement and officially published on its dashboard that 64.3% of India's population, i.e. over 94 crore people, are now covered under at least one social protection benefit. In 2015, this figure was just 19%. In terms of beneficiary count, India now ranks second in the world, providing social protection to around 94 crore citizens,' he said adding that the Director General of the ILO praised India's focused welfare policies for the poor and labour class.

Watch: Why Kailash Manasarovar Yatra matters for India-China relations

The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra is resuming after a gap of 6 years. The yatra has been on since 1981, but came to a halt due to the Covid pandemic, then the Galwan conflict and tensions at the LAC between India and China that lasted from 2020 to 2024. Now, a series of steps are being taken to 'normalise' ties between India and China, and the restart of the yatra is one of them. About 750 pilgrims will travel to Tibet between June and August, with the first batch expected to travel from Delhi on June 30. At the diplomatic level, top leaders including Ajit Doval, Rajnath Singh, S. Jaishankar will travel to China for summits in the coming months. PM Narendra Modi too is expected to visit China for the SCO summit, his first visit to China since the LAC tensions. The Hindu's Suhasini Haidar is part of a journalistic delegation traveling from Chengdu to Lhasa and then onto the trek to the Kailash Manasarovar. Editing: Shibu Narayan
