William Jones Cup kicks off
The 44th William Jones Cup begins tomorrow in Chinese Taipei, running until July 20. Bahrain's senior men's basketball team is set to compete against nine top Asian teams.
Bahrain will face tough competition including Japan, Australia, Malaysia, the UAE, and hosts Chinese Taipei. Also in the mix are Chinese Taipei's development squad, Qatar's B team, and defending champions Strong Group Athletics from the Philippines.

For Bahrain Basketball Association President Alaa Mudara, the William Jones Cup is a vital step in a long-term plan. 'This competition offers a different intensity from what we face in the Gulf, and that challenge is exactly what we need to prepare for the Arab Cup in Tunisia.'
Mudara brings personal history to the moment, having represented Bahrain in the 1978 William Jones Cup as a player. 'That year, we were named best team of the tournament,' he recalled. 'Now, returning as president, I see the same hunger in this generation.'
The Squad
Greek coach Georgios Vovoras has named a near fullstrength roster. Key players include guards Mustafa Hussain and Ahmed Salman, forwards Mohammed Ameer, Subah Hussain, Mohammed Buallay, Ali Jaber, and naturalised stars Wayne Chism and JaKarr Sampson. The squad is completed by Mahmood Abbas, Ali Hussain, Ahmed bin Deina, and Abdulqader Thani.
The William Jones Cup is a prestigious Asian tournament organised by the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association. Many teams use it as a warmup for the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 in Jeddah next month.
Tough Road Ahead
Bahrain opens tomorrow against continental powerhouse Japan, followed by games against Chinese Taipei's development team, Malaysia, Australia, the UAE, Qatar's B team, Chinese Taipei's national team, and Strong Group Athletics.
The team has prepared with local training sessions and won two recent friendlies against the UAE at Khalifa Sports City Arena.

Egypt Exposed Briefly Mazen Mohamed and Ebrahim Amin combined for 36 points, and Mohamed Ashraf grabbed 10 rebounds, but Egypt's rotations never fully clicked. Despite Amin's 9 assists, Bahrain punished late lapses, with Wayne Chism's blocks and second-chance plays proving decisive. Tunisia on the Climb Tunisia pipped the UAE 78–70, with Omar Abada scoring 18 and man of the match Yacine Toumi adding 14 points and two blocks. Despite 27 from Dickerson, Tunisia held firm. Toumi called the American guard 'a great player' and added, 'UAE are no pushover — they beat Bahrain. Every match is a final,' as Tunisia prepares to face Egypt tonight. Qatar face UAE (4PM), Kuwait meet Algeria (6PM), and Egypt take on Tunisia (8PM). Bahrain rest today and tomorrow before facing Algeria on Friday at 8PM.

Luis Díaz Set to Leave Liverpool

The Colombian forward is set to join Bayern Munich in a €75 million move, ending a three-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield that brought both flair and frustration — and, ultimately, silverware. Bahrain Rates Youth Support
TDT | Manama A new national initiative will evaluate how public and private institutions in Bahrain support young people, marking a strategic shift toward embedding youth-focused policies into organisational structures. Announcing the launch of the 'Daem Al Shabab' (Youth Support) initiative, Youth Affairs Minister H.E. Rawan bint Najeeb Tawfeeqi said the effort is part of a wider national strategy that aims to empower Bahraini youth through structural reform and targeted engagement. The initiative was developed in line with the directives of His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of His Majesty the King for Humanitarian Works and Youth Affairs and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports. Rewriting the Playbook 'Daem Al Shabab' introduces a formal classification system that assesses institutions on their youth empowerment efforts. Institutions will be evaluated using clear criteria based on their performance in employment, training, decision-making inclusion, and talent development. Those that lead in applying the highest standards will be placed in the Gold Category, while others that show clear commitment and contribute tangible results will be recognised in Category II. Minister Tawfiqi said the initiative is an extension of the Ministry's work to strengthen partnerships, encourage sustainable engagement, and open new pathways for youth involvement in all sectors. She described it as a means of institutionalising youth participation and ensuring it becomes a permanent feature of national progress. Incentives and Reform The classification aims to create a positive, competitive environment that motivates institutions to raise their standards. Distinguished organisations will receive incentives and special benefits in cooperation with the initiative's partners. Faisal Isa Alkhayyat, Director of Policy and Strategic Planning at the Ministry, presented the criteria.
