William Jones Cup kicks off

Daily Tribune11-07-2025
TDT | Manama
The 44th William Jones Cup begins tomorrow in Chinese Taipei, running until July 20. Bahrain's senior men's basketball team is set to compete against nine top Asian teams.
Bahrain will face tough competition including Japan, Australia, Malaysia, the UAE, and hosts Chinese Taipei. Also in the mix are Chinese Taipei's development squad, Qatar's B team, and defending champions Strong Group Athletics from the Philippines.
From Paint to Presidency
For Bahrain Basketball Association President Alaa Mudara, the William Jones Cup is a vital step in a long-term plan. 'This competition offers a different intensity from what we face in the Gulf, and that challenge is exactly what we need to prepare for the Arab Cup in Tunisia.'
Mudara brings personal history to the moment, having represented Bahrain in the 1978 William Jones Cup as a player. 'That year, we were named best team of the tournament,' he recalled. 'Now, returning as president, I see the same hunger in this generation.'
The Squad
Greek coach Georgios Vovoras has named a near fullstrength roster. Key players include guards Mustafa Hussain and Ahmed Salman, forwards Mohammed Ameer, Subah Hussain, Mohammed Buallay, Ali Jaber, and naturalised stars Wayne Chism and JaKarr Sampson. The squad is completed by Mahmood Abbas, Ali Hussain, Ahmed bin Deina, and Abdulqader Thani.
The William Jones Cup is a prestigious Asian tournament organised by the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association. Many teams use it as a warmup for the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 in Jeddah next month.
Tough Road Ahead
Bahrain opens tomorrow against continental powerhouse Japan, followed by games against Chinese Taipei's development team, Malaysia, Australia, the UAE, Qatar's B team, Chinese Taipei's national team, and Strong Group Athletics.
The team has prepared with local training sessions and won two recent friendlies against the UAE at Khalifa Sports City Arena.

Bahrain's Bounceback Sends Egypt Crashing

TDT | Manama Bahrain's 91–85 win over Egypt last night was a jolt through the Championship. After two straight defeats and with their title hopes wobbling, the hosts stepped onto the court at Khalifa Sports City seeking rejuvenation, and got just that. They sent shockwaves by toppling the unbeaten, defending champions in front of the watching eye of HH Shaikh Isa bin Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa. Ali Hussain sealed it with a composed layup in the final seconds, before Egypt's desperate midcourt heave missed wide at the buzzer. Mustafa's Moment Mustafa Hussain was unplayable again, pouring in 27 points and earning man-of-the-match honours. While JaKarr Sampson extended his 20+ point streak with 28 more, it was Hussain's shot-making and floor control that tilted the game Bahrain's way. They edged the first quarter 28–25, matched Egypt 25–25 in the second, edged the third (13–11), and pulled away late with a 27–22 final frame. Egypt Exposed Briefly Mazen Mohamed and Ebrahim Amin combined for 36 points, and Mohamed Ashraf grabbed 10 rebounds, but Egypt's rotations never fully clicked. Despite Amin's 9 assists, Bahrain punished late lapses, with Wayne Chism's blocks and second-chance plays proving decisive. Algeria Stay Perfect Algeria beat Qatar 92–66, led by man of the match Ben Zaim Sid (21 points, 11 rebounds). Sofiane Briki added 17, as Algeria's fast start set the tone. Qatar's Janik (19 pts) and Moosa (17) impressed, but couldn't contain the pace. Tunisia on the Climb Tunisia pipped the UAE 78–70, with Omar Abada scoring 18 and man of the match Yacine Toumi adding 14 points and two blocks. Despite 27 from Dickerson, Tunisia held firm. Toumi called the American guard 'a great player' and added, 'UAE are no pushover — they beat Bahrain. Every match is a final,' as Tunisia prepares to face Egypt tonight. Qatar face UAE (4PM), Kuwait meet Algeria (6PM), and Egypt take on Tunisia (8PM). Bahrain rest today and tomorrow before facing Algeria on Friday at 8PM.

Luis Díaz Set to Leave Liverpool

TDT | Manama Luis Díaz's Liverpool journey is drawing to a close. The Colombian forward is set to join Bayern Munich in a €75 million move, ending a three-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield that brought both flair and frustration — and, ultimately, silverware. Signs of a departure had been visible for months. A heartfelt social media post by his now-wife Gera Ponce following Liverpool's title win in May read like a farewell. The family's celebration in front of the Kop, wrapped in Colombian flags, now marks a closing chapter. Since arriving from Porto in January 2022, Díaz made 148 appearances and scored 41 goals, becoming a fan favourite for his directness, tenacity, and infectious energy. His Liverpool career began brightly, with an assist 10 minutes into his debut and an immediate place in a reshuffled attack that saw Sadio Mané move centrally to accommodate him on the left. He played all three domestic finals in his debut half-season, contributing to Liverpool's League Cup and FA Cup wins, though the team fell short in both the Premier League and Champions League. A serious knee injury disrupted his second campaign, but he returned to help win another Carabao Cup in 2024 and played a key role in the club's run to the Premier League title last season. Off the pitch, Díaz's family endured trauma when his father was kidnapped and held hostage for 12 days in Colombia — a moment that united the club and country in support. Under new head coach Arne Slot, Díaz's role evolved. Slot deployed him more centrally, at times as a false nine, and the approach yielded his most productive season yet: 17 goals in all competitions, including a Champions League hat-trick and key contributions in wins over Spurs, Manchester United, and Crystal Palace. Still, Liverpool's willingness to part ways reflects several underlying factors. Díaz rejected two contract extension offers, and with just two years left on his deal and interest mounting from Europe's elite, Liverpool saw the logic in selling now rather than risk losing value later. Bayern's improved offer — rising from €67.5m to €75m — ultimately shifted the club's stance. The transfer has proceeded smoothly, with Díaz training throughout Liverpool's Asia tour before being granted permission to finalise the move. The departure is amicable on both sides. From Liverpool's perspective, left-sided depth played a role in the decision. Cody Gakpo, who scored 18 times last season, is seen as a natural successor, while new signing Hugo Ekitike can also operate from the flank. The emergence of 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha, a standout in pre-season, has further reinforced belief in the next generation. Díaz may not have matched the lasting impact of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, or Roberto Firmino, but his contribution was significant. He departs a title winner, a well-liked figure in the dressing room, and a player who always gave his all — even when consistency eluded him. Now 28, he leaves for a new challenge and a more lucrative contract in Germany. His time at Liverpool may not have defined an era, but it helped shape one. If he returns to Anfield in Bayern colours, the reception will likely be warm, and richly deserved.

Bahrain Rates Youth Support

TDT | Manama A new national initiative will evaluate how public and private institutions in Bahrain support young people, marking a strategic shift toward embedding youth-focused policies into organisational structures. Announcing the launch of the 'Daem Al Shabab' (Youth Support) initiative, Youth Affairs Minister H.E. Rawan bint Najeeb Tawfeeqi said the effort is part of a wider national strategy that aims to empower Bahraini youth through structural reform and targeted engagement. The initiative was developed in line with the directives of His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of His Majesty the King for Humanitarian Works and Youth Affairs and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports. Rewriting the Playbook 'Daem Al Shabab' introduces a formal classification system that assesses institutions on their youth empowerment efforts. Institutions will be evaluated using clear criteria based on their performance in employment, training, decision-making inclusion, and talent development. Those that lead in applying the highest standards will be placed in the Gold Category, while others that show clear commitment and contribute tangible results will be recognised in Category II. Minister Tawfiqi said the initiative is an extension of the Ministry's work to strengthen partnerships, encourage sustainable engagement, and open new pathways for youth involvement in all sectors. She described it as a means of institutionalising youth participation and ensuring it becomes a permanent feature of national progress. Incentives and Reform The classification aims to create a positive, competitive environment that motivates institutions to raise their standards. Distinguished organisations will receive incentives and special benefits in cooperation with the initiative's partners. Faisal Isa Alkhayyat, Director of Policy and Strategic Planning at the Ministry, presented the criteria.
