India's Gill keen to focus on batting not captaincy pressure ahead of England series

Straits Times10 hours ago

Newly-appointed India test skipper Shubman Gill said he wants to concentrate on his batting rather than the pressure of captaincy as his side prepares to start a new era following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Kohli and Rohit, former captains and batting mainstays of the team, both quit tests weeks before the start of India's five-test series in England.
India named top-order batsman Gill as their new test captain in May, picking the 25-year-old over pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah to replace Rohit.
India have long recognised Gill's leadership qualities, previously naming him vice-captain in both white-ball formats, while he also had two seasons as skipper of Indian Premier League (IPL) side Gujarat Titans.
"Honestly, when I want to go out there and bat, I just want to play as a batsman, not really want to think that I'm the captain of the team because I think that sometimes puts too much pressure on you," Gill told reporters on Thursday.
"Whenever I'm going out there, I want to play as a batsman and want to dominate the opposition and be the best batsman in the series, and that's what I'm trying to look at."
Gill said captaining India to a series win over England would be bigger than triumphing in the IPL, which he won with Gujarat in 2022.
"Definitely the test series, in my opinion," he said.
"You don't get many opportunities as a captain to be able to come to England, maybe two; if you are the best of your generation, maybe three. And IPL comes every year, and you get to have a crack at it every year.
"So in my opinion, winning a test series in England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa is bigger."
Gill, who has scored 1,893 runs in 32 test matches with an average of 35.05, will drop down one spot in the order to take Kohli's old position at number four.
"After Virat bhai (brother) retired, me and GG (coach Gautam Gambhir) bhai had a discussion about it, and we were both clear that he wanted me to bat at number four, and I was also clear that I also wanted to bat at that number," Gill said.

Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova to retire after US Open

Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova celebrates with the trophy after winning the Wimbledon final in 2014. PHOTO: REUTERS Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova to retire after US Open PARIS – Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova announced on June 19 that she will be retiring from the professional tennis circuit after this year's US Open. The 35-year-old Czech, who is currently ranked down at 572nd in the world, reached a career-high ranking of 2 in 2011 when she won the first of her two Wimbledon titles. She triumphed again in 2014 and went on to reach the final of the Australian Open in 2019. This week she was handed a wildcard entry for one last outing on the grass courts of south-west London. 'There comes a day that it is time for a new chapter and that time for me has come now,' the left-handed Kvitova wrote on social media. 'I therefore wanted to share with you that 2025 is my last season on tour as a professional. 'I am excited and very much looking forward to soak in the beauty of playing The Championships, Wimbledon one more time, a place that holds the most cherished memories in my career for me. 'While I am not entirely sure yet what my hardcourt swing in the US will look like, I am intending to finish my active playing career at the US Open in New York later this summer.' Kvitova won Olympic bronze in 2016 but just before Christmas she was attacked in her home by a knife-wielding robber, suffering cuts to the nerves and tendons in her left-hand. She was a member of six Czech teams to have won the Fed Cup and won the most recent of her 31 tour titles on the grass in Berlin in 2023. Kvitova missed the 2024 season in order to give birth to her first child. Since returning, she is 1-6, with her lone win coming in the first round of Rome. 'I could not have asked or wished for anything more,' Kvitova added. 'Tennis has given me everything I have today, and I will continue to be forever grateful to this beautiful sport that I love.' Meanwhile in tennis action on June 19, Coco Gauff fell at the first hurdle on grass in Berlin 12 days after winning her second Grand Slam title at the French Open. Recipient of a first-round bye, the American lost 6-3, 6-3 to Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu. Gauff, a winner of 10 main tour titles, including the US Open in 2023 and the WTA Finals in 2024, has yet to lift a trophy in a grass-court tournament. In men's tennis, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner's bid to win back-to-back Halle Open titles ended following a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat by Alexander Bublik in the last 16, the top seed's first loss to a player outside the Top 20 since 2023. Botafogo stun PSG 1-0 at Club World Cup

LOS ANGELES - Brazil's Botafogo stunned European champions Paris St Germain 1-0 on Thursday to throw Group B at the Club World Cup wide open. PSG dominated possession at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena but Botafogo's defence stood tall to withstand waves of attacks from the French side in the first competitive meeting between the two clubs. A turnover near midfield generated an opportunity for Igor Jesus, whose deflected shot left PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma flatfooted and only able to watch as the ball skipped into the net in the 36th minute. PSG continued to be the aggressors in the second half as Botafogo were content to protect their lead and try to capitalize on the break. PSG, who had scored 19 goals in their last five matches, had the ball in the net in the 79th minute but the goal was chalked off for offside and Botafogo held for the shock win. Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca ‘trusts' Mykhailo Mudryk after doping charge

Chelsea's Mykhailo Mudryk could face up to a suspension of four years following his positive drug test. PHOTO: REUTERS PHILADELPHIA – Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said on June 19 that he still maintained trust in Mykhailo Mudryk, after the Ukrainian winger was charged by England's Football Association (FA) with violating anti-doping rules. But he also confirmed that the club were looking to strengthen in his position. 'Mischa is a Chelsea player. As long as he is a Chelsea player, I will trust all the Chelsea players,' Maresca told reporters in Philadelphia ahead of his team's Club World Cup clash with Flamengo on June 20. Mudryk has not played for Chelsea since Nov 28 following his provisional suspension by the FA for an 'adverse finding in a routine urine test' in December. He was reported to have had the prohibited performance-enhancing substance meldonium in his positive test and could face a potential ban of up to four years under FA rules. Mudryk, who has denied intentional wrongdoing, is not with the Chelsea squad for the tournament in the United States and Maresca said he has had no contact with the player since the Uefa Conference League final win over Real Betis in Poland late in May. 'The last time I spoke with Mischa was in Poland and he was quite good,' he said. 'Since that day I have not spoken with him so I don't know how he is now but for sure in the next days, in the next weeks, we are going to have contact with him.' Mudryk was signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 for €100 million but his time at Chelsea has been dogged by inconsistency. He has scored just 10 goals in 73 appearances in all competitions for the Blues. Maresca revealed that he is hoping to sign a new wide attacker before the start of the Premier League season. 'We had already one entire season almost without Mischa, last season, and we tried to find different solutions with some of the academy players, like Tyrique (George), but we are going to decide to go for a winger,' the Italian said. 'It is quite clear that it is a position we need to improve.' Meanwhile at the Club World Cup, Chelsea can expect to face challenging conditions with heat and humidity rising in Philadelphia in recent days and the match starting at 2pm local time – after press time in Singapore. The game is likely to be key in deciding who tops Group D with both teams fresh from winning their opening match at the tournament – Chelsea got the better of Los Angeles FC in Atlanta while Flamengo defeated Esperance. Maresca added that he has reduced the intensity and duration of training sessions to ensure his players remain competitive for the matches ahead. 'It's not easy because of the temperature,' he said. 'We're going to try to rotate players. We need to rotate three, four, or five players each game. It's impossible for players to be at 100 per cent for 11 months straight.'
