Flamengo beats Mineiro to go top in Brazil's Serie A

Rio De Janeiro, July 28 (UNI) Leo Ortiz scored late as Flamengo returned to the top of Brazil's Serie A with a 1-0 home win over Atletico Mineiro.
Ortiz broke the deadlock in the 75th minute with a powerful header past goalkeeper Everson after Luiz Araujo's delivery from a free kick on Sunday.
The result at the Maracana Stadium leaves Flamengo with 36 points, two clear of second-placed Cruzeiro. Atletico Mineiro is 13th in the 20-team standings with 20 points so far.
"It was difficult to break them down because they are very solid defensively," Ortiz told reporters after the match.
"Today we managed to get the winning goal from a set piece, which shows that we're able to find solutions when games become difficult."
In other fixtures on Sunday, Vasco da Gama drew 1-1 at Internacional, Bahia cruised to a 3-0 home win over Juventude, Sao Paulo prevailed 3-1 at home to Fluminense, and Ceara won 2-1 at Cruzeiro.

AC Milan legend Franco Baresi is recovering well after undergoing surgery to remove a pulmonary nodule, the club confirmed in an official statement on Sunday. The former defender and honorary vice president will now begin oncological recovery therapy, which includes immunotherapy. 'It Will Take Me a Little Time to Get Back to Full Strength" The 65-year-old Baresi issued a message to reassure fans following the operation, expressing optimism despite the health setback. 'Dear fans, I just want to let you know that it will take me a little time to get back to full strength," he said in a statement released by the club. The issue was discovered during a routine medical check, and doctors moved quickly to perform the surgery. His recovery will be closely monitored as he begins further treatment in the coming weeks. A True Icon of AC Milan and Italian Football Franco Baresi is one of the most revered figures in the history of AC Milan and Italian football. He spent his entire 20-year professional playing career at San Siro, making over 700 appearances for the Rossoneri and captaining the side for 15 seasons before retiring in 1997. Known for his elegant defending, tactical intelligence, and leadership, Baresi was the anchor of Milan's defense during a golden era for the club—winning six Serie A titles and three European Cups. On the international stage, he was part of Italy's victorious 1982 World Cup squad and later captained the national team to the final of the 1994 tournament in the United States, where the Azzurri fell to Brazil in a dramatic penalty shootout. Since retiring, Baresi has remained closely tied to the club, currently serving as honorary vice president. His legacy continues to influence generations of Milan fans and players, with his No. 6 jersey retired in his honor. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Ademola Lookman Demands A Move Out Of Atalanta Amid Inter Milan Interest: Report

Last Updated: Ademola Lookman wants to transfer from Atalanta to Inter Milan. Atalanta rejected Inter's €42 million offer, seeking €50 million. Ademola Lookman has formally handed in a transfer request to Atalanta, signaling his intent to force a move to Inter Milan as the summer window heats up. The Nigerian international is eager to join Cristian Chivu's side, with negotiations ongoing between the two Serie A clubs. Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Lookman officially submitted his request to leave over the weekend. His decision follows Inter Milan's latest offer—reported to be €42 million plus €3 million in bonuses—which Atalanta swiftly rejected. The club continues to hold out for a minimum fee of €50 million for the reigning African Player of the Year. — Ademola Lookman (@Alookman_) August 3, 2025 The 27-year-old has expressed his growing frustration with the situation. In a symbolic move, Lookman recently scrubbed all Atalanta-related content from his social media, a clear sign of his desire to part ways. Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi confirmed Lookman's exit intentions earlier this week, explaining that the club had expected to sell him this summer in line with their transfer strategy. 'Lookman has been expressing his desire to leave for some time. It's no secret," Percassi said. 'In all our discussions, he was a player who should have left this summer, following our club's philosophy of one sale per year. But the transfer market always brings unexpected things." Since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2022, Lookman has delivered consistently, scoring 52 goals and providing 25 assists in 118 appearances. He was a central figure in their 2023–24 Europa League triumph, further boosting his profile. Inter Weighing Alternatives While Lookman remains Inter's top target, reports suggest the Nerazzurri are also exploring backup options. Talks have reportedly begun with Chelsea for Christopher Nkunku, who is viewed as a viable alternative if Atalanta refuses to soften their stance. view comments First Published: August 03, 2025, 18:17 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
