OceanGate's former chief pilot says he was 'cut out' from the Titan project after telling CEO Stockton Rush the sub wasn't safe

'Titan: The OceanGate Disaster' examines the 2023 submarine accident that killed five people.
OceanGate's former chief pilot said Stockton Rush crashed into a shipwreck in 2016.
David Lochridge said he was cut from the project for voicing his concerns.
The former chief pilot of OceanGate said the company's CEO ignored his warnings that the Titan submersible — which was destroyed in a deadly implosion — was unsafe.
David Lochridge made the claim in Netflix's new documentary, "Titan: The OceanGate Disaster." It examines what went wrong in the run-up to the Titan's visit to the wreck of the Titanic, which ended in the CEO of OceanGate, Stockton Rush, and four others dying onboard.
Lochridge recalled just how determined Rush was to achieve his goal of making deep-sea tourism a reality.
The documentary features archival footage of Rush and his team building submersibles, including the Titan. In one clip taken from an interview with CBS, Rush says: "By the time we're done testing it, I believe it's pretty much invulnerable."
Lochridge was OceanGate's director of marine operations and the company's chief pilot from 2015 to 2018. He recalled how in 2016, Rush chartered a dive with the Titan's predecessor, the Cyclops 1 submarine, to see the SS Andrea Doria wreck off the coast of Massachusetts. The ship sank in 1956 after colliding with the SS Stockholm due to heavy fog.
Lochridge said he had to persuade Stockton to let him accompany him on the voyage, which included paying passengers, after he decided to pilot it himself.
Footage from inside the Cyclops during the dive, featured in the documentary, shows Rush piloting the submarine into a debris field underneath the bow of the Andrea Doria. The craft gets stuck, and Lochridge takes over the controls to pilot it to safety.
"He had us jammed good and proper. I said to him, 'Please don't do anything. Just give me the controller.' He didn't have a lot of experience in piloting subs," Lochridge said.
"At that point, I got us clear, I motored us 50 meters away, turned us round and I said 'That is what we were supposed to have fucking done on the dive,'" he added.
Lochridge said that after the crew resurfaced, Rush's attitude toward him changed.
"The passengers were hugging, but with Stockton, it was a complete turnaround for me. He never really spoke to me the rest of the trip. The dynamic changed. After the Andrea Doria, I started getting cut out by senior management from the Titan project. I was dropped from all email communications, verbal communications. I was totally out of the loop," he said.
Lochridge said he was fired two years later in 2018 after he discussed his safety concerns with Rush in a meeting about the Andrea Doria incident.
In 2023, OceanGate threatened to sue Lochridge if he didn't withdraw his allegations to the US Department of Labor that he was fired in retaliation for raising these concerns.
In the documentary, Lochridge said that he was worried about the stability of Titan's carbon fiber hull and the caliber of the design team working on the project.
He said: "I was seeing every single piece, and pretty much every single piece had an issue. The engineering director, Tony Nissen, we used to argue on a regular basis. He brought in people with very little experience from the manned submersible industry. A lot of them were fresh out of college."
"At the time, I had no experience with carbon fiber, but for the untrained eye, it was like Swiss cheese. You could actually see the porosity, you could see the delaminations, you could see all the voids," he continued, referring to the separation of layers.
Nissen also appears in the documentary and said he was pressured by Rush to "make sure nobody spoke up."
Footage from 2018 also shows Rush arguing with Lochridge as he believed that the submarine could handle pressure at the extreme depths.
"What you do is you set a testing program where you do it incrementally. It's not just going to go to 3100 [metres] and be perfect, and at 3200 [metres] it all goes anyway. That ain't going to happen, and I will put my life on the line to say that ain't going to happen," he said.
OceanGate ceased operations in July 2023 and could not be reached for comment.
"Titan: The OceanGate Disaster" is streaming on Netflix.

'Sweet Life: Los Angeles' cast talk milestones, life after show's cancellation

'Sweet Life: Los Angeles' cast talk milestones, life after show's cancellation Show Caption Hide Caption 'Black Mirror': Paul Giamatti, Issa Rae headline new Netflix episodes A look at the six new episodes in Season 7 of the Netflix sci-fi anthology series "Black Mirror," featuring Paul Giamatti, Issa Rae and Rashida Jones. Although "Sweet Life: Los Angeles" has ended production, its cast continues to find solace in the show's run, which technically is not over just yet. In 2021, "Sweet Life: Los Angeles," created and executive produced by Issa Rae, premiered, and some credited the show for bringing a breath of fresh air to the reality TV landscape. According to IMDB, the unscripted program gave "an honest and unique look into what it means to be young, Black, and in constant pursuit of one's dreams in the heart of South Los Angeles." Unlike various reality TV shows, the cast consisted of new faces rather than celebrities and influencers. "Sweet Life: Los Angeles" was inspired by BET's "Baldwin Hills" and other nostalgic early 2000s reality shows, Rae told the Hollywood Reporter. "Issa Rae and her production company always do an incredible job of really tapping into like the locality of it all," cast member Amanda Scott told USA TODAY. "I think people really resonated with that because they were seeing us be outside in LA without the glitz and the glam." Fellow castmate Tylynn Burns added, "I think it was rare to see people in their 20s who are who have been friends forever and have genuine connections. On top of that, it was like post-COVID, so I think the show provided some light and encouraged people." "Sweet Life: Los Angeles" was canceled at HBO Max after two seasons in 2022, leaving viewers on a cliffhanger. However, fans will have the opportunity to watch the first season re-air on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) starting June 13, and according to Cheryl Des Vignes, she and other members of the "group chat" will spill "a little tea." Ahead of the OWN premiere, Burns, Des Vignes and Scott spoke to USA TODAY about some milestones they have accomplished since audiences last saw them on the show. More: 'Sweet Life: Los Angeles' re-airing with 'a little tea' from the cast: How to watch Tylynn Burns and Jaylenn Hart Tylynn Burns and Jaylenn Hart are still together. The duo, who have been together for seven years, are living in their new home in the Los Angeles County area with their dogs. "We've been through ups and downs, but we're in a really good place. The best part of our relationship is that we're best friends," Burns told USA TODAY. "I think being complete opposites, we bring out the best and worst versions of ourselves, but since we have that friendship, we just remain a safe space for one another to continue to grow." Burns said they are excited to take their careers and relationship to the next level. An engagement, more international travel and kids are in their future, he added. Hart is currently executing events for a major streaming platform. "We're prepping ourselves for the most fun years of our relationship in our 30s," Burns said. Cheryl Des Vignes and Jerrold Smith II Longtime lovebirds Cheryl Des Vignes and Jerrold Smith II are living in newlywed bliss after getting married in Los Angeles in May. Their wedding had 170 people in attendance, including cast members of the show. "I feel like our wedding was just the perfect representation of two LA kids who grew up in the city," Des Vignes told USA TODAY. "Right after dinner ended, it was just nonstop dancing, taking photos, and having a good time." The newlyweds have been together since high school, and viewers got a glimpse of their journey on the show. "The best part was it just kind of brought both of us closer," she said. "Having somebody in my corner while going through all that was amazing." Des Vignes is a senior designer at a fashion company and a business owner. Smith works as the head of marketing for a China-based shoe company. The couple plans on going to Italy and Greece for their honeymoon in the fall. Amanda Scott and Rob Lee Amanda Scott and Rob Lee, who met during undergrad at Howard University, recently got engaged. According to Scott, it was a "display of love, support and community." "I wish I could relive that day over again," Scott continued. "After that moment, it's like my entire life has opened up in front of me. I'm looking forward to so many things that Rob and I are going to do together as a unit." The two don't have an official wedding date, but they are excited about their next chapter. Since the show, Scott said she is still working in the public relations and events space. Meanwhile, Rob hosts various events in and around Los Angeles. The couple still lives in the Los Angeles area. This shocking loss has caused a massive response from fans and wrestlers alike, with a majority assuming this change was to put a title on Gunther just so he can have one when he faces Goldberg in his upcoming retirement match. Despite this, one WWE Hall of Famer calling for the people booking Uso to be fired altogether. "Here's what I feel," Rikishi said. "I feel that those are writing for this kid. His storyline, you didn't do him justice. You didn't feed this champion right talent to be able to continue to make this champion. Not a fair shot in my eyes. "So you go 51 days. I say, fire. Fire those who are writing for this kid here. If you can't make money for the company, why are you in that position?" All the Kookiest Things to Remember About ‘Wednesday' Before Season 2

In honor of Friday the 13th, here's what you need to remember from season one before Wednesday returns to Netflix in August. Happy Friday the 13th, you Wednesday fandom kooks. The Jenna Ortega-starring Addams Family spin-off series from Tim Burton follows the Addams' eldest as she attends a boarding school filled with other supernaturally inclined youths in a sprawling mystery that has only begun. Wednesday returns to Netflix in less than two months, so we're taking this spooky occasion to pull out our Nevermore notes before school gets back in session. Here's what you need to remember—besides Wednesday having a Friday the 13th birthday, as Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) proudly boasted to Nevermore's headmistress at the start of season one. The Addams Family has powers Right before getting sent off to Nevermore Academy, Wednesday begins to have psychic visions. It's what shows her the swim team picked on Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) at the normie school they attended before she unleashed punishment by piranhas during their practice. As the season progressed, it led her to discover her connection to Goody Addams, her ancestor from Jericho who was outcast during the pilgrim era by the town founder Joseph Crackstone—a proponent of killing all outcasts during the witch hunt era. Morticia killed a man While being the model student of Nevermore during her time at the academy, Morticia saved the school from by killing Garrett Gates, a descendant of Joseph Crackstone who was obsessed with her and wanted to continue his family legacy of exterminating the town outcast society. Gomez (Luiz Guzman) took the fall for his beloved—they've been soulmates since they met at Nevermore—while the town covered up Gates' attempt on the school. This bit of history comes up as one of Wednesday's first cases meant to drive a wedge between her and her family, but it ultimately brings them closer when she clears her father's name. Friends or foes Despite her reluctance to make any sort of connection with others, Wednesday makes a fair amount of friends and enemies. Her unlikely friendship with Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), her colorful opposite and werewolf roommate, helps Wednesday identify with others her age as they assist her in solving the Crackstone mystery. Even her early competition, the powerful siren Bianca Barclay (Joy Sunday), eventually comes around to a mutual respect to protect their peers from the attacks their student body suffers at the hands of a mysterious creature in the woods who is connected to it all. The night of the Rave n' Dance, which gets sabotaged by the town bullies, early ally and fellow misfit among the outcasts Eugene (Moosa Mostafa) nearly dies at the hand of the monster. So all the bad blood among the Nevermore student body is put aside to stand together against the looming Jericho monster and Crackstone threats. Bianca's ex, Xavier, encourages Wednesday to join the school's secret society, the Nightshades, who were founded to protect the outcasts. Wednesday declines, due to not wanting to be overshadowed by her mom's legacy as a member. A crush with everything to Hyde Early on in the season, Wednesday meets a boy in town who happens to be sheriff's son. Tyler (Hunter Doohan) helps get her out of trouble with his dad but also harbors a crush on her. As she works to uncover the identity of the monster, she's blinded by her feelings for Tyler. After their first kiss, she sees the truth that he was the monster all along. Turns out, his family secret is that his mother was a Hyde, an outcast type that is so unpredictable and dangerous that Nevermore does not allow them to attend the school. All hands on deck While the show focuses on the strange and unusual youth in the Addams universe, other members of the family join in on the fun. There's a fun cameo from Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen) that reminds you this is still an Addams Family affair. Disembodied hand Thing rooms with Enid and Wednesday to watch over her for Gomez and becomes a pivotal ensemble member. Thing is who nudges Wednesday to come out of her padlocked emotional shell; it also befriends the students wanting to connect with Wednesday on its own. Before Wednesday can uncover the identity of the person controlling Tyler, Thing gets too close and is brutally attacked before seeing the face of Laurel Gates, Garrett's sister, who returns to carry out the Hyde attacks on behalf of the Crackstone legacy. This drives the whole student body to back up Wednesday against the town's narrative that she's the danger that's threatening the school. As things heat up and Joseph Crackstone is summoned alongside the Hyde for a final showdown, Enid finally wolfs out to square up against Hyde Tyler for her found family members. Wednesday vs. Wednesday Christina Ricci, the '90s era Wednesday Addams from the iconic Addams Family movies, is revealed to be Laurel Gates, who posed as a teacher at Nevermore Academy. She murders the school principal and kidnaps Wednesday to use her blood to resurrect Joseph Crackstone so they can unleash revenge on the outcasts once and for all. Laurel leaves Wednesday to bleed out, but Goody Addams is also summoned by the supernatural events and uses Wednesday as a conduit to fight back, while healing her in the process. As Crackstone tries to set Nevermore ablaze, Wednesday distracts him while Bianca helps deliver the deadly blow and destroy him. Laurel rushes Wednesday and they get into it, which is such a cool and satisfying meta moment. The baton is suitably passed as Ortega's Wednesday delivers a foot-stomping blow to Laurel. While we don't know if Laurel survived a Doc Marten to the head, Tyler is carted away in custody. The season leaves Wednesday beginning to get messages from regions beyond of an incoming mystery that set the stage for season two. Wednesday season two part one drops August 6, followed by part two September 3, on Netflix.
