Footy star Lewis Brown relives the shattering moment he found out his dad had taken his own life - then learned his grandfather and great grandfather had died the same way
Former NRL star Lewis Brown has opened up about the heartbreaking discovery of his father's suicide - and the later gut-wrenching news that his grandfather and great grandfather had died the same way.
The 38-year-old, who played 198 NRL games and 15 Tests for New Zealand, has spoken about a phone call he received in 2016 to inform him that his dad had passed away.
'I was unfortunate enough to get a phone call, hopped off the field, by my older sister, my only sibling, and it was a phone call that changed my life ... what I valued, and also what life was,' Brown told News Corp.
'That phone call was that he'd taken his own life. I remember being at Liverpool in the hotel bar with Shaun Johnson and his partner, just being very confused about what it meant.
'I'd never really come across the topic of suicide, obviously I'd heard of it but at that time it wasn't talked about either.'
Brown, who didn't see much of his father growing up, flew home to Christchurch to be with his mum.
While at the funeral, the footballer learned some other shocking news.
'That week, sort of leading up to the funeral was a bit of an odd one,' he said.
'I got to the funeral and walked in and I have a half brother who I hadn't seen since I was four.
'Then as the day went on, I found out my dad, my grandfather and great-grandfather had all taken their own lives.
'And the only thing that we share in common was the same middle name and that's Earl.'
'And the only thing that we share in common was the same middle name and that's Earl.'
Brown went on to explain that he never really acknowledged his father while growing up and would call him by his first name instead of 'dad'.
'We'd lost connection for nearly 10 years and during that day, the funeral, people would come up to me and say, "Your dad was so proud of you",' he said.
Brown (pictured playing for Manly) said he ran from his middle name 'for 31 years' until he turned a corner and used it as a positive in his life
'Say, "He was always at the pub watching you on a Saturday, Sunday". The thing is he didn't want to be a burden on me; like most males, he didn't want to be a burden.
'Just because he'd seen me on TV, he thought I'd gone off and was living my dream. He just didn't want to be a burden or reach out and no one told me he was dealing with depression.
'I never even knew the history of my grandfather either ... I was just off living my dream and never had any contact from that side.'
Shortly after Brown retired in 2019, he decided to start a luxury clothing line called 'Earls Collection'.
In six years, Brown's business has thrived and his clothing has been worn by NFL, NBA and NRL stars.
'One day I was up in Paddington ... I remember driving up Oxford Street and I stopped on the side of the road and I was like, "I'm going to call it Earls Collection", he said.
'I've run away from this name for so long, this is the reason why I retired, this is a new chapter in my life.
'I ran from the name for 31 years, let's just give it a go.'

Jockey, 50, who got knocked out in fight HE started hit with massive ban after admitting ‘anger management' issues
A LEGENDARY jockey who got knocked out in a fight HE started has been hit with a massive ban. Multiple Group 1-winning rider Noel Callow was rushed to hospital with injuries following an explosive weighing room bust-up with rival rider Kyle Wilson-Taylor. 2 2 Callow, 50, bumped into Wilson-Taylor, 25, at the scales and chased him back into the jockeys' quarters. An investigation ruled Callow made 'aggressive contact' with Wilson-Taylor from behind before the pair fell to the ground. Wilson-Taylor was then said to have mounted Callow and delivered two blows to the head at Doomben racecourse in Australia. Callow, who was concussed in the scrap, was quickly taken to hospital and immediately stood down from racing. Bosses have now given him a huge three-month ban, which will be reduced to two once he completes an anger management course. Callow, who has won more than £22million in his career, admitted in a written note to stewards he had issues with his temper. He also has to provide evidence he has been to see a sports psychologist before being allowed to race again. In a brilliant blow-by-blow account of how the fight went down, the stewards' report read: "Following the running of race six at Doomben on Wednesday 28 May 2025, both Mr Wilson-Taylor and Mr Callow presented to steward Simon Fletcher to weigh in for their respective rides in race six. "Mr Wilson-Taylor proceeded to the scales to weigh in with Mr Callow positioned behind him awaiting his turn to weigh in. "Mr Callow then positioned himself in close proximity to Mr Wilson-Taylor that then resulted in Mr Wilson-Taylor making contact with Mr Callow in order to exit the scales. "Mr Wilson-Taylor has then made the comment 'I'm not scared of you' to Mr Callow. "Mr Callow then proceeded to weigh in as Mr Wilson-Taylor then proceeded into the male jockeys' room. "Upon completing being weighed in, Mr Callow has then proceeded to run into the male jockeys' room in pursuit of Mr Wilson-Taylor. "Mr Callow has then made aggressive contact to Mr Wilson-Taylor from behind resulting in a physical altercation ensuing between Mr Callow and Mr Wilson-Taylor resulting in both Mr Callow and Mr Wilson-Taylor falling to the ground. "Shortly after falling onto the ground Mr Wilson-Taylor has then struck Mr Callow twice to the head whilst positioned on top of Mr Callow before other riders, along with steward Mr Fletcher, have then been able to separate Mr Callow and Mr Wilson-Taylor. "As quickly as the exchange escalated, it de-escalated and was finished. It might have taken 15 or 20 seconds. "This was not an incident thought out and planned beforehand. It was a momentary loss of temper, and any penalty should reflect that. "There was initiation of the altercation by Callow but that must be weighed against his subsequent restraint, his co-operation during the inquiry, early guilty plea, and steps taken toward rehabilitation. "The conduct was out of character with Callow's conduct over recent times and is unlikely to be repeated. "He has shown insight by taking steps in seeking assistance with anger management. "He has apologised in writing by his letter dated 31 May 2025." Commercial content notice: Taking one of the offers featured in this article may result in a payment to The Sun. MAFS star reveals she's turned to fat jabs in desperate bid to lose weight after being bodyshamed on show and by trolls
A MARRIED At First Sight star has revealed she's been subject to "shame" after opting to use fat jabs to lose weight. The E4 favourite, who featured in the Australian version of the matchmaking series, told of her "frustration" at more traditional methods which failed to have an impact on her wellbeing. 6 6 6 The auburn-haired star, 37, found fame on Married At First Sight 's most recent series, where fans were quick to call out her groom Tim Gromie's cruel conduct. MAFS fans watched in horror as school teacher Tim brutally rejected Katie Johnston just minutes after they said I Do - as he insisted she was nothing like what he "would have wanted". Having pulled a producer to the side, he exclaimed: "What the f***?" He continued: "Totally not what I wanted. "It's not good. I normally go just short, blonde. petite. "Katie is like nothing that I would normally go for." After the body-shaming on screen, restaurant CEO Katie told how she was using "scientific help" for her weight loss - because "that's what it's there for." In a piece to camera filmed outside, she told fans: "I have initially started my GLP1 journey with quite a bit of shame wrapped around it. "Because I was frustrated that I couldn't do it myself and I just didn't have the capacity to figure it out on my own. MAFS' Katie breaks down in tears in upsetiting scenes with Tim "And I utilised scientific help and that's what it's there for. "So it's anything, any meds that you use to help you control parts of yourself like for example anti anxieties, I've used anti anxieties for really bad times in my life that I couldn't cope." GLP1 is a natural hormone that helps regulate blood sugar and appetite. It also plays a role in slowing down digestion, and is often a treatment used to help Type 2 Diabetes. The star, whose show groom rudely confessed he wanted to "run away" during the experiment ultimately ended up quitting the series. Mafs couples that have stood the test of time Loved-up Tayah Victoria and Adam Aveling of series six fame had the first Mafs baby. The pair couldn't keep their hands off each other on the programme and quickly found their feet in the outside world, moving into Adam's Doncaster home. Just 18 months after meeting, the couple welcomed their daughter Beau. Season five couple Michelle Walder and Owen Jenkins also managed to make their marriage work away from the cameras and had their first child in December. Teacher Michelle, 29, has no regrets about taking part in the experiment. She told us: 'I just feel very lucky and thankful that it has worked out - and excited for everything to come.' Michelle and Owen were both sick of dating apps when they applied in 2019. Owen recalled: 'I had been out for some drinks with a friend after work. "While he was out for a cigarette I was scrolling on Instagram waiting for him to come back in. 'The MAFS advert was the last thing I saw, and I joked, 'Wouldn't it be funny if I signed up?' 'A few beers later when I was back at home I sent in the application, and the rest is history.' Another couple to make Mafs UK history is Zoe Clifton and Jenna Robinson. Despite a slight rocky start, where they clashed over Jenna's vegan lifestyle, the show's first same sex pairing are still going strong. They even have a successful podcast together called Life With a Pod. Jenna shed light on being involved in the show earlier this year when she told us: "We're not legally married, and I never felt like we were. I definitely feel the process makes you take the relationship a lot more seriously and having the help of the experts… if you can survive that process it sets a firm foundation for a long-lasting relationship." Yet Queensland native Katie has gained a legion of loyal fans since appearing on-air, who appreciate her cheery character and bubbly, positive personality. Though showing how the backlash towards fat jabs had hit a nerve, she said in her long clip: "OK I'm going to go on a little bit of a rant because I'm frustrated and that's what I do when I'm frustrated. "I'm over people being shamed for using GLP1 or any other method of weight loss. "Anything that people do is their choice and it's up to them and only you know your path and what got you into the position you are and the help that you need. "Only you know that. Sorry about my b****y state "But just be kind to yourself. She rounded off with the words: "So please don't let the narrative out there that it's so easy to lose weight and just eat well, just exercise well. "Just be more motivated, have more discipline - go away! Leave us alone. We're figuring it out. "We are giving ourselves breathing space to be able to implement new habits and learn new things and transition our life to a healthier life. "So help us on our journey and cheer us on instead of giving us a hard time, thank you." She captioned the video: "Dear THAT person, go away, we are all on our own path, you do you, " and one fan replied: "You are so right Katie and I love you either way and you will always be my fave girl x" A second put: "Love this message," as a third posted: "Screw them loves you are amazing and you are rocking it." One then added: "You just keep being You XOXO." Another surmised: "Just keep being you and good luck in your next wellbeing journey everyone needs little help now and again be kind to yourself and ignore the negativity of people xx" SHOW STORY Since her show stint which aired in the UK earlier this year, it emerged her groom Tim had been messaging another bride during their honeymoon. During the scenes, fans were convinced the tattooed star who had an extreme reluctance to talk about his own marriage was a producer "plant." Tim told their co-stars at the Dinner Party he felt he was making the most effort in their relationship, having struggled to find a connection with her - despite scenes showing the exact opposite playing out on screen. It left Katie's fellow bride Jamie furious as she defended Katie and branded Tim a 'gaslighter'. 6 6 6
