HSBC upgrades Nike shares after earnings beat, says inflection is 'finally here'

CNBC4 hours ago

Nike is poised to see even more gains following its better-than-expected results for the fiscal fourth quarter, HSBC said on Friday. The firm upgraded the sneaker giant to buy from hold, marking its first buy rating on the stock in three and a half years. It also raised its price target on the name by $20 to $80, which implies about 28% upside from Thursday's close. This comes as shares surged more than 9% in the premarket Friday after Nike beat analyst expectations on the top and bottom lines. While the company said that President Donald Trump's tariffs are anticipated to cost it $1 billion prior to price hikes, it also said it expects to see profits and sales declines moderating in the future. "Long in the making but we think the inflection is finally here," analyst Erwan Rambourg wrote in a Friday note to clients. "We think there is more than tangible evidence that Nike has a path to see its sales rebound in the not-too-distant future, and its margins to be repaired, and this despite an unfavorable tariff headwind which the group believes could weigh for 75 [basis points] on gross margin in FY May 2026." Along with seeing better sales momentum and gross margin pressures easing later in the year, the analyst pointed to management "not cutting corners and is committed to quality." On that front, he said that the repositioning of Nike's digital business as one that's full price could be beneficial for the company in the long term. When it comes to the company's growth trajectory, however, he thinks investors should not expect a V-shaped recovery but rather a swoosh similar to the company's logo. "Management was clear on the fact that there is no easy fix and that a combination of clearance, soft China and tariff hit will make Q1 ending August somewhat tricky with sales and margins down," he wrote. "Tariff mitigating factors will also ramp up gradually." With his call, Rambourg joined 18 other analysts with a strong buy or buy rating on Nike, per LSEG. By contrast, 20 analysts out of the 41 total that are covering it have a neutral view of the stock with a hold rating. Other analysts also held an optimistic view of Nike following its latest quarterly results. Goldman Sachs, which also has a buy rating on the stock, said the company is "approaching trough earnings," adding that it's "early in its transformation journey." Additionally, Bernstein, which has an outperform rating on the retailer, similarly said it expects a "gradual recovery." This year, the stock has fallen more than 17%, underperforming the S & P 500's more than 4% in the period.

Nike stock jumps on earnings, price target boosts

Shares of Nike (NKE) are rising sharply. The company's Q4 results topped estimates, but it was enough for several analysts to turn more optimistic on the stock, with several raising their price targets on Nike shares. Yahoo Finance Anchor Julie Hyman reports the latest on the latest moves. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Morning Brief here. Nike shares are jumping here pre-market. You got some bullish calls out here on the street from Jeffries. We just buy it this morning. Yeah, a number, just buy it. That's cute. Yeah, we don't have our sneaker cam ready unfortunately here this morning, but I am not wearing Nike spoiler. Um, I also like Simeon Siegel's comment, less bad is good enough. This was not a spectacular quarter by any measure. Sales still fell by 12%, but a lot of the different numbers, including that top line revenue number beat estimates. And so indeed, for the street, that's good enough, especially considering that the stock is down 17% this year. And Elliot Hill, the CEO, of course, talking about his turnaround plan starting to take hold and make some progress. He says, "From here, we expect our business results to improve. It's time to turn the page." He said that on the conference call here. The other thing that analysts were looking for was progress on the inventory front. As you well know, Brad, there has been a big inventory buildup, um, in various channels for Nike. Uh, it's also been trying to repair its relationships with its retail partners. Um, CFO Matt Friend said that that inventory cleanup is proceeding, um, and that they have a healthy and clean position, um, in terms of where they're going into the second half of the year. I know that analysts like Anisha Sherman over at Bernstein were looking for that commentary, uh, in particular on inventory. Just want to mention the effect of tariffs as well because the company says it's going to increase tariffs, that is will increase costs by about a billion dollars, um, because of their China sourcing. So it's possible that at least part of the upside we're seeing this morning, Brad, is because of those headlines on a China deal because if that is going to be a big stress on Nike, if there's relief on the horizon, that can be good news for investors as well. Yeah, absolutely. And and thinking about what some of the calls are this morning off of the earnings, coming back to this Jeffries note, they're saying that Amaya, which is Europe, Middle East, Africa, leading the global recovery for Nike here, talking about the momentum being strongest there where they made strides and cleaning up the marketplace, repositioning digital. But you think about that region and who's typically been able to grow and and really maintain some of that market share. It's for brands like Adidas. It's been brands like Puma that are are core and call that that region home. So how are we seeing some of the other major retailers move on these Nike results knowing that, okay, if Nike is signaling that the worst may be behind them, what could this mean for us in the mindset of the consumers as well? It looks like good things. Briefly, right? We're seeing that those other shares are also rising this morning. Um, Puma, Adidas of the world, but also we're watching some of the US-based footwear retailers. Actually, I, I, well, that's Adidas, uh, US shares. So, um, if you look at how they're trading in Europe, we have been seeing some gains for some of those stocks. Um, and then if we look through the feed through here in the US, we've seen a little bit of optimism priced into some of the shares too. While we're talking regions, by the way, I do want to mention, if I didn't already, the greater China was the only geographical area that did not beat estimates. So continuing the trend of some US companies that are having a little bit more friction in that market. Sign in to access your portfolio

Stocks reach record highs as Trump trade fears ease on Wall Street

A key stock market index reached a record high Friday, capping off a comeback from the selloff driven by President Trump's tariffs this spring. The S&P 500 index was up 0.5 percent Friday morning, rising roughly 32.6 points and exceeding the all-time high of 6,147 points set in February. The Nasdaq composite was up 0.3 percent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.4 percent. After falling sharply in March and April as Trump rolled out his trade agenda, stocks have rallied back to their previous highs after the president dramatically reduced the scale and scope of his import taxes. Trump shook markets in April by announcing he would impose roughly $600 billion in tariffs on nearly every U.S. trading partners. His new 'Liberation Day' tariffs followed import taxes he levied on Canada, Mexico and China earlier in his term, along with additional taxes on foreign metals, autos and auto parts. Despite initially brushing off the market's reaction, Trump adjusted his trade agenda two weeks later by reducing and delaying his April tariffs on all other countries, but ramping them up to levels as high as 145 percent on China. The U.S. and China have since struck several smaller agreements to reduce tariffs on each other's goods and open up Chinese exports of rare metals to the states. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce confirmed further details of the deal on Friday, which includes 'China will, in accordance with the law, review and approve eligible export applications for controlled items. In turn, the United States will lift a series of restrictive measures it had imposed on China,' a Ministry spokesperson said in a statement, which did not go into detail. Estimates for the current overall U.S. tariff rate range between 10 and 15 percent now, down from 25 percent when China and the U.S. had triple-digit tariffs in place on each other. The Yale Budget Lab puts the overall number at 15.8 percent now. Major new tariffs include a 10-percent general tariff, 30-percent tariffs on China, 25-percent tariffs on autos and auto parts, 25-percent tariffs on steel and aluminum, and 25-percent tariffs on select goods from Canada and Mexico. The Congressional Budget Office estimated earlier in June that the new tariffs would reduce primary deficits by $2.5 trillion. Accounting for macroeconomic effects, the deficit reduction increases to $2.8 trillion. Also potentially boosting optimism on Wall Street was the downward revision to first-quarter gross domestic product that came this week, which could potentially increase the chances of a rate cut from the Federal Reserve. However, a hotter than expected inflation print on Friday likely works against that option. Inflation rose 2.3 percent in May on an annual basis, up from just 2.1 percent in April, the Commerce Department said Friday. Removing the more volatile categories of food and energy, core prices increased 2.7 percent from a year earlier, a rise from 2.6 percent in April. 'Today's report is not good for economic activity and inflation and will continue to keep the Federal Reserve on the sidelines for now,' Raymond James economist Eugenio Aleman said in a commentary.
