Zara Qairina case: Police say false info and photos online threaten investigation and justice

Malay Mail3 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is urging all parties to stop any action of uploading or sharing unverified information related to the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said police have detected the spread of information and a child's pictures linked to the Zara Qairina case by irresponsible parties on social media.
He stated that the shared information is inaccurate and has the potential to confuse the public, besides potentially affecting the ongoing investigation and hindering the process of justice for all involved.
'The entire investigation process for the case, including the post-mortem issue, is being conducted according to existing procedures and legal provisions, and all parties are advised to stop any action of uploading or sharing unverified information, including disclosing information related to the case investigation,' he said in a statement tonight.
Mohd Khalid said the act of disclosing information related to the case can be investigated under Section 15 of the Child Act 2001, which involves a prohibition on revealing the identity, address, school name, and pictures of the child involved, as well as Section 203A of the Penal Code for offenses related to the disclosure of information.
'The individuals involved can also be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of a network facility or network service. Adherence to the law is the basis of national peace and well-being. Any violation will be met with firm action in accordance with existing provisions,' he said.
Zara Qairina, 13, was confirmed to have died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on July 17.
The student was taken to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of a religious school in Papar at 4 am on July 16.
The investigation into the case is currently being finalised by the police after being returned by the Attorney-General's Chambers yesterday. — Bernama

Thousands brave rain to attend solidarity rally for Zara Qairina

PAPAR: Despite the rain, about 5,000 people turned up for the Himpunan Aman Solidariti Zara Qairina here tonight. The rally, held at the Benoni Commercial Centre compound, saw participants holding placards bearing the hashtag #Justice4Zara, and dressed in black as a symbol of mourning. Organising chairman from Komuniti Anak Muda Papar, Azrul Ibrahim, described the gathering as a clear sign that Malaysians are demanding justice in the case involving the Form One student who allegedly fell from the third floor of a religious school dormitory here. "This (peaceful assembly) is not just a show of solidarity, but a manifestation of the public's desire — especially those of us in Papar — to know what truly happened to Zara Qairina. "We are calling for the investigation to be expedited, and if there was any misconduct by anyone, we demand that they be brought to justice. "At the same time, we also urge the people of Papar and beyond to exercise caution when sharing or commenting on any information. "We have seen, through the death of Zara Qairina, that social media has become flooded with false narratives and slander, and if not controlled, this can cause division among the people," he said. Azrul said the case had drawn not only national attention, but also interest from neighbouring countries including Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei. Earlier today, Zara's remains were exhumed from the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Mesapol. A post-mortem is scheduled to be conducted at 9am tomorrow.

A screen grab of the video which features a man hoisting the Malaysian flag upside down. PETALING JAYA : Seberang Perai Utara police have launched an investigation into an incident in which a man had hoisted the Jalur Gemilang upside down. District police chief Anuar Abd Rahman said the authorities were investigating the incident for improper use of emblems and names, insulting behaviour, and improper use of network facilities. 'Police have recorded the statements of the complainant as well as the suspect involved in the incident,' he said in a statement. A video, uploaded at about 12.30pm today, shows a man hoisting the flag, while another was recording it. A report was lodged at the Kepala Batas police station. Anuar reminded the public against sensationalising the matter to avoid disrupting public order. Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported that the hardware shop owner involved in the gaffe said he was measuring the length of an iron pole while hanging the flag and did not notice that the flag was upside down. The owner said he rectified the mistake immediately after realising it. He apologised for the blunder and lodged a report at the Kepala Batas police station to provide an explanation. It was the sixth flag-related incident since January, and the second case of improper handling of flags this month. On Aug 1, SJKC Chung Hua in Port Dickson apologised for mistakenly flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down.
