Penang receptive to enact Data Sharing law
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who he met yesterday together with other state representatives, was very supportive of the proposal which is crucial to develope a comprehensive data ecosystem that includes the state and local authority levels.
'We (federal government) have explained to them that we are able to build an ecosystem where data is accessible not only at the federal level but also at the state and local levels. My team has been proactive in educating state authorities about the importance of data sharing.
'We want to digitalise the government operations as much as possible, and once we are able to do that, everyone will benefit.
'For Penang, the Chief Minister (Chow) is very receptive to it (the proposal),' he told a press conference after officiating Malaysia Digital (MD) Open Day 2025 here, today.
Also present were Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo, as well as State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh.
The Data Sharing Act 2024, which came into effect yesterday, aimed to strengthen data management and data sharing between government agencies and the private sector in an effort to accelerate the country's digital transformation.
Meanwhile, Gobind said the government has taken proactive steps by deploying legal officers to the states to explain the implementation methods of the new legislation promptly.
'Last week, a team from my office, my legal officer, my legal department, came to Penang and made a presentation to Zairil.
'I have told my team to go to all the states as well, so that they can explain how it can be done quickly, and hopefully by the end of the year, we can see efforts to enact legislation to that effect in all states,' he said.

80ha of Silicon Island reclaimed so far
GEORGE TOWN: Reclamation works for Silicon Island have passed the 80-hectare mark, marking steady progress for the largest land reclamation project in Penang to date. The project, which covers a total area of 930.78 hectares, is being developed in two phases, namely 510 hectares under Phase 1 and the remaining 420.9 hectares under Phase 2, with reclamation starting in September 2023. Penang Infrastructure Corporation Sdn Bhd (PIC) chief executive officer Datuk Seri Farizan Darus said the 80-hectare milestone was a positive sign that the project was progressing according to plan, and it was not just about physical progress. "This project is designed to be a driver of Penang's long-term growth by combining world-class infrastructure, sustainable development practices and community-oriented facilities. "It will also open up new opportunities for investment, innovation and employment, while ensuring that the local community benefits from better facilities," he said in a statement today. On the development of the Social Impact Management Plan (SIMP), Farizan said a total of RM11.7 million in ex-gratia payments had been channelled to 791 eligible fishermen, thus strengthening the state government's commitment to the welfare of fishermen. Apart from cash assistance, he said the government had also implemented a boat and engine assistance scheme as part of its ongoing efforts to provide financial guarantees and modern equipment to local fishermen to ensure they can continue their livelihoods more effectively. "To date, 118 out of 295 active fishermen who own boats have received new boats and engines, with a total expenditure of almost RM10 million," he said. Earlier, the Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib and his wife Toh Puan Raja Noor Ashikin Raja Abdullah visited the project site to witness the achievements and crossed to the island using a 378m temporary iron bridge built at Permatang Damar Laut. Also present were state Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee Chairman Zairil Khir Johari, Deputy State Secretary (Development) Mohamed Abdul Rahman and Silicon Island Development Sdn Bhd (SIDSB) chief executive officer Datuk Szeto Wai Loong. During the visit, they were also briefed on upcoming facilities including the 380m marine flyover, Pan Island Link 2A (PIL2A), Matang Food Court and community facilities as well as a new Community Development Department (KEMAS) training centre. Silicon Island, with a land area of 930.78 hectares, is a reclamation project owned by the Penang government, the first time the state government has directly developed a reclamation project to ensure long-term economic growth.

The National Defence Ministry said that the IOT, led by Malaysian Defence Attaché to Cambodia Col Nazlee Abdul Rahim, will visit the areas surrounding the world-famous Preah Vihear Temple. bootstrap slideshow 'They are visiting the province this morning to observe, verify and report on the updates of the situation after the ceasefire,' said the ministry's spokesperson Maly Socheata, during a media briefing. During the Extraordinary Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on August 7, both countries agreed on a 13-point peace agreement, which included the establishment of the IOT.

PropertyGuru Verified Badge – tailored for Malaysia – introduced to curb scams
KUALA LUMPUR: PropertyGuru Malaysia has introduced the PropertyGuru Verified Badge for property agents on its platform, in partnership with the Board of Valuers, Appraisers, Estate Agents and Property Managers (LPPEH), to curb property scams in the local market. PropertyGuru Malaysia country manager Kenneth Soh said the initiative is tailored for Malaysia, where consumer awareness remains lower compared with its other markets. 'This particular push is Malaysia-specific. The badge helps prevent scams by ensuring consumers can easily identify verified professionals with traceable details, giving them recourse if anything goes wrong,' he said at the official launch yesterday. He said Vietnam already has verified agents and listings, while Singapore's smaller market benefits from stronger consumer awareness, making risks more manageable. In contrast, many Malaysians are still unclear on how to verify an agent's licence. Soh said this gap has fuelled rental scams, one of the most common fraud tactics, where conmen pose as agents, show units booked on short-term rental platforms and disappear after collecting deposits. 'Scammers are getting more and more creative. By starting from the discovery stage, we want consumers to look for verified agents on PropertyGuru. We have their identify card, licence tag and phone number, so if anything happens, there is recourse. Without verification, consumers are often left with no way to trace the scammer,' he added. Soh said over 100 had already been verified on the day of its soft launch (Monday), and numbers are expected to rise quickly. PropertyGuru currently has close to 10,000 agents in Malaysia. 'Our target is to get as close to 100% as possible within the year, depending on submissions from our agent partners and the verification process through eKYC and licence checks,' he said. Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department head SAC Mohd Razali Mohd Idrus said property-related scams have become increasingly sophisticated, often involving impersonation of licensed agents to deceive unsuspecting buyers and tenants. 'Public awareness and preventive measures are critical. PDRM welcomes collaborative initiatives such as PropertyGuru's Verified Badge, which can help Malaysians make safer property decisions and reduce opportunities for market exploitation,' he said. The PropertyGuru Verified Badge is awarded to registered real estate negotiators, real estate agents and probationary estate agents with active licences via LPPEH which completes PropertyGuru's secure verification process. This process involves confirming agents' identity through eKYC, validating their professional licence details, verifying their registered contact information and acknowledging the Verified Badge terms. Once completed, the PropertyGuru Verified Badge will appear on the agent or negotiator's profile, listings, and search results, making it easier for property seekers to engage with legitimate professionals. According to the LPPEH, unlicensed individuals defrauded more than 1,500 victims, resulting in nearly RM60 million in losses between 2019 and 2023.
