Maaman box office verdict: Soori's Tamil family drama earns 60% more than Vidhuthalai 2, trade analyst reveals if it's a hit

Time of India03-07-2025
Maaman box office verdict: Maaman, starring Soori, hit the screens on May 16 and opened to a good response at the box office. It also received decent reviews with critics lauding the performances and the theme. However, some felt that the treatment could have been better. The family drama has now completed its run in theatres and the verdict is out.
Maaman becomes a hit
Soori has been constantly experimenting with his reel image. The actor, who essayed comic roles in the initial phase of his career, has added a new dimension to his Kollywood innings with Maamam. According to Ramesh Bala, a trade analyst, the family drama has emerged as a hit.
'Maamam has grossed Rs 40 crore in Tamil Nadu. The film is a hit,' he told Indiatimes.
The film has outperformed Viduthalai 2, Soori's last major release. The action drama grossed Rs 25 crore in Tamil Nadu and ended up being a disappointment. It received mixed reviews, which prevented it from reaching the standards set by the first part.
Maamam beat DD Next Level at the box office
Maamam was released alongside DD Next Level. Many in the industry expected the Santhanam-led flick to dominate Maamam. This, however, did not happen. Maamam held its own against DD Next Level and stunted its prospects. The horror comedy earned nearly 19 crore in Tamil Nadu during its full run. According to Ramesh Bala, Maamam benefited from the family elements.
'The title is an emotional one. It means mother's brother. For most families, especially the women, the brother sentiment is very strong. Women here love there brothers just like there are specific festivals like Bhai Dooj in the North,' he said.
Soori has been experimenting with his image of late. The actor, who was once typecast in comedy roles, surprised many with his portrayal of a policeman in Viduthalai. He also left fans asking for more with his work in Garudan (2024). The same year, he was seen with Vijay Sethupathi in Viduthalai 2. The fact that Soori has now established himself as a 'serious' performer too worked in Maamam's favour.
What's Maaman about?
Maaman centres on the events that take place when Inba, the protagonist, faces problems in his marriage because of his sister's son. His strong bond with his nephew, who can't stand his wife, adds a new layer to his worries. Maaaman features Soori and Aishwarya Lekshmi in the lead.

Devil hunter Denji is in love with two women in Chainsaw Man The Movie: Reze Arc, watch trailer

One of the best-selling mangasof all time is getting the film treatment, as Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc is coming to a theatre near you soon. Based on the original story and characters written by Tatsuki Fujimoto, this time Denji will have to choose between two women who he loves while trying to keep up with his already chaotic life. The film will release on September 26, and going by the trailer and the reactions it got, this film is going to be welcomed with open arms. Denji becomes a Devil Hunter after making a deal with Pochita, who is the chainsaw devil. The deal saves Denji's life, and he gets the ability to turn any part of his body into a chainsaw. In the first arc of the series, Denji decides to join the Public Safety Division, which is led by one of the women he is in love with, Makima. The protagonist continues to have strong feelings for her even though she technically betrays him. As he starts striking some kind of balance between his normal life and his life as a hunter, a new character is introduced, Reze. The name of the film and the trailer do suggest that Denji's affection for Reze is going to be central to the story, and it will be interesting to see whether this time his feelings will be reciprocated or not. ALSO READ: This Hollywood child star with Rs 157 crore net worth became a millionaire at 11, quit acting at 14; still makes millions for his hits 33 years later Laced with violence and dark humour, the series quickly shot to fame in 2018. The anime adaptation of the series was done by Mappa Studios, known for other animes like Attack On Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen. Both those adaptations received immense love, especially the former, which Mappa picked up for the last season. The studio is also behind the film, and the director of the anime, Tatsuya Yoshihara, is helming the project. Fans expressed their excitement online but took the trailer with a grain of salt due to some reported cuts. Many fans argued that certain scenes have been removed from the original trailer and said that they hope the CBFC does not suggest cuts in the actual film. A fan commented under the trailer, 'The censor board might actually censor this movie like Superman from the looks of it,' while another wrote, 'Why is this censored? Hope they don't do it to the actual film.' While it's still unclear why the studio or Sony decided to change the trailer, if cuts have been suggested at this stage, it's likely that they will end up staying in the actual film. Past anime films released in India, such as Demon Slayer: Mugen Train and Jujutsu Kaisen Zero, did well given the limited shows they had, which highlights a growth in anime viewers in the country, hence another big market opening for all creators.

'People Won't Forgive': Mukesh Khanna On Ramayana Budget, Ranbir Kapoor As Ram

Curated By : Satyaki Baidya Translation Desk Last Updated: August 12, 2025, 17:39 IST Mukesh Khanna said that the Ramayana cannot be made with a budget of Rs 1,000 crores; it requires substance. (News18 Hindi) Mukesh Khanna, best known for his iconic role as Bhishma Pitamah in Mahabharata , recently weighed in on Ranbir Kapoor's upcoming film Ramayana , directed by Nitesh Tiwari. While praising Ranbir's potential to portray Ram, Khanna also noted that the actor may face challenges due to controversies surrounding his previous hit, Animal . In an interview with Galatta India, Khanna stated, 'You are depicting Ram climbing a tree and shooting arrows. That is something Krishna or Arjuna might do, but not Ram. If Ram were depicted as a warrior, he would not have sought the help of monkeys; he would have fought Ravana single-handedly. If Ram is described as a warrior, people will not accept it." If Ram Is Called a Warrior, People May Reject It Expressing doubt over Ranbir Kapoor's ability to play the role of Maryada Purushottam Ram, Khanna said, 'Ranbir is a good actor, but he carries the image of an animal from his previous roles. I have no objection to him playing Ram, but if you portray Ram as a warrior, the audience will not accept it. Ram humbly accepted his 14-year exile, ate Shabri's berries, and did not engage in bow and arrow combat." Mukesh Khanna Voices Objection Mukesh Khanna said he had recorded a two-minute video to explain his objection to the portrayal of Ram in Ramayana: The Introduction , intending to share it on social media. However, his team incorrectly informed him that the scenes he had seen were not real but AI-generated videos created by YouTubers. Reaction To Casting Ranbir As Ram Regarding Ranbir Kapoor being cast as Ram, Khanna was approached by a publication to comment on Kapoor's past admission of eating beef. The veteran actor responded, 'I will not comment on this. He may have eaten beef, but he might have given it up. Let it go." Ramayana Can't Be Made On A Rs 1000 Crore Budget Khanna further commented on the film's production, stating, 'There can be no bigger subject than the Ramayana. But I have seen how 'Adipurush' was poorly executed. If the same attitude is applied, today's Hindus will not forgive you. The Ramayana cannot be made with a budget of 1,000 crores; it requires substance. Just like ' Shaktimaan ' is not made with stars but with content, even with a new actor." Ramayana Doesn't Need Big Stars Concluding his remarks, Khanna said, 'If you rely on a star to ensure the success of ' Shaktimaan ', it indicates a lack of faith in the character. Therefore, big actors are not necessary for the Ramayana." Besides Ranbir Kapoor, the film ' Ramayana ' will feature stars like Sunny Deol, Sai Pallavi, and Yash in significant roles. view comments News movies 'People Won't Forgive': Mukesh Khanna On Ramayana Budget, Ranbir Kapoor As Ram Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
