'No formal talks yet with US on F-35 buy': Government in Lok Sabha

Time of India3 days ago
NEW DELHI: India has not had any formal talks with the US over the purchase of fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets, the external affairs ministry informed the Lok Sabha Friday.
Responding to a written query, MoS (MEA) Kirti Vardhan Singh said the India-US joint statement following the meeting between PM Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in Feb 2025 had mentioned that US will undertake a review of its policy on selling fifth-generation fighters (such as the F-35) and undersea systems to India.
"No formal discussions have been held as yet on this issue," added the minister.
A news agency reported on Thursday that India had told the US that it is not interested in purchasing the F-35 jets. The minister was also asked whether the govt has reviewed the dynamics relating to US military assistance proposals and India's autonomy in terms of foreign policy, given its strategic implications, especially in a conflict scenario involving third-party mediation.
The minister responded by saying that the India-US partnership has benefited from growing strategic convergence & cooperation and that India closely evaluates all its external partnerships, including those in the defence and strategic domains, through the prism of its national interest and commitment to strategic autonomy.
"India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership is anchored in mutual trust, shared interests, goodwill and robust engagement between our citizens," he said.

As regards third-party mediation, the minister said that it has been India's longstanding position that any outstanding issue with Pakistan will be discussed only at a bilateral level. "This has been made clear to all nations, including by the PM to the US president," he said.

PM Modi's Pariksha Pe Charcha enters Guinness World Record for most registrations in a month

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Pariksha Pe Charcha initiative has entered the Guinness World Record for "most people registered on a citizen engagement platform in one month", the Ministry of Education (MoE) announced on Monday (August 4, 2025). According to officials, 3.53 crore valid registrations were received during the eighth edition of the programme. Prime Minister Modi directly interacts with students, teachers, and parents as part of the Pariksha Pe Charcha (PPC) initiative, which aims to transform the examination season "into a festival of positivity, preparation, and purposeful learning", making exams a time for encouragement rather than stress. "Pariksha Pe Charcha has been redefined as a national approach to examinations by turning stress into a festival of learning. The eighth edition of PPC recorded a total of over 21 crore viewership across all media platforms in 2025," Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said at an event where the Guinness World Record certificate was formally presented. "The overwhelming participation in PPC 2025 is seen as a reflection of the country's collective commitment to holistic and inclusive education and alignment with the vision of a Viksit Bharat," he said. While addressing the occasion, Ashwini Vaishnaw called Pariksha Pe Charcha a unique initiative that brings together students, parents, and teachers to promote well-being and stress-free learning. PPC is an annual event in which Mr. Modi interacts with students appearing for board examinations. During the event, he also answers students' queries related to exam stress and other issues. The first edition of the prime minister's interactive programme with school and college students was held at the Talkatora Stadium in February 2018. Its seventh edition was held in a town hall format at the Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan, engaging participants from across the country and overseas. The eighth edition of the prime minister's annual PPC was held in a different format, with renowned personalities like actor Deepika Padukone, six-time world champion boxer MC Mary Kom and spiritual leader Sadhguru joining the event.

Centre hikes allocation to Andhra Pradesh under PM-SHRI scheme

The allocation to Andhra Pradesh under the PM-Schools for Rising India (PM-SHRI) scheme has seen a notable increase in the financial years 2024–25 and 2025–26 compared to 2023–24, according to a release from the State Education Department. The department cited information received by TDP MPs G.M. Harish Balayogi and Putta Mahesh Kumar, who had raised questions in the Lok Sabha on August 4 regarding the district-wise details of PM-SHRI schools established in Andhra Pradesh and the funds allocated over the past three years. In response, Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary stated that Andhra Pradesh had been sanctioned an outlay of ₹354.85 crore in 2023–24, including a Central share of ₹212.91 crore. The sanctioned outlay rose significantly to ₹782.39 crore in 2024–25, with the Centre contributing ₹469.43 crore. For the current financial year, 2025–26, the outlay stands at ₹555.76 crore, of which ₹333.46 crore is the Central share, as per official information published on the Lok Sabha website. So far, a total of 935 schools in Andhra Pradesh have been selected under the PM-SHRI scheme. The MPs had also sought specific information regarding Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema and Eluru districts. The Centre informed that 37 schools have been selected in Eluru district and 28 in Konaseema. The State Education Department stated that the expansion of the scheme aims to transform existing schools into model institutions equipped with modern infrastructure, smart classrooms, and a focus on outcome-oriented learning.
